I live in germany and I always assumed that the highways in the US would work the same ay as they do here. Considering the German Autbahn hat major influence on modern US highways, this is very surprising to see. Also considering the US systematicly prioritized Highways over Railway networks makes this even more stupid.

The biggest mistake here was developing cities at extremely low density with single family homes making the provision of rail or even bus public transportation to be utterly unfeasible at worst, economically impractical at best.

I have generalized anxiety and super-wide highways are one of my worst triggers. But strangely enough I hardly ever have issues with the 4 lane (2 lanes in each direction) highways like shown at 5:56. I also find the presence of endless miles of trees to be comforting as well rather than a super wide open desolate sea of asphalt.

Brussels Ring (bypass) : coming from Halle, first obstacle is the "Bocht van Vorst", an almost 90 degree bend (because the Ring was not finished as intended) then further on First lane becomes an exit lane. Further on there is an entry from the left (Erasmus). Then you get to the infamous interchange of Groot-Bijgaarden and its bottleneck : 3 lanes first become 2 lanes, then 1 lane. That 1 lane becomes the third lane of the Ring. And that's just a few km of that bypass.

how can the country that invented the car as a mass produced way of transportation for the masses suck so bad at designing roads ??? insane!
As a european I agree with almost everything, except the 2 lanes on each side, this should only be the case in very rural areas with little traffic, if it gets a slighlty bit more dense 3 lanes on each side are a godsend, the slow trucks can stay right, the 'normal people' can use the middle lane to overtake the slow traffic and the speed freaks can use the left lane to overtake the ' normal' people.
If you have only 2 lanes, there is too much difference in speed and things can get ugly.
and I am talking about autobahn kind of speed (although it works well there too) but on roads with a speed limit , where slow medium and fast would mean 55, 70 and 80 mph

Many (if not all) of the early interstates were built to cut across cities in order to displace economically poor neighbourhoods, which primarily were lived in by ethnic minorities like Afro-Americans and Hispanics. White voters complained of their homes' proximity to "colored hoods" driving down property values, and it was one of the reasons the interstate system was popular with white voters.
Long story short, the design and locations of your highways have a lot to do with racism.

2 Things. I agree that if you design highways like you said in this video, they will work better, but as an example in Australia, I think there are cases when you don't have to design highways as you suggested.
Yes the left lane should be used for overtaking, but once the number of cars on the road increases to a certain threshold, it becomes more dangerous to operate this way because one lane will be traveling slow while the other lane travels quickly. In fact it's more dangerous for each lane to be moving at different speeds as lane changing is the most common cause of accidents on highways (which is why you aren't supposed to change lanes in tunnels here in Australia). I know in America the speed limits are treated as suggestions, but Australia actually has a very good culture of people following the speed limit, meaning the whole keep right unless overtaking thing is a bit mute, because everyone travels at the same speed anyway (except big hills and stuff, but in those cases the rules are enforced properly). I would suggest that the German autobahns have a good safety record because without the speed limits, drivers are forced by the conditions to pay attention and drive properly. It's complacency that causes accidents. The other reason accidents happen are mainly due to congestion, the easy way to fix this is to have adaptive speed limits that lower when the cars on the road increase. This stops traffic from speeding up and slowing down constantly and gets traffic to move at a consistent and lower speed.
In terms of exits and entrances from the wrong side of the roadway, the US highway administration identified this years ago as a potentially bad idea, but most of those wrong side ramps were built years ago and it's a really expensive process to fix them. Interestingly, they don't necessarily make things any more dangerous, because they can actually reduce complacency and make drivers uncomfortable (which can increase safety). The other thing to realise is that even with merges on the "correct" side, drivers in the fast lane still have to get into the right lane in order to exit, or travel over once they enter, you might think that's safer than the alternative, but often what you'll find is that the majority of cars on the road consider themselves "fast lane" users and it's actually likely to make things worse. Also at interchanges if the majority of traffic is making a left or right onto another highway, they will all want to be using the right lane/s to exit and it really puts a spanner in the works of the whole right lane exit things. The reason why they add lanes extra to the right side of the highway and not the left is because often when an entrance comes in to a congested highway, if the entrance is congested too, then all the cars will be trying to merge into just the one lane which clogs up that lane and makes for a very dangerous situation, so they just have the entrance lane become the new right lane. (it's not ideal but there is no real alternative besides having the entrance lane come into both sides of the highway).

    • @Freshbott2
      @Freshbott2 7 місяців тому +1

I’d counter the notion that introducing complexity necessarily improves safety. You’re correct in the case of tree lined streets or cobblestone etc. but that’s all in countering forgiving design, and it’s to cause drivers to slow down. But on the freeway the design is still forgiving, the lanes are wide and the view is open with no obstacle, and the speeds are high. The separation should be complex + opportunity to think or simple + high speed. They should never mix.

American highways are always built in response to an issue, rather than preparing for an issue. Entrances and exits are built in wonkey spots not because the engineers are stupid, but because they are constrained to limited amounts of space. Reality isn't cities skylines, you can't just plop down an extremely efficient and beautiful road network without any repercussions. There are land owners, zoning conflicts, budget, and much more. Regular roads through city centers simply cannot accommodate day to day traffic. If there wasn't freeways going through downtown areas it would be grid lock 24/7, much MUCH worse. No widespread public transit was ever devised early on, and frankly there will never be. So we are stuck with what we have for now and there isn't any point in complaining. We can only hope new urban centers are developed for foot traffic and public transport. There is no fixing what we have without deleting half of the cars in the country.

40 minutes? You wouldn't even be able to commute at all, thanks to all the horrible drivers having accidents on the road! For example: 6:50 to 7:10 that drive on the freeway in Atlanta downtown literally made me seasick while the German Autobahn drive that followed calmed down my stomach.

no you are ignorant, and didn't get the message of the video.. the video promotes better freeway design, which also means that your commute would not use the freeway where it shouldn't be used, (but instead other well designed roads should be build for your situation that are not interstates)
note, I don't know your situation, maybe it's so that a highway is the best route for you, but the point is, for many situations within a city it should not be the best route.

I will never ever understand when people say freeways and highways split cities. WALK UNDER THEM
