id like to say personaly from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!!! i just had problems with my brushed vintage motor and with your tutorial here it help me a lot. I cleaned it with sand paper and put grease on it and BLAMO! it works better then ever. TY once again
i saw some comments below including one with Team brood racing....now i have two custom brood motors in my rock crawler and this video helped me out 10 fold.... i had never taken a motor apart before watching this video. the problem that came up with my custom motors was the timing ring or end bell retainer came loose and the hole end bell and ring came loose and i was freaking out and didn't know what to do. so as usual google is your friend and when i searched , this video was one of the first three things that came up so thanks to this video i was able to fix my own motor......THANKS SO MUCH IT HELPED OUT GREATLY
Video was pretty helpful for me. Most specifically the part about the timing marks. I picked up a used Losi XXX buggy and it had a Speed Gems Topaz motor in it. I wanted to take it apart to clean it since I wasn't sure if it was ever done. (and judging by how filthy it was it hadn't been). I put all the shims, etc, back in and seated the brushes but the motor would just stutter and not spin when I tested it. Turns out i'd not known about the timing and had the end clocked wrong. I set the timing to neutral per the indicators given in this video. (the marks on the end and can) And it spun right up like it should. And so did my brother's Associated B4 which we also cleaned. So this video saved some frustration as none of the other videos i'd watched even mentioned taking note of the timing.
@rcnightmare amongst many, the biggest issue with this video is that your not using a lathe, your simply cleaning up the surface of the comm. comm concentricity is much more important then the color and shine. by sanding it youve thrown off round and youve damaged the surface.
@lastpally Totally agree, I think you should shoot a video for us, so we can compare the methods, I have spoken with Brandon and he's been using this for years and is confused which part you think would "ruin" motors, shoot the video, and we will be happy to post it up on our channel to show people an alternative method.
Adding magnets on the outside can speed a motor up, but I couldn't tell you what kind of power increase, if any, would be. Worth experimenting, it does work, I've done it on large scooter motors, but no real world testing other than putting magnets on the outside of the casing.
@rcnightmare very thorough job! thank you! im in the process of buying the 1/18 animus (also because of your other vid on it) (my brushless setup is getting to boring for my tinkering needs) thanks guys keep up the great work :)
very carefully...... smack! lol nice video helped out allot i'm used to brushless so when i started modding an ECX Boost with with a brushed setup i didn't know what i was doing
Thank you for sharing this, I know it's old but this is why we need folks like you! I have never serviced one before and now I know. I have a HH TM that's in need of assistance... Is it possible to use some contact cleaner before reassembly or is that not advisable?
@rcnightmare ive been watching you for some time now thanks to RCSparks aka Medic and his vids. like really i just finished my motor.as soon as i watch this i started working on my rig because i figure this would help and it sooo did.. now one question. how should i set my timing and how would either or benefit me? This is in my Crawler btw
Hey bro. Great video. you made mention of timing several times. what is the time and how does it affect the motor proformance. also what do you mean by retarding or advancing the timing.
I know ur busy but could u make a vid on how you can take apart a traxxas Titan 550 or 775. Because I'd rather take it apart to keep it good and running. I can't figure out.
@JesterSpec yes..agreed...don't watch my videos....don't post on them either, you are clearly superior in every way, can't realy understand why you would be watching this in the first place. Please continue saving the world :)
@Rcnation101 yes you can put brushless motors on crawlers, that's all I use, I don't like getting into deep water anyways so no problem... novak rooster 18.5 is all I use
@rcnightmare ive got an old (15+ years) accociated motor and im trying to take it apart and see if its still usable and i followed all the steps but once i backed out the screws the endbell wouldnt budge, any ideas?
Plz answer my brushed motor stopped working there was no smoke or any rocks went in to it is it the old brushes that's in there and how do I time the motor
Sorry been on vacation. I have no problem doing that for you. But I can't demonstrate cutting the comm. My lathe is somewhere in storage. But ill explain the pros and cons of both care tips. My video quality wont be on par with you as my only recorder is my smart phone.
@lastpally Ignorance...is something you should take look into my late night troll. Twenty years doing something, yet you continue to post, and I continue to respond exactly the same, instead of wasting everyones time trolling, you should just record your own video and post it as a response to this so people can see how expert you are.
Do you know how to fix my monster truck? It has the lights and mine has bullets in front and it shoots by itself when i turn it on,lights still work and my controller the anteane is off, still can put it back in and the light on the controller still works, the truck cant go foward or backward and cant turn left or right
@nitroguy360 maybe Brandon and I can do a tutorial on it tonight to help everyone, I mean he understands timing way better than I do...hopefully it can wait..
@TeamBroodRacing couldn't disagree more..when you have rebuilt as many motors sucessfully as we have then write a long winded comment like this...all the best...no one way to do any one thing...please stick to ur own preferred methods out there should you want to...
@TeamBroodRacing naw...not going to "google bate" if I wanted to do that..I'd google myself...never herad of ya..nor' do I care much about "your" company... congrats on the success selling your motors...hope yoru hard work continues to pay off.
@lastpally lol don't get why this particular video has brought on all these haters, if you have 20 years in the business why in the hell would you even be watching this video...riddle me that...ALL my motors continue to work great, do it your way should you wish, no one way to do anything...didn't say that.
@TeamBroodRacing heres the thing, links back to your website are bound to the url, not that actual site, so my point is if you were as "famous" as you say I believe more than 1 site on the entire internet would link to you, however, if you truely have rebuilt thousands of motors and have a better way, then you would be doing a favor sharing the knowledge.OS commerce is a very powerful platform but you need some work on the backend coding..best of luck on the rebuild.Sorry for your misfortune
I have a problem with my 390 RC motor. It runs but doesnt at top rpm. It looks like if the electricity cant flow through at all. Just for a couple of seconds and then It gets dead.
I wish the brushes on helion animus 18 sc was that easy to replace. Its one of those motors were if the brushes are gone. Your out of luck. That's why I'm find upgrades for a brushless
@rcnightmare you should care...when a well known, highly respected, and successful rc motor builder tells you that you are doing it wrong, there's a damn good chance that you are.
@TeamBroodRacing lol...then you know urls are not case sensative...wow....I wonder why you keep responding...you should check me out a little before picking a fight especially on this topic....like I said...best of luck to you and all your championships...seriously congrats....focus on that..not a single vid on youtube.. its better not to try and argure internet marketing..its not doing favors for you...Best of Luck To Your Team honestly going forward.
The the only thing I have to gain from this is to inform the people that watch your video to learn something is the information you provide is wrong and I do not wish for anyone to waste their hard earned cash and destroy their motor BC they watched this thinking they are doing the right thing. Stop being ignorant and listen to people that have experience in this industry.
Fyi. Comm oil is design for comm lathes to prevent the comm from wrapping do to heat when cutting the comm. Not to use as a lubricate for brushes on the comm. The oil will reduce electrical conductivity and also attract dirt causing a hung brush that can damage the motor. And the area that holds the brushes is called the brushhoods not a cage. Please learn about motor yourself before you make a instructional video on how to service them.
@TeamBroodRacing also if you were so famous why exactly do you have a grand totaly of 2 links to yoru website? Why rock the 1990's design?..why have terrible affiliate links to oscommerce on your site and not even have it setup right?..why does your site get less visitors in a month then we do in a day...yea...famous alright...go pick this fight with someone who 1...cares...2...isn't as smart....thanks for this tips though, I look forward to your vid showing the better way...
@crmetsker72 lol..like I said...well respect..thats all relative....and I look forward to his video...rather than post comments like this...trying to dick measure...record your own better tutorial as a response. :) Be well.
It would have been a different story if you took the constructive criticism and actually ask why and what you're doing is wrong. People(including myself) would have been more then happy to tell you the right way to rebuild a motor and share what we know so you can help people that watch your videos to learn. Yet you have this "I don't care mindset" BC you do not like to hear you're wrong. No one wants to ruin a 50dollar motor.
@TeamBroodRacing well...its sad really that you actually think "I" wrote that...hahahahaha clearly it is a part of seach engine optimization/content marketing. Go back to your crawling forum stay there....I will be sure to have the link builders remove the content/links so you can sleep at night. :)
I'm not following teambr00d but I know who they are from racing and they have a great reputation as one of the fastest motors around. And the only way I saw you're video BC someone linked it in the Traxxas forum and watched it and saw hoe completely wrong your information is. And a novice video needs to be correct as everyone that is watching your video is trying to learn atleadt the basics on how to service a motor...which you failed at doing yourself.
@TeamBroodRacing yea I honestly would if I were you, I would dedicate the rest of your life to "googling" things. :) Don't really care much for this conversation anymore I am bored with it...lol...
Wow...been doing it wrong for 10years. You're telling people that spend their hard earned cash to basically destroy their motor. People watch your video loking for the CORRECT information. And when people that have more knowledge and experience in this field(myself with almost 20years and I also work for a industrial motor service center) tell you you're doing it wrong you should listen and care. But you blast them and with ignorance tell them you don't care.
@lastpally like I said, why don't you head on back to your little forum with your two decades of experience instead of watching novice videos, not sure what you have to gain, but for your buddies down below, you are just coming off as morons, doubts its going to help "team br00d" sell anything.
Wow...this video on how to rebuild a brush motor is completely wrong. You never ever sand a comm...ever. Plus the fact that you have no idea who Teambr00d was(one of the best motor tuners in the industry) shows you shouldn't even talk about motor maintenance. For everyone...Google Big Jim Greenmayer(best motor builder before his death) motor blackbook and on the hobbytalk forum shows the correct way to work on a motor.
You shouldn't even start talking about spelling nor grammar. I'm not trolling for the fun of it. It's the fact that your so call instructional video has false information. Your slogan is "we put the control back in radio control" yet all this video shows is how to destroy a motor. And BC these people are novices they have no idea what's right or wrong.

Nice! I have a Tekin 35T and this definitely is a valuable video for maintenance later on. Thanks!
great video,i needed to see this being new to rc,i didn't know half of what i learned from this video
@Danboarding thanks much, glat to hear we could help
Adding magnets on the outside can speed a motor up, but I couldn't tell you what kind of power increase, if any, would be. Worth experimenting, it does work, I've done it on large scooter motors, but no real world testing other than putting magnets on the outside of the casing.

very thorough job! thank you! im in the process of buying the 1/18 animus (also because of your other vid on it) (my brushless setup is getting to boring for my tinkering needs) thanks guys keep up the great work :)
thanks man that is wat im going to do on my brushed motors
This video is PERFECT. Thanks!
very carefully...... smack! lol nice video helped out allot i'm used to brushless so when i started modding an ECX Boost with with a brushed setup i didn't know what i was doing
Brushless motor requires much much more less maintenance but it still does.
Will you be making a video for brushless motor too ?
Thank you for sharing this, I know it's old but this is why we need folks like you! I have never serviced one before and now I know. I have a HH TM that's in need of assistance... Is it possible to use some contact cleaner before reassembly or is that not advisable?
nice vid man!
@rcnightmare well i will screw with my timing for now and wait for your post. Thanks again man!!
@purplewolfpimp glad to hear you liked it!
@blabloomoo I am not sure, I think we could host them on our site for download but that would take some time
@rcnightmare ive been watching you for some time now thanks to RCSparks aka Medic and his vids. like really i just finished my motor.as soon as i watch this i started working on my rig because i figure this would help and it sooo did..

Thanks for the video, What is the motor spacer for? I lost mine, smaller than rours tough, the one in the opposite side of the comm (tekin 35t HD).
I know ur busy but could u make a vid on how you can take apart a traxxas Titan 550 or 775. Because I'd rather take it apart to keep it good and running. I can't figure out.

Hi rcnightmare
What are the names of the Two Different oil you use?
@rcnightmare ive got an old (15+ years) accociated motor and im trying to take it apart and see if its still usable and i followed all the steps but once i backed out the screws the endbell wouldnt budge, any ideas?
Would wet sanding be better than dry?
ok i did give u the thumbs up dude.;]
Will this fix a motor that puffed out some smoke and stopped working? Or is this just maintenance please lmk
Cj Dunlap This is just maintenance. But when you take your motor apart you could discover the issue. Could be a burnt up com.
do u know how to make a brushed motor go faster without bedding or how to change timing if u do can u plz make a video
Plz answer my brushed motor stopped working there was no smoke or any rocks went in to it is it the old brushes that's in there and how do I time the motor
Is it the old brushers that's in there
probably need new brushes

Where'd u get the bearing oil?
@higgout basically slow it down or speed it up
@nitroguy360 maybe Brandon and I can do a tutorial on it tonight to help everyone, I mean he understands timing way better than I do...hopefully it can wait..
can you make a download version of this video so i can do this along with no glitching delays. thanks
@traxxas5308 traxxas motors are not rebuildable but just after 2 hrs of run take em off the truck and run in water till dust and particles are removed
@JrEtrnty thank you hope it helped.
@TeamBroodRacing couldn't disagree more..when you have rebuilt as many motors sucessfully as we have then write a long winded comment like this...all the best...no one way to do any one thing...please stick to ur own preferred methods out there should you want to...

@nitroguy360 wow! This is totally why we do this. Hopefully we earned your subscription :) If we already had it, hopefully you told some friends :)
@lastpally lol don't get why this particular video has brought on all these haters, if you have 20 years in the business why in the hell would you even be watching this video...riddle me that...ALL my motors continue to work great, do it your way should you wish, no one way to do anything...didn't say that.
@3WHEELERMAN8483S I am really glad it heled you, I know it got kind of long but it really needed to be
@rcnightmare An eraser, cut to the dimensions of the motor brushes, will do the same job...and there is no need to disassemble the motor.
@luisvazquez95 thats always a good idea.
@TomDonson we could take a look...
@gda882002
yes, a lot actually, specially on crawlers/scalers and so many aplications
I have a motor of these and when I connect to power just makes a humming and vibrating like but I do not rotate?
How often do u need to repair brushed motors ruffly
@TeamBroodRacing heres the thing, links back to your website are bound to the url, not that actual site, so my point is if you were as "famous" as you say I believe more than 1 site on the entire internet would link to you, however, if you truely have rebuilt thousands of motors and have a better way, then you would be doing a favor sharing the knowledge.OS commerce is a very powerful platform but you need some work on the backend coding..best of luck on the rebuild.Sorry for your misfortune
I bought a lathe do it should be here Friday. Ill do my best with my phone....ill just need the lighting.
Hey EVERYONE! So Glad You're Checking Out This Video! Hope you SUBSCRIBE, and Give it the THUMBS UP if you like it :)
I have a problem with my 390 RC motor. It runs but doesnt at top rpm. It looks like if the electricity cant flow through at all. Just for a couple of seconds and then It gets dead.
@BSRCer Thanks bro
@lastpally we'll send ya one....or come out here
@xxgg oh yea...you know we are :)
@gda882002 i still use a couple in some of my bashers. team orion revolution 12x2 is a beast
I wish the brushes on helion animus 18 sc was that easy to replace. Its one of those motors were if the brushes are gone. Your out of luck. That's why I'm find upgrades for a brushless
how do I fix mine it wont go into reverse or stop ?
@gda882002 I would be willing to bet, worldwide the amount of people using brushed motors FAR exceeds those using brushless.
waterproof
My motor dosent have the screws on top so can't get the motor apart
Then you have a stock sealed motor that is not made to take apart to replace or clean up the internal parts of the motor.
@leef0324uk. Brushed motors are water proof though lol :)
@lastpally Spelling & Grammar my friend are important skills when trying to flex intellectual superiority...
@rcnightmare you should care...when a well known, highly respected, and successful rc motor builder tells you that you are doing it wrong, there's a damn good chance that you are.
@lastpally lol...been doing this 10 years...don't really care about teambr00d...or people who come by just to post moronic hate on our vids....cya!
Some do have timing, some dont. I think you are misunderstanding something.
my motor has a fuse or something soldered on the case! cant open with out unsoldering it!! grrrrr!!!!
@crmetsker72 lol the great thing is I dont care "who" I am talking to...

this is more like regular maintenance rather than a rebuild...
dose anyone used a brushed motor anymore??

Thank god for brushless.
I bought instructions from inplix and I builded it very very cheap.
