Very strange that at 2:12, the map clearly shows Fulham Rd as the main road to head north through Alphington rather than Grange Rd as is the case today.
What an interesting story. A story I've never heard about, and if it did go through, where would my parents have moved to,from Clifton Hill as their family home in reservoir would have been a terminus.
My childhood home was off Albert Street Preston. A railway between Alphington and Preston seems rather small and limited use in the modern context. But it was very different a long time ago when alternative options were rarer.
Well, that's a new/old thing I can mention when I'm hosting walks (free) on a social group I host on. (We did the Inner Circle Rail Trail last week, but walked the alignment, not the path) Surprised hadn't heard of this one, since am in Darebin; tho aren't in Alphington much. Tho it does (maybe) explain a bit unusual shaped housing estate (for the time, decades ago) adjacent to Darebin Sports Centre and Sports Grounds, off Darebin Rd, Thornbury. There's a few truncated streets next to that housing estate, so it looks that was done for the estate, but after seeing this, got to check it out again (map wise & actual wise), as now think the truncating might have been done for the railway line/railway reservation. Also, why didn't anyone lol tell me you were doing a talk at Northcote Library; I should check if my Darebin Libraries card is still active, &/or update my email, as they'd have an old one.
Ironic that Alphington was where Tommy Bent's proposed outer circle line was to cross the Yarra (the old Chandler Highway bridge was the old railway bridge).
Imagine a world where the state government purchased large tracts of land to build affordable houses and critical cross suburb connecting infrastructure that are both desperately needed... Hold up....
The train nerd side of UA-cam is incredible internet
2:30 Random Adelaide appearance?
Always a great watch, Philip, UA-cam us a wasteland at the moment and your videos give me a glimpse of sanity
Awesome stuff! Love this rail history of Melbourne!

Great video! Would be a great asset nowadays even if much people dont use it.

Wow. I've never even heard of this proposal before!

Great video, also went to your speech at Northcote.
Been there, done that (with you)
Ok, I wasn’t expecting this to be local to me, I currently live less than 100m from where the last station was going to be. Neat!

If they had built this line, my grandparents' house wouldn't exist!

there was a 1948 parliamentary committee on this railway I have it somewhere in my collection cheers
If this had been built it would've ended up like the Alamein line, through service in peaks but a shuttle at all other times.
1:51 - how many times has the duplication Bunyip-Longwarry been proposed, started, and left unfinished?
I only found an article about someone selling their baby in the pub looking at old newspapers
