We went to the beach just a few times when I was young, but my best memories were what my mom called "mini vacations," we would drive to the next town over and go to the mall, eat at a Chinese restaurant, go to the movies, and then stay the night in a hotel so I could go swimming in the pool. I have good memories of those times and the fact that my mom tried to make my summers special even though we didn't have the money for big trips.😊

I was born in 1945 and lived in Northern California. My folks would take us to Alameda Beach, Santa Cruz, Pismo Beach and even the beach at PLAYLAND in San Francisco (COLD!). Saw 1957 Miss California beauty pageant in Santa Cruz. Loved the boardwalk in San Francisco. The rides, the games, the food ! Such great memories. Thanks mom and dad !

I grew up a stones throw from the beach and was a proud member of the surf lifesaving club. My dads father was a life guard, and in 1931 nearly drowned after his heroic efforts to save 2 drowning men. This was at a time when life guards only had a surf reel, a line and a belt to help them. The surf line got caught in a lot of seaweed and my grandfather had to drag many times his own weight. He was so exhausted he had to go back into shore on 3 seperate occasions. On the 3 time he was so bad he himself had to be worked on for an hour before being brought back to consciousness. Great video Rhett. ❤Jodie 🇦🇺

As a 50s kid I remember trips to the beach was quite convenient and often. It was less than an hour drive from where we lived. It wasn't the ocean but, next best thing to us, Lake Michigan and Indiana Dunes. You mentioned the motels and some hotels advertising they had TVs and AC in the rooms. I remember those glowing neon signs we would pass by at night. They made you feel cool just by seeing them. The motels then had window air conditioners because they had been built years before AC was a thing.
Sunburns on top of sunburns. I am fair skin and would fry every summer. Never tanned once. Just turned crispy red then fade back to white. I'm sorry now that there was no sun screen at the time.
    Thanks for the memories Rhetty.

Born in 64 on Florida's panhandle beaches and back then one could drive on the beaches and dunes.. Bonfires and parties weren't uncommon up until the latter 70s when they outlawed both and broke up parties... But we did have some fun as young teens messing with the old guy at the toll booth at night, messing with the tourists and chasing all of the here for a few days girls... Had a lot of good times when all of the adults got the families together at one beach house,or another,an rv set up in one of the soundside parking lots where kids could wade out 100 yards without fear of drowning in the calm clear waters... Someone always brought a boat around and we all took turns skiing, diving off of it in deep water, fishing, snorkeling etc... Those were the best evenings running wild, eating fresh off the grille hot digs, burgers, freshly caught seafood, fried chicken, melons, and chasing one another around the dunes in the dark !!! 😁 fun times for everyone then...

One of the best beaches in Northern California(in terms of size and scenery)is Baker Beach in San Francisco. The flaws:
    1) Being San Francisco, the weather/water is often too cold(not a problem for me, but, for some, a problem)
    2) Part of the beach is a nude beach...YMMV as to whether or not this is a problem

We lived close enough in San Jose that the Santa Cruz Beach was only about a 40 minute drive over the range to get there so we didn't stay there. But in the early 70s my aunt and grandmother rented a seaside motel in nearby Capitola and invited my dad's sister's family from Salinas CA one weekend and mine another time. Hey Rhett!! Remember me?? Sorry I haven't been very diligent in keeping up with these wonderful videos, but there are many that I can't relate to. Like any from the 80s on.
But this one brings back memories.
We never made it to any ocean beach, but we were in Utah and had the Great Salt Lake Beach to hit during the summers.
I remember when I was about 2 or 3, we went in our 1953 white over baby blue Chevy to Salt Aire at Great Salt Lake.
I remember my mom in her late 40s swimsuit and dad in his to the knees trunks!
I was in a diaper, and my older brothers were in trunks.
We had a blast in those days!
I also had to wear a T-shirt because I burned so easily.

I remember Mom and Dad taking my sister and me in the late 50s to Colonial Beach on the Chesapeake Bay. It was a lot of fun. I would get in the shallow water with Dad. We built sand castles etc.
We did it through the early 1970s the only problem was Jelly fish that got through the net. On one trip i saw my first shark! It was behind a head boat we were on.

Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories! Have you ever been stung by a jellyfish? I know the Chesapeake Bay can get quite a few in there. I've been stung by them several times but fortunately it was never all that bad. I have seen some people that looked like they got in a full nest of them.

@@RhettyforHistory I got stung a few times when they got through the nets. Only once when I was a teenager was it painful. Everybody looked so healthy back then! I didn't see one overweight person. Our food supply used to be so much healthier 80 years ago and this video proves the toll that over processed and chemical laden "food" takes on our bodies. This, and being stuck behind a computer all day is bad for not only our physical health, its bad for our mental health as well. Our modern society is so messed up now. Im jit even sure we can fix it anymore.

Most of these images are way earlier than when I was born so I can't relate But my mother And father can, however, one thing in this video. That sticks out is the non-alcoholic drink. You mentioned involving cherry syrup. We called it a Shirley Temple.
But my memories. Of drinking it are not on the beach but instead in the 1980s, in American Chinese restaurants. My parents would always order me a Shirley Temple. To go with the Poo poo platter. Yes, that's actually what it was named a Poo poo platter. Those that know what I'm talking about. Know what I'm talking about.😂
