Hi, whats the Best settings for sharp full screen focus for brickwork/architectural deadpan shots? Also can this camera produce quality A0 size prints?
Probably cose down the aperture to f8 or higher and use a tripod. Image quality wise you should be able to print A0 size prints. But you can't expect enormous sharpness from close distance to the print.
Positive Film is a look that is based on positive slide film. It is usually very vibrant. There are no benefits, it's just a different look than the standard colors. I set the sharpness to -2 because the camera sharpens the jpeg files automatically. "0" doesn't mean the sharpness is off. If you don't want any sharpness added to your files go down to the lowest value. The focus is not affected by this.

Deine Videos sind nicht ganz unschuldig daran, dass ich mir gestern eine GR III geholt habe. Dieses Video ist auch nach 3 Jahren immer noch sehr sehr hilfreich für den Anfang. Danke!
Great and very useful video, Samuel! I use many of the same settings on my GR III. My slightly different approach includes: • full press snap off - I find I don't wait long enough between half and full press when I'm auto focusing a quick street photo. So I turned full press snap off in order to keep the camera from getting confused. • area AF + face detect on, so far the camera has done a good job focusing on the right thing without needing to focus and recompose, but if I need that extra level of control, I use instead: • touch to AF + take photo... one tap on my selected subject and it takes the photo. You can even hold and use the camera this way with your left hand! Keep up the good work!
This was an excellent presentation. I just purchased a GR111X and your video was exactly what I was looking for to walk me through the settings and use of the camera. I found it easy to follow and use. Thanks for presenting it.
This video was incredibly useful for me as I just got the gr3 and felt both overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time by it. Mainly a manual film shooter, I got the gr3 as a super compact partner to my film photography and for a casual EDC camera but I still want to be in control an not just buy an expensive point and shoot (which the gr3 definitely feels like in default mode) Now that you explained how you use it I think it’ll be a great camera to use. I love the idea of having separate AE and AF buttons! The snap focus will also be really fun to use I bet. Thanks for this awesome video! This is a great video. I watched this a few months ago when I first bought this camera and used this guide to set up the U1 preset thinking that I would use it occasionally and just shoot my own way first but I find that I primarily shoot in this mode and now can't image not using the FN button to focus on any other camera. Being able to turn off the LED light for focussing and that annoying focussing sound is great too as I'm easily annoyed by such features. I primarily shoot in raw and edit in camera raw via adobe bridge as I really enjoy the ability to add my style to each photograph. For me it's similar to an artist and their distinctive style.
I love all your videos Samuel. As I continue my research for my first real camera and scour videos, I look forward to coming back and viewing something on your channel. Your videos are just so pleasant, professionally informative, and you do an excellent job with them as a whole. Thank you!
I stumbled across your channel whilst researching the Ricoh GRiii,I’ve really enjoyed your content and I’ve now ordered one. Thanks very much, you’ve definitely helped my decision to buy a Ricoh again,I had the GRi many years ago.
Many thanks for this video that simplifies a lot the use and settings of the Ricoh GR III, especially for beginners like me. I have not found a video as straightforward as yours in youtube.
@@SamuelStreetlife One more question Samuel. Did you post a video about how to create Presets ? I would like to learn more on that aspect, especially with a Ricoh GR III it would be a very nice experience. Many thanks. Lassana
Bought this camera about a month ago and already took some awesome pictures. Thought I'd spend a few moments this evening going through this video and some settings to see if there was anything that I'd missed. Thanks mate - just picked up my new Giii x this afternoon and after a couple of hours of watching your video and exploring the settings menus I feel I now everything I need to know to get going.
This is super useful, thanks! I’m considering buying this, but wanted to know more about the features and manual options. As a Fuji shooter, the ability to tweak and customize is essential. Clearly, this P&S camera is much more versatile than I expected.
Man, I really want to stick with Fujifilm but after all your videos I’m definitely going to buy a gr iii. This video is gold for street photographers, thank you!
I hope you have concidered it well because the camera that is right for me doesn't need to be right for everyone. You also cannot compare a system like fujifilm with lot's of different camera bodies and lenses to a single compact camera that has a fixed 28mm lens :) The GR can be a great addition to a fuji kit. Just don't want to be give a false image and want everyone to make their own decision :)Because I love 28mm, the GR is ideal for me.
B&H just got a new shipment of RICOH GR III in and I put in my order. It's arriving tomorrow. Your Settings suggestions came just in time. Also, your previous GR III review was why I decided to try the Ricoh over my Fuji X100 T upgrade. Thanks for the Photo Love!
Thank you Samuel for the video. It is perhaps the best how to video I have seen for a camera set up. I had a chance to shoot with the GRIIIX for a few hours. It is truly a professional camera in a housing that looks like a toy!! Fear not, this is a professional grade camera capable of extremely high quality imaging. The image quality can easily compete with my Sony A7RIV and pro grade lenses I use with it. Ricoh has hit a home run with the GRIII/GRIIIX.
Bought my GR3x last month for holiday......so far so good.......still on the long learning curve.....!!! Great video +subscribed..!!..Best wishes from Plymouth UK..!!
I’ve just got my first Ricoh camera ever. You saved me! Thanks a lot Samuel! I’m learning a lot from your videos, they are so fun and inspiring to watch!!
What Can I say? I just sold my Fuji XF10 which I liked, but there were some annoyances, so I just received my Ricoh GR lll. Thank you for all your contributions and tutorials. I think this camera will change the way I work. My other cameras are The Fuji XE2s and the Fuji XH1.. love them both! Thanks again.
the snapfocus(FP) is the unique function of GR series (XF10 do have it but barely cant adjust anymore) that's why I bought GR3 for my backup camera with it held in my neck while using D850 in the street
I've been using this camera for a while now, and I always get away with manual mode but leave the ISO in auto mode. I set the upper and lower limits to the same as Samuel. I then have control over the Aperture and shutter, and I push and pull each setting based on the light and what I am shooting.
thank you for the effort and work. Although I hardly speak english and needed the subtitles translated into german, almost everything went perfectly. all the best peter
I love how modest Europeans are about their English skills when in fact many of them have a better command of the language than the average American, lol.
I’m glad I didn’t skip the first 12 minutes. The 2 playback mode button presses I didn’t know about. I have had what I think is a lot of success using auto focus for street photography. But I will have to try Select AF. I also find your use of centre weighted metering interesting. I will have to try this. I think the difference between these two metering modes are pretty much over looked by street photographers, I could be wrong. Many thanks for an interesting and informative video.
Glad to hear you learned something! I know alot of photographers who use the middle AF point together with center weighted metering. It is very convenient to expose that way. But not always the best way to shoot fast. But it gives me the best control over my exposure
Don't know much about cameras. I'll have to revisit this if I ever buy one. However, I noticed you have the apple trackpad and keyboard. They make a third party accessory that connects them together to make a single peripheral! I use the keyboard but never got around to buying the trackpad. I would look into it if you're interested!
You do some great videos btw! I have been solely a fuji user until I got this GRiii and enjoyed the many sources of info on how to set up the fuji cameras incl books (e.g., Tony Phillips). Thus I am disappointed in the GRiii, given its long and legendary history that the only book I can find is in Chinese and can not find any complete run thrus on how to set up the camera menu. You do a pretty good job here and on a podcast you did with a guy in a striped shirt, but it still leaves questions. Took me the longest time to figure out where the other 3 user settings were for example!! (recall). I know it would be a boatload of work for you or someone, but I would certainly appreciate a COMPLETE video on settings, perhaps even a downloadable pdf or website. Maybe some day when there is another lock down and you have the time???? Your knowlege of the GR seems the best I have seen on the web...is there another source I could go to? Thanks for any support. And sincere thanks for the work you have already put into this.
This is amazing. Thanks so much for sharing. I set it up exactly as you did but I don't think my snapmode work. I do a full press but the focus is never there. Does anyone else have this problem?

shutter button needs AF+AE to work, I've been crazy about this the whole day
I have been struggling with this as well. When I back-button focus, the resulting focal point does not change when I do a full snap whike the shutter button is set to AE-lock. I'm only able to resolve this by setting the shutter button to AF+AE lock. Still, the video is a very nice walkthrough of camera settings.
Big Head Taco haha -- I nearly choked on my coffee, hilarious. Excellent video. I'm always fascinated how other photographer's set up their cameras. I'm thoroughly enjoying my GRIII. I set my side movie mode button to be able to quickly change film simulations. I love the Positive Film as well (I might have set mine one more degree of saturation compared to yours). I also think the Ricoh black and white simulations are amazing. Very unique. They are so good that I'm actually finding myself using SOOC JPG's. Something I've never done in my other cameras. Although the DNG files have a lot of opportunity to really push and pull results -- this is a powerful little camera. Better than I had hoped. It's now my take with me everywhere daily camera. Interestingly enough, it has changed how I am shooting in the streets compared to my OMD's and Panasonic's. So much fun! I'm still very much eyeing the Fuji system though... Thanks for all the valuable information you are sharing with us.
Hey Alex, glad to hear you enjoy the GRIII as much as I do! The black & white filters of the GRII are really special. I really love to use them for my Jpegs, too!
Thank you for that impressive description Samuel. I’m right new to the GR (Urban SE 🤩) though I will set up mine step by step according to your video. I’m wondering if there might a PDF to download? 😅 … cheers from my hood!!
Great video. You covered a lot of stuff at high speed but kept it very clear. I had to use the back button quite a lot to reinforce some of the points but that's just because I am new to the GRIII.
Note : The highlight priority is available on most of the Olympus camera. Got an OMD EM10 mk2 before getting the GR, and it was present (since 2014) with highlight and shadow mode. And I guess it's not specific to Ricoh to have this feature. AND of course, thanks for all this content about the GR. Amazing little camera.
Considering the camera mainly for street and as I need something pocketable and light. This is an awesome video, it reassured me that I can have control and flexibility. The other option is iPhone 15 pro but I have issues with control and of course how Apple process images. Thank you for posting
Thanks Samuel for taking the timeout to create this splendid tutorial and keep up the good work. I bought a GR I recently and have really enjoyed using it but now after watching this I want the GRIII.
Thank you Maurice! The GRI is still an awesome camera! The upgrade you get with the GRIII is minor and mostly image quality based. The GRI can create amazing images as well :)
such a great video. just acquired the new ricoh gr iii street edition and happy alreay with the image quality. coming out from fuji cameras this menu seems soooo intuitive. thanks for your dedication to this camera, as i think is the greatest!
Hey ! Ive seen your videos for the last two years and two days ago bought a GrII! Trying to take those settings to my camera , but a video about the GrII settings would be great!!! Thanks so much !
Because the memories also store manual focus distance, I have 2 of my user recalls set for Hyperfocal Distance. For example 1/400 sec at f11 auto ISO focus at 2m. Or 1/250 sec at f8, Auto ISO focus at 2.5m. Camera then becomes a point and shoot, and in this mode I have the Fn key set for either single or low continuous shooting. The third memory I too have one like your “master” and also with back button focus.
Maybe time for vid on GRIII gear? Just ordered JJC thumb rest (Amazon) & see that they also make a UV filter that sticks on lens. Any thoughts on this?
Man, you put some much pressure on me by your videos that I had to drive to Manhattan camera store in a middle of all this Coronavirus craziness, and buy GRiii in emergency mode. I tried it yesterday going to Bronx. Tons of bad photos but several that I really I liked. I realize that this toy needs to be studied and practiced. Huge thanks to share your knowledge. The main challenge to me is the lack of EVF. In bright light I basically shoot in blind. Any idea how to help it? Your admirer forever. Irina.
Hello Irina, that is wonderful to hear! Congrats to your GRIII. It is a great documentary camera for these crazy times we are in right now. Not having a Viewfinder can be a problem sometimes but for me the highest brightness setting is usually bright enough. Ricoh also made two optical viewfinders that you can attach to the hotshoe. They are very plain viewfinders with no communicating to the camera so I would only use it if I absolutely cannot see anything. That's all the options you have unfortunately. And I agree with you, the GRIII is camera for photographers with some experience. But once you set it up the way you like it, it becomes very intuitive. Even I learn new ways of using the GRIII almost every day :) Happy shooting & stay safe, Samuel.
Hi and thanks for the great videos. I found the work around to have full press snap focus and Fn button autofocus at the same time: 1. In Still shooting menu: -'Focus' to Snap -'Full Press Snap' to On 2. In Customize settings menu: -'Shutter button setting' to AE Lock -'FN Button Setting' -> 'Fn button' to Enable AF -'FN Button Setting' -> 'Focus settings' to Select AF (or whatever apart from 'Same as shutter' or ' Snap') This way you have the ability to autofocus with the FN button while retaining snap focus ability by full pressing the shutter. Keep up the good work and stay safe! Cheers
Yes! I discovered this too! But you need to hold focus with the back button in order to focus outside of the snap focus distance. Otherwise it will jump back to the snap focus distance. But it is a useful workaround. Thanks for sharing!
I've just got this camera and I honestly can't believe it. I used to use the TAV mode but now it's gone! I would use the front and back dials to set shutter speed and aperture, the camera would choose the appropriate ISO. I would lock that exposure and could make adjustments with the exposure comp. lever, or with either of the dials depending on what I wanted to change. It was so easy!! Now this!! OMG!!
@@SamuelStreetlife yes you are right. So in M mode I can use front dial and ADJ lever for shutter and aperture, the new circular dial changes ISO when the ISO is set to auto, basically providing the same function as the exposure compensation did on the old camera in TAV mode. Phew!! Hey thanks for your answer mate, and for all your great videos. I always love your videos and learn a lot :)
Using the first user mode you setup, I feel like the snap focus isn't working with back button focussing. It seems to still be locked on the AF selection. - Do you know what might be up? Just to clarify if I explicitly set the focus mode to snap it is very sharp and in focus. Cheers
When you said that you would love Ricoh to let you shoot by touching your screen ... I think it does have it in that same screen you showed at 14:42 (AF Point + Focus + shoot )
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! It blew me away, also the fact that you have the other camera I’m comparing this to for my next purchase..the Fuji X100 series. Which would you recommend? I already own a Fuji X-H1 and I want a pocketable camera with great out of the camera jpegs..thank you!
Hard to decide for you. I find the out of camera JPEGs from the GRIII to be great for me. Fujifilm's JPEGS are almost identical sharp than the RAW file. With the GR the RAW file is always sharper.
@Samuel: i really do not get this snap focus topic and maybe you can explain it to me a little better. I have 2 scenarios. 1. i set AF to back FN button and exposure to shutter button: - so if i focus in infinity with back FN button and lock exposure with shutter button how do i then take a snap? Do I need to release AF back button and shutter button and quickly press (without half press) shutter button even if shutter button is set to Exposure lock only? 2. i set shutter button to AE+AF lock: I guess i need to release half press shutter button and quickly press it again (without half press)? Thanks!
@Samuel: i really can not get to work this snap focus / shot topic. What i would like to have is :- be able to autofocus and also do a quick snap when needed. How can i do this?
Thanks, vielen Danken! Really appreciated info and tips, mine has just arrived and after setting it all I just can't wait to use it in the sun tomorrow! Maybe one thing to remind people is that sometimes (like in my case) the camera was shipped with the 1.0 firmware, so I had it updated to the latest (1.11) before setting it up with your video. Cheers
Your sharing and teaching here is outstandingly perfect, clear, to the point, ..as it should be ! - but rarely found, open and generous. Thank You ! (and I dont even have a ricoh ! lol)
Yeah but only on combination with autofocus first right? I want to be able just take a photo without focusing first. But hopefully this can come in an update someday.
Yeah it does focus first and then it releases the shutter. I understand as I used to use back button/focus recompose but now I am getting used to composing and then tapping to where I want the focus. Thanks for the great videos!
That was an excellent video presentation. I know that I’m going to have to play it again several times to fully digest all of the content that you shared. Can you recommend any specific video which discusses how to update the firmware?
Hey glad to hear it was helpful to you! I have a video where I explain the firmware updating process here: ua-cam.com/users/liveAubEwjRBiJo?si=sRGkLBJnhCbrN3xd&t=2105
Many thanks, Samuel, for this very helpful video. As a new Ricoh GRIII user who has just got this beautiful camera, can't wait to get started. Just one question here. While i have been following you ever since researching my GRIII purchase and seeing most of your videos, am looking for some advice on a topic i haven't come across yet. Besides street photography, i also want to use the camera for general travel photography and i am taking this along on an upcoming trip. So wanted to know if the ND filter feature on the GRIII is good enough or do we need an ND filter (variable or solid) for travel and landscape photography? I know this is not the quintessential landscape etc. camera but i really want to work it as my main, if not only, equipment in a whole trip. Look forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks!
I recently got to know about the brand RICOH. A genuine question. Why is the GRII still appreciated and used in 2020. It is a 13 year old camera. What makes it special ? Thanks..

I love all your videos Samuel. As I continue my research for my first real camera and scour videos, I look forward to coming back and viewing something on your channel. Your videos are just so pleasant, professionally informative, and you do an excellent job with them as a whole. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment! That is very nice to hear! I appreciate it :) thanks for the support!
Glad it was helpful!
Somehow I bricked my camera and now I'll have to send in to to repair. Great job Ricoh! /s
How 🤔
@@BacaBaconi I have no idea. It crashed when I was changing the mode in the custom profiles. Next day camera appeared to work normally. Then two days later is was completely unresponsive so it's gone off for warranty repair
@@Erudite_Euro-Chav I’m sorry to hear that 😬
Thanks mate - just picked up my new Giii x this afternoon and after a couple of hours of watching your video and exploring the settings menus I feel I now everything I need to know to get going.
Hey Samuel, I've seen this video but for some reason missed the whole intro homage to my earlier videos.. ha ha, thanks, very funny. Click click!!
Hope you didn't mind! :D Big fan of your channel!
Nice! Happy to hear that! The X100T + GRIII is a great combo!
This is so comprehensive and detailed. You really help me to know my camera even I just got it today.
Thanks Peter!🙏🏻 good to hear you are enjoying your GR3x and you got something out of my video :) best wishes from Germany!
Wonderfully helpful for a new GR 3 user.
Thanks a lot for this Video. I have a GR-2, do you make also a video about your Setting Configuration for the GR-2?
also looking for this
Also interested in settings and configurations for GR II. I just picked up a used GR II and that would be extremely helpful.
Also interested for GR II. Good work ! I bought one for you and I like it so much, 🙏
Also interested for GR II.
That's how I shoot nowdays too! Bigger Camera around the neck, GR in my hand :)
Just got my GRIII, put all your settings in to mine. This helped a lot, thanks.
I've been using this camera for a while now, and I always get away with manual mode but leave the ISO in auto mode. I set the upper and lower limits to the same as Samuel. I then have control over the Aperture and shutter, and I push and pull each setting based on the light and what I am shooting.
thank you very much! I bought Gr3x because of you videos, and learnt how to use it from this video too!!
Wonderful. I just got my GRiii yesterday and this was abundantly helpful. I really loved your b-roll on the distance snap focus explanation!
Thanks a lot. Very useful. Ordered mine yesterday. Very excited
thank you for the effort and work.
Thank you Samuel
Very good for me, a new GR photographer.
Loving my GRiii, after just 3 days of using it!
And sincere thanks for the work you have already put into this.
i dont have a GRIII but i'm watching simply because i like your videos
Appreciate it Ray :)
Habe mir gerade die GRIII zugelegt - dafür meine XF10 verkauft. Bis gespannt. Deine Videos helfen. Danke dafür.
lately I entered to GR iii. Thank you very much. It's very useful.
WHAT A TONE OF USEFULL FEATURES IN THIS LITTLE GEM !
Thank you for that impressive description Samuel. I’m right new to the GR (Urban SE 🤩) though I will set up mine step by step according to your video. I’m wondering if there might a PDF to download? 😅 … cheers from my hood!!
It seemed like an amazing camera. How durable is it really? Great review
Just received my Ricoh Gr3. I’ve learnt a lot in this vid. Can’t wait to try this stealthy camera. Cheers!
Ohh, what a great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Perfect timing! My GRiii arrives tomorrow. Danke! Tchuss.
That is awesome! Congrats and enjoy the cam :)
Thanks bro, just got a GRIII and this was very useful to me. I am going to run with your settings for now and see where my style goes.
Maybe time for vid on GRIII gear? Just ordered JJC thumb rest (Amazon) & see that they also make a UV filter that sticks on lens. Any thoughts on this?
Just got my GRIII, this video was very helpful. Thank you for explaining and sharing your setup. Great video!
Thank you for your hard work on this excellent guide. I just got my GR3. This will be very helpful!
That is great! Happy to hear that
Great video. Lots of settings in this small camera. This helps.
Hi and thanks for the great videos. I found the work around to have full press snap focus and Fn button autofocus at the same time:
1. In Still shooting menu:
-'Focus' to Snap
-'Full Press Snap' to On
2. In Customize settings menu:
-'Shutter button setting' to AE Lock
-'FN Button Setting' -> 'Fn button' to Enable AF
-'FN Button Setting' -> 'Focus settings' to Select AF (or whatever apart from 'Same as shutter' or ' Snap')
This way you have the ability to autofocus with the FN button while retaining snap focus ability by full pressing the shutter.
Now this!! OMG!!
Don't freak out yet because TAV (Auto ISO) is available in an mode now. Just press on the ISO button and switch it to Auto :)
Cheers
Thanks for the video Samuel ! Just what I was looking for - someone to go through every menu item
Appreciate you !
This helped me a lot with my new Ricoh GRIII - thank you very much! Greetings from Vienna.
Excellent direction and information. Thanks Samuel.
No manual needed! Thanks for doing this!
You're welcome!
Thank you Lintaro. I'm a new user of GR3. it's really helpful!
Great video! New to GR iii, this helped quite a bit!
Your videos about de GR are my user manual. 😅 Thank you, you're doing a great job!
When you said that you would love Ricoh to let you shoot by touching your screen ... I think it does have it in that same screen you showed at 14:42 (AF Point + Focus + shoot )
yes because it was in an update 😉
Very helpful video. I’m new to GR iii. Thanks.
I’m shocked that this video even has dislikes. It’s fantastic. Great video man!
Is there a simple out of the box mode for initial point and shoot? Until one learns the full range of features? Also what is the user manual like? tks
Ordered mine today…it’s going to be a wild ride!
You are my hero! Just set up my freshly arrived GRiii. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Awesome! Glad to know my video was helpful to you!
Samuel L. Streetlife WOW, thanks for replying even after some time. Appreciate the feedback brotha.
@Samuel: i really do not get this snap focus topic and maybe you can explain it to me a little better.
I have 2 scenarios.
1. i set AF to back FN button and exposure to shutter button:
- so if i focus in infinity with back FN button and lock exposure with shutter button how do i then take a snap? Do I need to release AF back button and shutter button and quickly press (without half press) shutter button even if shutter button is set to Exposure lock only?
2. i set shutter button to AE+AF lock:
I guess i need to release half press shutter button and quickly press it again (without half press)?
Cheers
Good info! Thanks! Happy shooting :)
Your sharing and teaching here is outstandingly perfect, clear, to the point, ..as it should be ! - but rarely found, open and generous.
Thank You !
(and I dont even have a ricoh ! lol)
You can release the shutter using the touch screen. That is how I have mine set up. Works great.
I have a video where I explain the firmware updating process here: ua-cam.com/users/liveAubEwjRBiJo?si=sRGkLBJnhCbrN3xd&t=2105
wait, this video is even better! ua-cam.com/video/br6m_inHUS0/v-deo.htmlsi=HkcbIC_Dqsb75fDU&t=87 hope it helps :)
Thanks for rhe video Samuel🙏🏼 I get my Ricoh next week💪🏼
Thanks!
Hey Samuel, Thank you for this amazing tutorial. Very much appreciated 👍
Excellent tutorial. Given me the incentive to persevere with this camera. Thank you.
Wow, al lot information. Thank you very much.
Do I loose my settings if I update the Software?
I recently got to know about the brand RICOH. A genuine question. Why is the GRII still appreciated and used in 2020. It is a 13 year old camera. What makes it special ?
Thanks..
Newbie in the photography field and Ricoh GR IIIX is my very first compact camera and this video helped me A LOT. Kudos to u! 🧡🥹 I can have good pictures (with practice) now!
Thanks for this helpful video , can you share the settings of your snap mode (u2 in your video ) or made a video about this mode please ? I’ve seen so much ways to use it , I feel a little bit loss 😅
Excellent work ... Well Done!
