I don't know what they expected. Probably should have trained people to be circus performers. But maybe they may have ended up with the same results.
This is a tiny little thing, but people need to learn to NEVER mention an actual year if they're trying to show a sci-fi version of the future.
At they least they were going to put it more than half a century ahead.

Okay but the "dark" Sinbad ride is so technologically impressive and kids who are older might think it's cool. If they had just put an age limit on the ride, maybe it could have stayed.
And now that I know there could have been dragons in Disneyland, I am so disappointed there aren't.
That is true, but if Alien Encounter has taught us anything, it's that ride warnings don't work (unless it's medical).

That dragon really is impressive. It's a shame it isn't used for something.
I think they discard it because it was too dangerous if something went wrong.
It needs to be bigger and easily visible… whether that’s lightning or other means, the technology isn’t there yet :-/

It's amazing how many bad Disney ideas from the 80s/90s must have begun with, "So, Michael did another line and then started raving about this thing he saw last week..."
I never saw Light Magic, but this is how it was described to me by someone who did: "The floats stop and they dance, then they jump off the floats and they dance and then they jump back on the floats and they dance some more."
Well I can tell you, I WAS there when it opened and that's a pretty accurate description. The music is actually really good, I bought the soundtrack when it came out and still listen to it. Like the video says, it was very inspired by Celtic style music and yes Riverdance, which I think was still popular for a few more years at the time. The problem was Fantasmic was a HUGE hit and they were trying to capture that magic with this parade/show that didn't know what it was, and was a project done by committee, constantly throwing in new ideas, rather than a leader with a single vision or storyline.
I only remember one thing with the whole Light Magic thing. The Pixies at one point ask kids to join them in the street to dance. Well I ended up being one of those kids. I remember the pixie dancing with me eventually dropped some glitter or confetti onto my hand so we kept it.
Just so long as you didn’t put in on your tongue, I guess...

I read a story of some guy in the 90's getting laid at Disneyland by one of the Pixie/faerie performers LOL so i guess there is all kinds of..... magic there

I actually have insight on the flying dragon! So the history of the dragon came from a Disney imagineer who didn't work on it directly but worked adjacent to it. They created a special 3D printing machine for the UV reactive filament, The patent was for a experimental airplane officially, and it was in development for 5 years. Disney management decided that instead of spending another 1 to 2 years trying to complete the project, which would center around making the dragon less delicate, so it could reliably fly for multiple weekly shows, The project was terminated. The dragon flew once, they evaluated the wear and tear from that flight and shelved the dragon. The decision ultimately was that too much money had been sunk into it for the payoff, they just weren't willing to put A few more years of money into it.
I remember seeing some video of it that absolutely brought tears to my eyes, it was a magical piece of engineering and hopefully someday they'll decide to take it out of the Disney vault and let the imagineers complete the ambitious dragon.
thats so interesting. so it was almost a mix of safety and cost. you wouldn't want a dragon that could fall at any second be around tons of people.
They were more than happy to sink money into projects that were promptly cancelled and had to require even more money to be dismantled or some stupid fads, but an actual piece of ingenious engineering that can make IRL dragon that can fly and impress the hell out of people and proven to actually work? oh no that's too expensive.
I'm glad they changed the name. "Tinker Bell's Night Magic" sounds like a strip club

i hate how the people who came there acted like they couldn't find out that they decorated the castle. if people only come to take one picture at a castle then they wasted their money.

Omg the guy begging for the dragon to come back is hysterical. Also I love the electrical parade and wish it was more common! The last parade I saw was Magic Happens, in March of last year. It’s so beautiful!
The electrical parade was moved to California adventure after a while, then it had a second farewell. Stop dangling it in front of me.
I think when they made that "promo", they didn't realize just how literal it would be taken...
Interesting to know it was moved to California Adventure. My family has photos of my older brother and mom watching the Electrical Parade at one of the two California parks (we're from between LA and Santa Barbara) taken sometime in 1996.
I love the birthday cake castle. It was my first trip to Disney World after a couple Disneyland trips as a kid. It makes the anniversary instantly recognizable and memorable. Blew my mind as a kid to see the castle as a GIANT cake. Honestly, for a kid, it was a lot more fun than some boring castle.
The castle cake was awesome, and I wish they'd do something similar for the 50th anniversary, but of course, that ain't gonna happen, that wasn't even gonna happen before the whole Corona mess
Obviously this would be almost impossible but imagine if Disney did sort of a villain hosted event associated with the year 2020...I know...2020 jokes are a dime a dozen, sorry.
I'm glad for you that you liked the castle cake, but I absolutely hated it. The castle is an icon, and they should never change it in drastic ways like that. Some people may only get to go once in their lifetime, and they would like to have the classic castle there instead of some gaudy giant cake. I remember going one year when it was only halfway done. Right there, in broad daylight for the entire time I was there, it was half cake on the bottom, and half castle on the top, which a huge, ugly crane sitting there by the castle. Now those were some AWESOME trip photos, let me tell ya!

I don’t understand people complaining about the castle’s overlays. Wouldn’t that just make it more special, since it’s a limited edition? I’d be thrilled. I also think they’re really pretty and well done.

The overlays for the castles honestly sound fucking awesome. Sure you wouldn't get to take your "dream picture" with a run of the mill photo, but instead you would get a photo that would end up being extremely rare, actually one of a kind! It would've been neat to go out to the park on the anniversaries to get photos with the different overlays
I've got one of me in front of the Sorcerer's Hat in 2007. Fantasia is easily one of my top 3 favorite disney films, and I haven't been to Disney's Hollywood Studios since. this would be a good idea.

Imagine how nervous the people were in light magic I mean like the actors/people who are in it :/ they have must of been nervous and had so much pressure it was literary the first dress rehearsal and like 100 or more people watching them and then saying it was horrible they must have been embarrassed

I didn't realize that the Sinbad attraction had been so drastically changed. I've seen ride-through POVs of the current iteration and it still looks like a fantastic, though underrated attraction. What I really dislike is how attractions are changed because of negative guest feedback because "their kids were scared". That's part of what makes attractions like Snow White's Scary Adventures, or DInosaur, or the majority of the classic attractions from Universal Studios Florida so great. Yeah, I was scared of Kongfrontation when I was 5, but neutering it would have been the wrong way to go, just as I'm skeptical of the new Snow White's Magic Wish. I understand that parks need to listen to guest feedback, but far too often I feel that they try to appease the lowest common denominator.
I agree, but it depends on the target audience, and how successful the attraction is at achieving its goals. Like an attraction aimed at an older, thrill-seeking audience at most needs a warning for scaring kids, but if the intention was something family-friendly and suitable for little kids but it turned out too intense, then it's time to edit it.
I remember being terrified of the Dinosaur ride at WDW and am afraid to go back to see if it's still as scary as it was back then (around 2002, I think), but I have a need to do that to conquer my fears. After all, I used to be scared of the Temple of Doom ride in Disneyland, too, but once I got older, it became one of my favorite attractions. Like the T-Rex in the Jurassic Park ride at Universal (I haven't ridden the new version yet), it's a small window of time where I invite the fear; I look forward to having that 1-2 minutes on a ride to let out a Hollywood-level scream being face-to-face with an animatronic that was designed to impress and impose upon guests.
I'm not a horror fan and never will be, but the rides that sent a chill down my spine growing up are now revered in my mind as some of the best I've ever known.
@@BellePullman And that’s exactly what happened to Sinbad ride. The faithfully dark and scary tone of the original Sinbad stories did’nt fit appropriately with the classic animated character designs.
Pretty much the same thing that happened to Snow White's Scary Adventure at WDW Magic Kingdom and Journey to Atlantis at SeaWorld Orlando.
@@NatYourAverageNerd Dinosaur has definitely been toned down in a few ways, but it's still a surprisingly intense experience. I've become very desensitized to it, but I do consider it to be the most intense dark ride ever created, maybe with the exception of Alien Encounter.

My parents were actually at that pass holder preview event for light magic. They don’t remember much, but they told me about it a little while ago before I’d heard about it online. Said it was an absolute mess. Think it’s pretty cool they were able to witness such an infamous mess, lol.

Haha it is basically its a small world with a sinbad theme. Its also kind of hidden in the back of the park, we didnt even know it was there until our second day.

I went to Tokyo disney about 2 years ago and Sinbad was one of my favorite rides! Super charming, an amazing soundtrack written by Alan Menken specifically for the ride, and incredible animatronics!
Imagine if they incorporated modern projection mapping into a parade these days...Tinker bell on the lead float, shooting her wand at the buildings, watching them light up, then the projection effects fade as the parade passes. So much cheaper and more effective now.
So many possibilities.

Nothing will ever be able to replace the electric light parade for me. It’s super nostalgic because I remember seeing it when I was really really little and then it made me cry when I saw it in person again 😅

The 15th Anniversary overlay still is one of the best castle overlays there is, not gonna lie.
The golden statues holding candles on top of all the turrets? That was indeed beautiful.
@@paulp6672 Yup, that one! Still an anniversary overlay, but complemented the castle very well without overwhelming it. Very elegant looking, especially when they lit it up during the Candleabration ceremony every night.
The 15th overlay was even more beautiful in real life, as the shine of all the spires and candles sparkled with the sun, my favorite from dlp
As far as Disneyland birthday decorations go, it certainly wasn’t the worst (although I personally prefer the castles “pure”), but it could have done without the tacky “15” stuck to the front of the castle (especially since they extended the birthday with a year without changing the number).
I just got the juxtaposition between the names Tomorrowland and Yesterworld, despite bingewatching how many videos by now

Sure, the old Sinbad ride was pretty unique, but damn is the new ride one hell of an amazing experience; Chandu is MAGIC. The music is also not just any pretty darn catchy musical score, it's an Alan Menken composed song!

11:30 This is dorky of me, but when the guy said "The farewell season has ended", all I could think of was that one Eggman PA announcement from Sonic Colors "And that concludes the Light Speed Electrical Parade".

6:30 A family friend of mine worked for Disney World, and so I heard about the dragon a while before its release! From what I recall, it was meant to happen every night in place of Tinkerbell's flight, but my guess is that it was either too costly or too dangerous to do every night, so it was made into a one-time event instead. Still - here's hoping it makes a comeback someday!
well they also had it where only reporters and stuff could see it, id think its something to do with safety.
Maybe I was oblivious but I was working in Magic Kingdom the entire week of the New Fantasyland expansion opening and this is the first time I’m hearing about the dragon at the press event. No fair, Disney!!

My first visit to WDW was during the 25th anniversary with the giant cake castle. I loved it! I know that it wasn't how the castle normally looked and that I'd never seen the normal look before, but I didn't care - I knew that it was a special time and that I'd never get another chance to see the castle as a giant cake!
I’ve actually been to Tokyo Disneyland Resort and I got to ride Sinbad’s Storybook Adventure.
The Alan Menken theme song heard throughout the entire ride kept me imagining what an animated Disney Sinbad movie based on this ride would look like.
With the current trend with the disney movies, i won't be surprised if they do a live action very soon
Those castle overlays are fantastic and creative. The solution seems simple to me: tell people far in advance that a castle overlay will be happening on a particular date so that people who want photos with the original castle won't plan a trip for that day.
Disney needs to bring back the dragon tech for the WDW 50th anniversary. Imagine a dragon flying around and then tink before whatever night firework show they have planned with the castle overlay

Speaking of avatar, I know this is going to incite many fans, but I think that was one of the biggest blunders. The only reason why they wanted to work with James Cameron was because it was such a blockbuster. They were thinking with their wallets not trying to develop their own story that would’ve been just as big!
Yes, they’ve used other properties like Lucasfilm, CBS, Muppets and MGM in other parks… But we’ve seen what happened to that. The partnerships and then they have to rethink them… Or they just buy it LOL
Should have mentioned the flying X-Wing drones along with the Dragon. A lot of development effort going into something only used once.

so someone commented. it was meant to be a weekly show however it was too costly and took wear and tear only after that first flight. so they put into storage and was to never be used again, its a true shame.
I wonder how long Light Magic would have lasted even with better staging, costumes, etc, because so much of it was based on the popularity of Riverdance.
Look, Light Magic had one really great lasting impact on Disneyland Park, and it’s the upgraded sound system that was put in along the parade route for the show. If nothing else, there’s that one fact lol.
HEY! I was there for the big cake castle and I LOVED IT. I was also, like, 6? But still!
I watched Light Magic debut on tv. They hyped it up so much, and it was such a poor replacement for the Main Street Electrical Parade. I remember my mom and I kind of being like, "Well that was stupid...what the heck was that?" It really was a huge blunder.
That Jester castle for Disneyland Paris was gorgeous! I would have loved to be there!
Speaking as someone who grew up in FL and went to the parks often due to family members and friends' family members working there, the birthday cake castle was a fun novelty for me. I remember getting excited in the beginning because at first, it was just a pink coat of paint, and pink is my favorite color. I don't remember if I knew/linked it to the Disneyland castle being pink. So I can understand why the tourists were miffed, but I honestly thought it was great.
Man, my teenage self was so thrilled over that tacky 25 birthday cake castle! I remember learning about it on the Disney Channel, and I was so excited for our vacation!
(On the other hand, my family got to go every couple of years, so in hindsight I can understand why people would have been upset.)
I’ve never even been to Florida much less WDW, but I really wanted to see that thing after seeing it on the Disney Channel.
My uncle was thought all about the wonders of pixie dust. Now he has a new roommate named Bruno and we’ll see him in 3 to 6.
The people who stole from Disney shops during the light magic parade are some really bold people. I’m a native Floridian and visit Disney parks often. The thought of stealing from a Disney shop has never crossed my mind.
I feel like a majority of the blunders of Disney in the 80s and 90s can all be summed up by Eisner got in the way

Ha, looks like Kuzco was part of Disneyland way back then! Poor llamas running for their lives:):) I still would've loved to see that circus, because I totally would've been a major Mickey Mouse Club fan;)

Man oh MAN, do I wish I could've seen that original Sinbad's Seven Voyages, THAT LOOKS AMAZING! I LOVE IT! Just my thing! Imagine if The Black Cauldron was an Aladdin story instead and all of those elements were actually part of it, they fit with the tone of that movie just a little too well! Would vastly improve it in MY opinion;)
Believe me, the Sinbad ride as a kid was TERRIFYING. Our family used to go to TDR every year since 2003 (stopped since covid doesn't let us travel) and as a kid, we actively avoided the Sinbad ride. I promise you, IRL the giant IS HUGE. The monkeys were freaky as hell and as a kid, I was terrified that the boulders were pushing were ACTUALLY going to fall. Our family used to coordinate our seating such that my sister and I sat in the middle while my parents sat on the outside because we were so scared. Then years passed and they changed it!!! It's one of my favourite rides in TDS now and the song that plays throughout the ride is so heartwarming!!!

I rode sinbad a year ago in tokyo sea and there was never a line 😢 it's one of the best dark rides I've ever been on but it incredibly underappreciated
I rode it 4 times when I went in 2019. The longest I had to wait was 5 minutes. What an amazing ride. The music was so catchy

Light Magic should’ve been a much proper nighttime parade with numerous floats that never stop moving and make occasional stops along the parade route!
Yup, in my opinion the biggest part of its downfall was simply not giving the creative team enough time to work out the logistics...because all the basic elements were there for a huge success, it was just super rushed and too many corners were cut, along with not solving the "floats never move" problem, which according to one of my sources, had a solution but was cut due to budget constraints.

So I haven’t heard a ton about DisneySEA but DEFINITELY had never heard of the Sinbad ride. I see why things were tweaked but the thing that strikes me the most is just how impressive those little animatronics are! For something that isn’t too detailed and pretty small, they have a surprising amount of fluidity and expressiveness.
I was there for the premiere of Light Magic and actually have Tinkerbell's disastrous short flight on video somewhere. It was an amazing effect for about 10 seconds.
Closing down Muppets Great Moments in History was a huge mistake!

The music that was used to accompany the dragon's flight for the New Fantasyland press event was from the underrated masterpiece, Treasure Planet.

It was one of those things where I thought it could easily be covered in a short segment...but realized near the end, it definitely deserved its own episode.
A light magic episode would be amazing. Love when you do videos about remnants of old attractions (like the light magic towers or nature's wonderland remnants)
Personally, the original Sinbad seems so much cooler than the overhaul, adding a bit of fear to the tame ride. I wish they could’ve kept it and just added an “Oh, there are some scary bits, so if your kid is scared of this stuff, don’t ride” somewhere.
I'm still in the first part of the video, but I have to tell you, those SCREECHING MONKEYS had me literally wheezing in my seat with laughter. oh my lord.

The Circus fiasco in the early days of Disneyland is just hilarious. Really, you mean gypsy circus folk didn't uphold to the wholesome Disney standard? Disney's various attempts to have live animals in the park is just precious in how naïve it was to think animals could work consistently every single day in a loud and crowded theme park environment.

Am I the only one whose never liked the theme to the electric parade? I mean, the floats are great but man, that music always gave me anxiety the few times I got to go to Disney World!
You might be one of very few people, and I am not one of them because that music brings me great joy when I'm not having the best day. I grew up listening to the soundtrack that my parents bought because the parade was long gone by the time I was growing up, but they remembered it fondly from their youth. When I finally had a chance to see the revamped edition in 2018, I remember crying tears of joy when the Pete's Dragon float came along. Not only is that float iconic from this parade, but I grew up loving the 1970's film, so it already held a special place in my heart.
I hope I see it again someday.
@@NatYourAverageNerd Look, I agree that the parade itself is visually-stunning. My reaction to the music is probably just one of my being on the spectrum quirks (like how I can't stand the touch of foam). I'd still take it over It's A Small World.
I’ve only been to TDR once & loved the Sinbad ride. It must’ve been the newer version as it wasn’t scary at all & the song was so darned catchy we revisited that ride many times during our stay.
Ah, the “Paul Pressler years”: Considered by many to not be the best years for Disney that’s for sure.
I will say that people have strong opinions about Sinbad. Some loved the old version and some hated it. There was no middle ground. I loved the old version personally.

The change between the sinbad rides is so interesting. It feels like something out of a simpsons episode, the way they repurposed the movements. Going from dangling people to playing an instrument. Sure.
@@thewholecircus the giant is my favorite part of that ride but I really feel like he doesn’t do much when playing the instrument. The singing voice saves it. But yeah knowing he was dangling people like that, so much movement. He’s so huge I wish I could have seen how intimidating that is.
