I completely agree with this review. Although this film was a disappointing let-down, there were still some truly amazing moments in it. Here are my 2 lists of what I thought were both Good & Bad : The Good: 1. Bruce Willis (though through his performance, you knew he was disappointed with the film already) still managed to do his best with the material, & he was still amazing & kicked ass, although I DO agree he was too assholey throughout his performance as also that it upset me he never even went on a physical one-on-one brawl with anybody.. except he punched a few guys in the face, he was kicked & knocked in the head and torso, & he shot Russian soldiers down, so I guess that accounts for his badassary.. Plus, it could have benefited from a few more smirky McClane remarks, but that's just me. "Hey Jack, I'm not done talking to ya!" 2. Jai Courtney was fairly good in the film, although once I first heard his character talk, I was already annoyed with Mr. Daddy Issues.. "You shouldn't be here.. You shouldn't be here, John!".. "What did happen to dad anyway, John?!".. "Just shut the hell up, John. You're not allowed to talk!".. "You shoot like a G-I Joe. You never got me a G-I Joe when I was a kid!".. Alright, he did not say that last one, but you get my drift. Sure enough, I slowly started to really like/appreciate his character during the scene about mid-way (after the shootout in the building with the tap-dancing carrot-munching Russian dude.. ugh, really?) during his talk with John & how he's basically given up trying to finish the mission & has no idea what to do. I loved that scene for two reasons: 1. It showed how much John had truly loved his son, not matter what they had just been through, & for Jack to suddenly trust & appreciate his dad more in a respectful manner, & 2. It's just plain funny to see John McClane throwing sarcasm towards his own son about just going home, lying on the couch, & having a glass of milk.. lol, classic McClane right there although he was being way off with being bad mannered to Jack! Throughout the rest of the film, Jack McClane was a pretty cool character, & seeing him be sarcastic, yet respectful towards John at the end was refreshing to me. 3. Mary Elizabeth Winsted.. in one word.. uhh, sexy.. ok that's two words. Although short, her return appearance was not the least bit unwelcoming, & brought a huge smile to my face :) 4. The Tap-Dancing, Carrot-Munching Russian Bad Guy.. OK, I know what you are going to say.. "What the heck?" "WHY would you say that is even remotely a good thing about the movie?" "That part was stupid".. Now let me clarify: his character (although necessarily integral to the plot) was pointless.. but, I loved every scene he was in just because of how insane & hilariously campy he was. Sure he is DEFINATELY NO Thomas Gabrial OR Simon/Hans Gruber OR EVEN Colonel Stuart (from 'Die Harder'), but under the circumstances, he's fun to watch & you can tell he's having fun with the role (though he is not intimidating in the least like the other villains of the series were). 5. Irina, the Russian bad girl.. uhh, so hot! If anything, SHE was an intimidating villain (even though she never got to do much except being super hot, just saying). I did love the part at the end where she attempted to avenge her father's death & tried to kill John & Jack by ramming the helicopter into the building, ultimately committing suicide in the process. Now that was unexpected, but very cool, in my opinion. 6. Sebastian Koch as Yuri Komarov : the REAL guy pulling the strings.. Though a bad villain and a very confusing character, I liked his performance in the film.. But what the hell was with that "Woooahrr!" moment after killing the TDCMR (acronym for guy @ #4) bad guy?.. scratches head 7. The Score by Marco Beltrami.. INCREDIBLE & POWERFUL !! 8. The Cinematography & Camerawork.. GORGEOUS & WELL DONE ! 9. The Story.. Now let me make this one clear: I loved the whole deal with John going to Moscow, Russia to obtain his son, Jack, from prison (though what he was planning to do from there is anyone's guess). I also loved the plot of the villains using Chernobyl as a way to spread nuclear disaster on the world. I also love all the conspiracies (though they made the villains motives too confusing at times) .. 10. The Action Set Pieces/Over-the-top Stunt work.. Some of the most incredible stunt work & well done action scenes I have ever seen put to film, honestly (This is all opinion based, by the way) .. The car chase was truly amazing (Even though the occasional eye-rolling, unrealistic, dumb moments occurred), & the climax of the film was phenomenal (again, even though those occasional moments happened) .. & yes, there were times where I got confused about what was going on during some of the action, but I personally can let that slide. A lot of the action & stunt work IS plausible, even though over-the-top. 11. Sound Design/Film Editing.. FRANTICALLY BOMBASTIC & SUPERB ! 12. The "R" rating.. Though most of the shootings contained little blood, there was a numerous amount of brutal/relentless action throughout containing the occasional bullet shot impacts w/ bloodspirts, a total of 3 bloody/gory headshots, and I counted around 23 F' bombs (including the famous catchphrase @ the end).. Also, the car chase & bombing scenes were strong.. In addition to those points, John, @ the very end of the film, after crashing through a plate glass window & into a large pool, is seen battered, bloodied, & limping on the ground next to the pool, trying to get up, while his shirt is shredded & riddled with blood. 13. In terms of John & Jack' scenes (& Lucy's cameo), there were some impressive writing/dialog .. The banter back and forth between both John & Jack was hilarious. Also, the interactions with the villains were funny & badass. Most impressively, during the quieter/dramatic scenes of the film (mostly @ the beginning & end scenes), there were some great lines of dialog with the characters.
Spot on review, John. If I hadn't seen this with a buddy, I might have walked out of the theater, and I never walk out on films! Bruce Willis literally looked bored to tears in this. He's seriously turning into a Nicolas Cage "paycheck" actor.
I love Die Hard to pieces. I grew up with the first two, saw the third in an actual cinema and watched the shit out of it on VHS. The fourth is actually pretty damn good, but THIS??? THIS???? These people don't know what they're doing. I actually do want a sixth one but they need to get someone who knows what makes Die Hard great. And wasn't responsible for Max Payne.
I have to agree, but it also had to do with the writing of his Character. His character was poorly written for, it was like the writers tamed his character or never heard of John McClane. The plot and setting was horrible and made no sense. Die Hard 4 was much better then this one. If there going to make another Die Hard and I hope they don't, but if they do the writers better do a better job with John McClane. Like you said I remember getting really annoyed because he continued to say I am on vacation a lot. Maybe that made Bruce Willis not very interested in the Character because you see a different performance from 4 to 5. Overall I gave it a D.
yeah i know a lot of people were saying i thins die hard film series part 5 a good day to die hard, they said that they only saw Bruce Willis being plain old ordinary Bruce Willis, and not John McClain like they saw black in the late 80's and early mid and late 90s instead peace out love that review man! =D
One of your best reviews yet, very articulate/informative and sprinkled with your trademark flickster humor.....okay i was trying to sound smart but i think i just came off as a dumbass lol
First three seconds when you were introducing this latest Die Hard movie, I can tell you didn't like it by your eyes, it's filled with disappointment and your face was scowling with disgust. Chris hated it. Jeremy hated it. And last but not least, you hated it. 3 badass movie reviewers says no? So then, I'm not gonna go.
I totally agree with this. Bruce Willis almost parodies McClane rather than plays him it's like someone doing an impression of Bruce Willis, if that makes sense. And a lot of the action scenes felt like a road runner cartoon. McClane gushed blood from far less serious set pieces in the first three. I did expect the ending to make up for it a lot though, I wanted Bruce to have a fight with the generic muscular Russian henchman. Get his ass handed to him before doing something dirty to win.
I actually thought the action scenes, particularly the chase scene, was really well done. It felt like the action was really happening and it wasn't just a bunch of special effects. I liked how the camera would pan out and zoom into the action. I'm with you in that it didn't exactly feel like a Die Hard movie. It's like they just wrote this action movie and they decided to add John McClaine to the mix. The look of the film wasn't pretty either. Lot of grey, It is Chernobyl after all I guess.
We have to adapt to the fact this is a modern action movie. In the 80s and 90s when we were kids it was hip to be a killer.Today you are a villan if you kill all your enemies.
Many reviewers couldn’t put the plot into a sentence but I can this movie is about John and Jack protecting Yuri and to prevent the shift of power of Russia to the wrong people if they don’t succeed the world will face a 2nd Cold War.
this movie was great! it had the best car chase since "Ronin", wonderful set pieces in Moscow and a lot of explosions. sure, it could have been better, but it's an improvement over 4. by no means a standard action movie.
Sin city, red, moonrise kingdom were good too. And I didn't think live free or die hard was too bad. If it would have been rated R like the first 3 it woulda been dang good IMO
DH3 was my favourite, Jeremy Irons couldn't have done a better job as the bad guy, and Samuel L. Jackson worked really well as the guy that just got roped into a big mess. He's so in over his head and panicky that any line he says is just hilarious. The back and forth with the St. Ives riddle kills me every time. "The guy and his wives aren't going anywhere." - - "What are they doing?" - - "Sitting in the fucking road! Waiting on the moor! How the hell should I know?"
Even tho i liked this movie, i thought the same thing while watching it. I want it to be a smaller situation like Die Hard which is my favorite Die Hard movie.
I really did enjoy this movie and John McClane played by Bruce Willis he did a great job as the main character in this movie and he was awesome for this role and he was badass as this character too and it was nice to see him back for one last time though and Jack McClane played by Jai Courtney he did a good job as the main side character in this movie and he was awesome for this role and he was badass as this character too and it was nice to see him all grown up now too and Lucy Gennaro McClane played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead she did alright job but she was barley in this film though but she still did a great job when she was on screen though and it was nice to see her character back for one last time tho and Collins played by Cole Hauser he did a good job but he was barley in this movie though and he is so wasted in this film too but it was nice to see him in this film though and Irina Komarov played by my girl Yuliya Snigir she did a great job as the side character villain in this movie and she was awesome for this role and she is badass as this character too and she sure is so incredibly sexy as hell bruh and she is so goddamn gorgeous too and I’m a huge fan of her now loved her to death man and finally Komarov played by Sebastian Koch he did a great job as the main villain in this movie and he was so awesome for this role and he was badass as this character too and he was a very interesting villain in this movie too but that’s just me though and can’t believe it’s been 11 years now since this movie came out and last year it was the 10th Anniversary when this movie was released in theaters back then and that’s insane it’s been that many decades ago now and I was 18 years old when I saw this movie back then and I was a senior in high school at the time and I graduated from high school that year and it brings me back so many memories of my childhood days too and I sure do missed those good old classic days back then and time sure does flies in the movie world that’s for damn sure John bro and overall I’m gonna give A Good Day To Die Hard (2013) a 7.5/10 stars I really did enjoyed this movie for what it was but could of been little bit better if it had some sexual nudity for a change and have the movie be little bit longer too and didn’t not like the ending that much either but that’s just me tho in my opinions and thoughts on this movie John the Flick Pick bro
I wonder what the title of the next Die Hard is gonna be: I - Die Hard, II - Die Harder, III - Die Hard With A Vengeance, IV - Live Free Or Die Hard, V - A Good Day To Die Hard, VI - Die!
so?he still said his catchphrase in full sound.it wasn't censored or halved when willis said it in 4.it is also possible to make an R movie out of PG13.have you seen the wolverine, hunger games, and street fighter legend of chun li?in my opinion, what makes a die hard movie good is that the protagonist is actually mcclane (which he isnt in 5).I found your reply illogical.
and you didn't even mention the Chernobyl bit where the radiation somehow disappears from the room, then John & his son show up (without putting on ANY Hazmat gear outside while gearing up!!), & walk into the compount, into the Radioactive room, & oh, nothing seems to be bothering them. Maybe in DH6 they'll be Glowsticks...
I think the main problem with this movie is that it wasn't Die Hard, it was really just practically a generic action move, and at that a really mediocre one, that just happened to have the words Die Hard in it, throw in the fact that you have no idea what is going on and who the bad guy is and that basically sums it up.
Its a 12A in the U.K, the reason I'm not watching this movie, Die Hard should be rated either 15 or 18, we want bad language, action, blood, more action
This shud've really been proper ultra violent, and very gritty. The villains shud hav been ruthless, notorious and make it where they capture his son and John basically goes after him. Maybe even where they actually kill his son cus the guy playing him was bland anyway, all the time ur just thinking who the fuck is this guy with John McClane?? If they killed his son, it wud hav pushed McClane over the edge and we wud've seen a much need other side of this really cool, already tough character.
i have never seen die hard 1-3 so i only seen 4th movie, i really like the movie but i did find it weird that he survied all the shit that happens to him
Yep Live free of Die Hard was a great modern version, the best to me ( I'm a sucker for nostalgia) is Die Hard, but I still like the second one to ( I think it was the one with Samuel L.) but this new one was crap so crap I mean crap is like better than this, Bruce Willis literally sabotaged his son's mission and was the reason things got worse, sure his son may have gotten messed up but I dunno maybe its because he seemed a bit annoying in this movie in the beginning part.
It boggles the mind how the script for this film was greenlit by the studio. Russia is fast becoming a huge market for films so I guess they figured an action film set there would make them a ton of money even if the film is shit.
"Bruce Willis will do anything for money" might just be the greatest opening quote for ANY video review of any movie EVER. Bravo.
I'm a huge Die Hard fan, I think that's why I didn't like it. I would love to see Mcclane stuck in a smaller situation like the first movie.

Bruce Willis literally looked bored to tears in this. He's seriously turning into a Nicolas Cage "paycheck" actor.
My favorite scene in this movie was when they drove from Moscow to Chernobyl in about two hours.
Unbreakable and Looper are the only two dedicated Willis performances of the century.
I love Die Hard to pieces. I grew up with the first two, saw the third in an actual cinema and watched the shit out of it on VHS. The fourth is actually pretty damn good, but THIS??? THIS???? I hated the new one, I kind of even forgot that there was a fifth, that's how bad it was!!
I saw this last night, then went home and watched Die Hard 2 to try and get it out of my mind.
5. A Good Day to Die Hard - D
4. Live Free or Die Hard - C+

Towards the end of this movie, I fell asleep. Admittedly I was tired as hell, but I should not be falling asleep during a Die Hard.

Yeah but the budget was only 30 million so that pretty much rules out the money thing.
i agree with you
such a waste of time and money
4 was amazing
but 5 no way
i need a refund
bruce i need my money back
Hey Flick that was the same problem I had with the movie, he didn't fight anyone
One of your best reviews yet, very articulate/informative and sprinkled with your trademark flickster humor.....okay i was trying to sound smart but i think i just came off as a dumbass lol

D-, I think that’s too high of a rating
Best review to this movie I have seen yet. Everything...and I mean everything you said was right on the dot about this "Die Hard" movie.
The fact that this movie was opening up in mid-February, should've given us all a CLUE!!! FYI: Jai Courtney was great in Spartacus: Blood & Sand.
So then, I'm not gonna go.
lol forgive my ignorance but what was the movie you showed with Bruce Willis on the stretcher
What movie were the clips from? Looks funny
It was ok my fav is part 3 too
I believe the clips at the start of the video are from Hudson Hawk if anyone wanted to know
What was the movie where bruce willis is riding in the back of the ambulance?
I totally agree with this. Bruce Willis almost parodies McClane rather than plays him it's like someone doing an impression of Bruce Willis, if that makes sense. And a lot of the action scenes felt like a road runner cartoon. McClane gushed blood from far less serious set pieces in the first three. I did expect the ending to make up for it a lot though, I wanted Bruce to have a fight with the generic muscular Russian henchman. Get his ass handed to him before doing something dirty to win.

Please give me the link to the Bullet to the Head review, since a few people on here claim it has beeb reviewed by Flickpick
this movie was great! it had the best car chase since "Ronin", wonderful set pieces in Moscow and a lot of explosions. sure, it could have been better, but it's an improvement over 4. by no means a standard action movie.
Whats that Willis moviecalled in the beginning of the video? With the ambulance.
the scene you show us from die hard was that in die hard 5 or diehard 3?
THANK YOU! Some people on here said he did, and I knew that wasn't the case.
What movie did the scene come from? The one from 1:10-1:20?
I heard die hard with a vengeance was the best one? And was that 2 or 3?
I bought it for 60 cents on a library. Worth it? (blu ray edition)
It doesn't worth a single cent 😬
Off topic here but would you be able to do like a top 10 blu ray movie easter eggs I think that would be good.
Sin city, red, moonrise kingdom were good too. And I didn't think live free or die hard was too bad. If it would have been rated R like the first 3 it woulda been dang good IMO
whats the movie that he shows with bruce willis in the ambulance?
Hey, John. When will the next Q & A be up?
I understand why people dont like it, but i actually enjoyed it. Nowhere near as good as the first 4 but i liked it.
Could you review the first films in die hard, John?
I love the first one, 2 and 3 were still really good and 4 was ok. A fun action movie and nothing else.
* Correction Die Hard 3 is my second favorite one I have not seen the sequel but will watch it now and see if its good
Are you going to review Bullet to the Head?
DH3 was my favourite, Jeremy Irons couldn't have done a better job as the bad guy, and Samuel L. Jackson worked really well as the guy that just got roped into a big mess. He's so in over his head and panicky that any line he says is just hilarious. The back and forth with the St. Ives riddle kills me every time. "The guy and his wives aren't going anywhere." - - "What are they doing?" - - "Sitting in the fucking road! Waiting on the moor! How the hell should I know?"
The L and the I on your computer are so close together that it looks like something else
1. - 10/10
2. 6/10
3. 8/10
4. 9/10
5. 3.5/10
-was gonna subscribe, but he aparently hatin on Die Hard 4
Live Free is cinematic gold in comparison to Good Day.
did i mention the bad guys had a Hind helicopter? how cool is that?
Even tho i liked this movie, i thought the same thing while watching it. I want it to be a smaller situation like Die Hard which is my favorite Die Hard movie.
I actually like RED. It was fun, but for me John Malcovich was the best. Bruce Willis looks like he is actually trying in the latest RED 2 trailer.
Yup Unbreakable is a very underrated movie, and an even better super hero origin story than Batman Begins. There I said it.
In the UK it's a 12A (PG-13).
I'm not expecting much.
I wonder what the title of the next Die Hard is gonna be: I - Die Hard, II - Die Harder, III - Die Hard With A Vengeance, IV - Live Free Or Die Hard, V - A Good Day To Die Hard, VI - Die!
whats the movie at 1:08 ?
What about Looper?
so?he still said his catchphrase in full sound.it wasn't censored or halved when willis said it in 4.it is also possible to make an R movie out of PG13.have you seen the wolverine, hunger games, and street fighter legend of chun li?in my opinion, what makes a die hard movie good is that the protagonist is actually mcclane (which he isnt in 5).I found your reply illogical.
For me die hard 1.2.3 are best and 3 being my personal favourite
and you didn't even mention the Chernobyl bit where the radiation somehow disappears from the room, then John & his son show up (without putting on ANY Hazmat gear outside while gearing up!!), & walk into the compount, into the Radioactive room, & oh, nothing seems to be bothering them.
Maybe in DH6 they'll be Glowsticks...
Die Hard should never have had sequels. All of the Die Hard sequels were dissapointing.
It got rated a 12A here in the uk. They cut out all the swearing.
I think the main problem with this movie is that it wasn't Die Hard, it was really just practically a generic action move, and at that a really mediocre one, that just happened to have the words Die Hard in it, throw in the fact that you have no idea what is going on and who the bad guy is and that basically sums it up.
Was that Hudson Hawk?
What job do you have?
1 and 3 are classics IMO (1 being on the o greatest of all time) 2,4,5 ehh I only own 1 and 3
please do top 10 comedy movies or top 10 90s movies i would prefer to watch those mate cheers
What about Looper? That movie was awesome.
What about Looper John? He wasnt just Bruce Willis in that.
Its a 12A in the U.K, the reason I'm not watching this movie, Die Hard should be rated either 15 or 18, we want bad language, action, blood, more action
Die Hard - 4 out of 5
Die Hard 2: Die Harder - 3.5 out of 5
Die Hard with A Vengeance - 4 out of 5
Live Free Or Die Hard - 2.5 out of 5
Hey Bruce is good in Looper!
In England it's a 12A, basically pg13.
Did you say Facks? haha All good. This movie was crap and great review John.
I thought his performance in Moonrise Kingdom and Looper were really good
This shud've really been proper ultra violent, and very gritty.
Thanks for the review, pity about the film.
3rd is my favourite too!
he's good in this too, its everyone else that sucks from the actors to the writing, to the director, and oh my god is the editing terrible
I liked it for the action scenes. I can agree that Bruce talking to himself was wierd as hell
He is good in Looper to:)
John tells it as it is :-)
im gonna see the movie anyways im a big fan of bruce willis
No he didn't. He reviewed The Last Stand. Show me a link where he reviewed Bullet to the Head.
I liked him in Looper
Am i the only one that liked this movie? I am a huge die hard fan.
what about looper i thought bruce willis was good in that movie but idk i might just be small minded
i have never seen die hard 1-3 so i only seen 4th movie, i really like the movie but i did find it weird that he survied all the shit that happens to him
Yep Live free of Die Hard was a great modern version, the best to me ( I'm a sucker for nostalgia) is Die Hard, but I still like the second one to ( I think it was the one with Samuel L.) but this new one was crap so crap I mean crap is like better than this, Bruce Willis literally sabotaged his son's mission and was the reason things got worse, sure his son may have gotten messed up but I dunno maybe its because he seemed a bit annoying in this movie in the beginning part.
It boggles the mind how the script for this film was greenlit by the studio. Russia is fast becoming a huge market for films so I guess they figured an action film set there would make them a ton of money even if the film is shit.
looper? moonrise kingdom? best movies of bruce willis in 2012...
Bruce Willis has done a few good movies in the last few years, namely Looper. But yeah, he does take a lot of crappy scripts as well
Looper?
the movie is hudson hawk
