“Don’t teach around the lesson, teach the lesson.” Good to know Dr. Jones. I would also say adapt the lesson to your audience. I teach children under 12 so I break it down to their level. Then I ask them true or false questions to see if they retained what they learned. They do! Thank you Sir.

Wow. Just wow. NO ONE else volunteered, rather the teacher backed out at the last minute. So, I was bumped from helper to teacher last week. I had a man in the classroom with me, but he was not my official helper - he was there to be the "2nd adult" in the room, only.
So, last week, I spent hours and days preparing myself and for the children's lesson, yesterday. Preparation did include prayer, but I'm going to need a whole lot more!
At our church, a weekly Sunday School does not exist for any age. There is one Sunday of every month set aside, starting yesterday, where the following takes place:
Men's meeting,
Women's meeting, and
Children's Bible study - combined, ages Pre-K to 12th. [No other teachers, or no willing people I should say.]
Keep in mind, the church was built (a long time ago) as a church, in a church building shape, and we even have a steeple. There seems to be only one actual classroom in the whole building. The rest of the rooms are an office space with office supplies and equipment storage, a sanctuary, a loft area, a fellowship hall, and a kitchen.
Again, no weekly Sunday School classes, and no school building in town with classrooms to borrow from.
My problems with these are:
I and my one helper are more like glorified babsitters, during this once a month "Bible" study, for 60 minutes. I'm not sure there will be themes for continued instruction from the previous month's Bible study.
There's no curriculum for me to follow, but I do better with just a Bible and findings (pics, crafts, songs, object lessons, etc.) on the internet, anyway. My guess is, if the chaos that happened yesterday continues, the children won't remember the lesson from (yesterday) month to month even with handouts to take home!
These children all come from what most will define as being "good home" environment. However, they're as unchurched, ill-mannered, and in many aspects grossly more disrespectful than some of the children who come from what is defined as a "bad home" environment.
They are related to the every Sunday worship attendees. [We average 10 to 12 people each week, all over 50 yrs of age.] So, these are children, whose parents bring them once a month, I have been told, to placate and visit the relatives who attend.
These individuals who attended yesterday are the same parents and children who are usually too busy with life any other time. I get it, I have relatives who are the "go to church to appease ______", too.
These children, though, appear to have no interest in a Bible lesson no matter how well prepared. I tried a variety of ways to make the lesson fun and interesting. However, it seems that asking children to sit for longer than 1 or 2 minutes at a time is like I'm asking them to sit on a chair with hot coals as cushions.
An 8 year old girl in the class, yesterday, asked me what color she should color Jesus' hair and clothes. I told her to color it any color she wanted since God made the colors and He'd like any color she chose. The girl's tween year old brother (scholarly-type, smart) informed me, "Man, you know nothing! People create colors and make stuff not some god."
Still another tween interrupted the further by coming back at him with, "it doesn't matter anyways cuz they're [myself and helper] here to babysit us while the parents talk." Yet another child, who was 6, told the class, "Jesus is a ghost, we can't see Him cuz ghosts ain't real! I'm gonna make His hair pink."
Then, they started throwing questions and statements out left and right:
who's God then if He ain't real,
what's sin,
if we can't see Jesus why talk 'bout 'im,
why should we.... if...
I wish I could whistle as loud as my dad, maybe this could have put an abrupt end to the chaos.
I'm not saying I had no answers for them, of course I did, do. What I'm saying is that these children were like a disorderly mob at a street rally. They didn't want the questions answered. They wanted to be heard, be smarter, prove my incompetence [an older girl], be angry, win an argument, and know more than anyone else.
These children were not inclined to stop talking when asked or told to do so, so that I could even answer their questions one at a time. Nothing, nada.
The children got more boisterous as class time passed. Talking over me, and over each another. No one was listening. I had a really good lesson, and object lesson. I tried to encourage learning a simple song, God is so Good. No way José.
I had worked each lesson part into 5 minute or less segments to keep it "easier" on kids who can't sit still for long. I planned balancing the rest of the time accordingly for play, snack, arts and crafts, cleanup, and a game. Nope, they weren't having any of it.
All while this was going on, yesterday, one other child spent the time running around like a defiant monkey pulling stuff out of cupboards, banging toys around, and running in and out of the classroom to other parts of the building.
When I addressed my concerns with the parents and grandparent types afterwards, I got:
"Oh well!"
"It's no different than any other day."
"He doesn't listen at home either."
"Oh well!" REALLY !? If parents refuse to instruct (expect) their children in basic character decency while they're at home... then 1-2 hours per week of this kind of guidance (in church), and my puny 60 minutes once a month is definitely not going to do it!
Children need their parent's faith, character, guidance, discipline, admonishment, instruction in self-control and self-discipline. The children also need a more complete teaching about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, salvation, prayer, faith, etc. every day at home. Parents need to step up and, while they're at home, command a modicum of respect, behavior, and listening decorum.
Our public schools are actively teaching children that their bad behaviors, words and actions are normal and okay. The parents, because it isn't as stressful and it's less time consuming are nodding their heads in agreement to it all. The teachers in our public school systems are teaching children there is no God. All day long for hours. I get them once a month, for 60 minutes, and I'm supposed to make a difference.
Parents nowadays wonder why there is a shortage of teachers! Pray for parents and public school teachers, for Sunday School teachers; and pray for me, too, please.
