They have just restored the canal at the end of our back garden after a hole appeared in the tow path. What we never appreciated before was the brilliance in the making of this feature in the past; the dedication of those who work for the canal trusts; and the appreciation (ourselves included) of the people from miles around of this truly British achievement. How wonderful it will be when the aqueduct is returned to its true glory
I can't be the only one pleased to see the side of good old narrowboat Tilly towards the end. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be 😅
Haha fantastic! Life on that tiny boat really was amazing. The more time that passes, the better I realise life was!
Why was a pipe not run along the aqueduct towpath to move water to the canal on south side.
Its all very interesting Dan. I can see why youre drawn to this place. Heavy engineering meets amazing countryside. Fantastic stuff.
Yes that’s a perfect description! An iron giant amongst the valley!
The flimsy path was used by shire horses to pull the barge along the canal so it's stronger than it looks.
I would ride my bike across to get to work at Argoed hall when it was an old people home, it was a bit unnerving when windy or snow covered but the view on a frosty autumn morning when the leaves are changing colours is breathtaking.
It's still one of the few places in the world where you can see three ages of transport by bridge, canal, rail and road.
Yes, there is so much of interest in the area, and as you say even just in direct line of the sight from the aqueduct!
Hi Dan the pump house side of the Dee is pumping water to keep the flow to feed the water works further down the canal at the set o lock's water feeds the larger holdings lake it's for drinking water 💦
Yes the main purpose of the Llangollen canal is just as a feeder to the Hurlston reservoir that stores drinking water for that area of Cheshire near Nantwich.
Also useful as a leisure canal 🙂
It was featured on last week's Countryfile too. 👍
Fantastic!
thank you Dan, been across that many times, fantastic area
It really is! An amazing place for so many reasons!
🇨🇦 Really Appreciate Your Vlogs 👏 WOW 🙌 Thank You For Sharing 🤩 Spectacular Countryside 🥰 Amazing, Magical Feat Of Engineering 🌟
Yes it is an incredible structure and still going strong! Thanks for watching!
Not my boat license…love it
Been over there 2 times now on a canal trip….our favourite canal….👍👌🇮🇲
Fantastic! I was lucky to grow up not far from these places so it was almost certain I’d end up with a boat at some point!
Ey up Dan glad to see ya alive and kicking💪👍😁
Hi Mate, I know this place well, I'm only 10 miles away out side of Wrexham on them hills, I have seen in the past when the Aquaduct use to be drained by pulling the plug and drain in to the River Dee below
That’s great Dan very interesting.. got to go and take a look 👀 oddly enough we looked what like was the canal water being let out from along by the Chirk aqueduct at New year
Hello! Thanks! Was that the water that is sometimes running out of the pipe into the river below?
3 yrs ago I was looking down into the water and my sunglasses fell of my head into the water, wondering if when they find them will I be able to collect them from their lost property office 😂😂😂
Haha! Yes I imagine there are a few interesting things hidden at the bottom of a lot of these canal stretches!
Maybe you'll find your old I-phone, Dan! Or was it a go-pro you dropped in there a long time ago? I forget.
Haha sadly… there are quite a few of my gadgets that have been swallow by the canal beast over the years! 😂
Crossed this in early sixties in an open dinghy . Freeboard on one side about four inches with no railing and footpath side impassable due to large areas missing ! 😊
Wow! Good times! I often wish I could have been born a bit earlier so I could have seen the canals coming back to life… sadly there is a feeling of a bit of a reverse in fortunes at the moment!
@@SortOfInteresting we went from the Macclesfield canal to Llangollen in two dinghies with out board motor in early sixties , fighting weeds all the way. Neglect was everywhere but met a working boat with the wife working the butty, probably one of the last true working live aboard couples on the Trent and Mersey. In my lifetime have seen the almost death of the cut to its Resurrection by enthusiasts like you . Keep up the good work breathing life into our heritage ( and that of the mainly Irish navies )
Six of us 18yr olds boated across in 1969. Being "18", at the beginning one guy was on the non-towpath side, hanging on to the boat roof rail, feet on the trough's edge (2-3inches?). The drop to the Dee develops very quickly, so we felt he was safer staying put all the way across. DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMENDED!
I've abseiled off that a few times. Way back in the mid 1990's.
Now we just need a quick update on the broken field gate. Has it been fixed yet? 😂
Haha I will keep the investigation active!
The normal overflows of the canal eventually end up in the river Dee and other natural waterways anyway.
I love your videos mate keep the great video's coming.
Thanks, will do!
What happens to the fish and wildlife during this process?
Hello, I believe they drain it about half way on the first day which makes it easier to rescue the fish and put them into the full section of canal. This is only a relatively short stretch of a few hundred feet and because it is so narrow it is a simpler task than in other areas.
Crossed it a few times on foot and twice in a narrowboat. Wife refused to walk back so I had to walk back across to the car and drive round to pick her up from the pub.
It is definitely not for everyone! Especially when it is busy around here!
Nice one Dan what they doing to it 🙂🇬🇧✌️
Just general maintenance and I assume checking for anything alarming beneath the waterline!
when is the Aquaduct expected to reopen. I'd love to walk across it, but being in the West Midlands got a 3hr drive & don't want a wated journey. Thanks
That retaining wall looks pretty wobbly and worn. Do you think they might add a taller barrier on the open side?
I don’t think they will add a taller side until somebody forces them to on safety grounds… but as for the warping, it does make you wonder what would be considered “too wobbly!”
Part of the thrill of crossing is wondering if the boat will jump the low freeboard !!
l never knew there was water under the tow path and l've walked across it many times over the last 40 years
Yes! It’s a simple thing that you almost feel like it should be obvious it’s ver water and yet almost nobody knows!
@@SortOfInterestingThe towpath overhang is so there is somewhere for the bow wave of crossing boats to dissipate. Otherwise there would be a mini "tidal wave" each time a boat went across.
Interesting vid. Thanks.
I think you're missing a trick with the invites from the canal and river trust as you could well get to see stuff that us civilians can't. As a journalist of a sort which us UA-camrs are, you still get to keep your editorial independence.
Worth a thought?
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the video! I will see what comes up in the future, ideally I want this channel to be more broadly "outdoorsy" so who knows what opportunities may come along as spring rolls in!
Why did they not drain it Dan?
Something to do with pollution?
Do they do this in segments ? Not a large length at once or is it just the bridge there draining ?
It is just the aqueduct, but they can put planks in at certain points of the canal to drain small sections at a time.
What's with the big bad gates on the footpath?
They aren’t normally there luckily, it’s just while they are working on it… they removed some railings from the footpath earlier in the year too!
👍
Thanks for watching!
👍🏼👀✨
Thanks for watching!
@@SortOfInteresting always👍🏼👀✨
What I find sort of interesting is that the rivers are no longer being dredged regularly like they used to be..
Then have a flooding problem in many rivers.... Go Figure?
I worry that the rivers are going to go the way of the roads!
I don't understand why they didn't just pull the plug & let gravity do the job, instead of expending all that energy and expense, as well as CO2 emissions if the pumps were diesel or petrol powered.
... not to mention the fact there is loads of water running from the canal into the river within sight of the aqueduct... but I've decided it simply isn't worth the hassle of talking about... as long as I don't end up buying a big boat and having to pay too much for the boat license!
No such thing as ‘bad weather’ just inappropriate clothing.
No-one does magnet fishing there. Why's that then?
I would imagine some people do. But it is also made of cast iron which might make it harder.
@@SortOfInteresting I will really have to try harder not to be so convincing writing on UA-cam.
@@SortOfInteresting Honestly, not a genuine question.
Haha! Well I did wonder, so I gave a gentle answer! 😂
