A friend of mine noticed a sketchy guy at a gas station one night. The guys started heading in his direction until my friend made eye contact with him and put his hand in his jacket pocket. He did not have his firearm, but he acted like he was staging a firearm in his jacket pocket and the guy turned away from him. Sometimes even just being aware can help you avoid trouble.
Wow, that's crazy! Could have probably gone really bad had the sketchy guy not noticed that or cared!

Function over fashion is an old school way of thinking that, in my opinion, needs to come back. So many men (and women for that matter) are worried about how they look vs actually being able to function in life that it deters them from being able to do menial tasks. Watched a guy in skinny jeans the other day try to pick up the keys hey dropped in Walmart….funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time😂
As a fellow veteran, I use a similar “Denny’s” scenario as a teaching tool also. Simple rule, people start getting loud and aggressive, and you don’t know the people involved, it’s time to go. Also scan the entire area before moving, just in case the loud interaction was being used as a distraction for some other action.

Good Stuff Mike ! Keep dropping knowledge! I’m 6’4” and 290 and have always carried a full size pistol even with shorts and a T shirt for more then 20 plus years ! Full size firing grip at all times for me
Fellow Sasquatch here. Same with the full-size! It’s incredible the objective difference running, really running, a full-size gun compared to a compact or smaller for me.
I choose massive capability gain over a slight gain in comfort. That said, as an instructor in this space I absolutely advocate for people finding the firearm with the right fit to enhance their capability 😉
I am envious, seriously. I am 5'7". If I carry a service size gun, it looks like I am hiding a toaster. Rock on.
Im 5'9" 180 I can get away with carrying a full size pistol all year round.

I used to carry a 1911 during winter but just continued to use Sig P365 XL. It just makes sense for comfort and capacity. I’m not going to miss the caliber. SD 9mm shows ballistics that equal 45ACP too so that was a selling point to me. The whole stopping power isn’t as real as some would like to think.

I have only seen one jacket with pockets like that ever and it was a long raincoat that was handed down to me from my uncle I was wondering why the hell there were open slots in the pockets like that thought it was stupid, but thanks to this video, now I know what they are for. I will be wearing that jacket even more now.

Nothing wrong with pre-engagement preparation on the possibility that you may need it.

I order the vertx hoodie for the same reason especially when I’m driving. I carry a full-size M&p with an rmr and I personally like to have it staged to draw if needed. Definitely like the tips that you give about edc. Realistic

Timely video for me as I was just in MI visiting family.
You should mention also, (in a dennys type scenario) to utilize the other guys around you. You don’t have to go solo. Make eye contact with other capable people around you. For instance, I took my family out for lunch today and made eye contact and smiled with the other dads around me. Just a simple nod when shit goes down can cue up a team willing to protect those around you with no verbal communication.

Mike, this advice is spot on!! In the winter, my P220 and 1911 are in my rotation. In the spring and fall, my P365XL is my go to gun. For summer, my P938 is my go to gun. Texas summers are no joke
Great video and I've always been the type of person always watching and aware of my surroundings. I live in a very very warm climate with sunshine over 300 days a year. Summertime in PHX is brutal. I've been using a Vertex sling bag with a kydex velcro holster with my G 19 and two spare mags. Very easy to stage or get to easily. Spent as much for the bag and holster as my Glock. Keep making great videos.

Good points. Yup I have big hands, compact frames don't give me the confidence I need. Sig's x-carry grip fits me best and still accepts fullsize or compact slides. Best of both world in my use case.
I carry the G45 iwb ,zt0350,Bic lighter, spear mag,tourniquet, wallet, soe belt ,flash light,and a tdi fixed blade year round. I don't change anything based on Weather.
I thought I was the only one who has ever thought of this, but of course not. Thanks for sharing this knowledge and in will be sure to check out this jacket.

Hey Mike, I officially qualified as an old guy this year, no not that year, add ten. This is great teaching. I've been shooting, reloading, casting my target ammo for somewhere around four decades. I've never had the budget to have a multiple choice EDC so dressing for carry has been paramount. Theses days I have more options, still dressing for carry. I recently subscribed as I recognize good protocols when I seen them, (okay, except for the Glock fan-boy stuff). Yes, I'd surely not turn one down, just never have owned one though have shot a few. I like 'em, not the grip angle. I'm good with what I have. Keep it coming and thanks.

You have taught me so much through out the years on UA-cam. I’m not one to buy online courses but I’d love to do some one on ones with you in Austin . . I’ve had multiple dealings with guys, on their time , 6 days after moving into our new duplex in Pflugerville I got punched in the back of the head while cutting some wood for a shelf I was building . Thank God the cops weren’t having a bad day bc I didn’t get arrested. I sleep with a Glock 45x under my pillow (it’s a 17,19 mix) fantastic gun. I hate having to live like this but bc I do have to live this way, it would be awesome to get some real training from a pro.

Here is one for you - jacket waistband drawstring plastic clamps that “tink/click” on a hard kydex OWB holster. Cut them out or glue felt onto them. 👍

I had an encounter where the dude was twice my size. I was like a small dog barking. I knew that if this guy gets working on me the only thing I could do is poke him with my knife. I remember him saying something about don't interfere with me disciplining my daughter. It was the punch to her neck that sent me into sheepdog mode. He was later detained as I stayed on the phone with 911 as they pursued him.

Good tips. Like most I have a drawer full of holsters that didn't make the cut for real life situations.
Like the holster, and jacket.
Really love this kind of discussion. I've always struggled with deep winter carry options. Right now, the normal temperatures are lows at night in the negatives (-5F) to during the day as a high as (20F). You need to wear gloves when out, so how do you handle those scenarios effectively? Drop the gloves and use hand warmers and hands in pockets?
I can carry shoulder holster under the coat, IWB or even OWB - not even a problem, there. It is more of how to deal, especially if there is potential of needing to respond quickly with the need to wear gloves to protect yourself from the elements.
Just my idea from working in the cold. Loose fitting mittens(nice ones maybe rabbit) kids clips to keep them on you so you can slap em off and go to work and pop em back on before your hands are cold
@@memyselfandi985 Absolutely agree on the need for additional training any time the "normal" changes.
I'm thinking that now, if possible, I'd run hands in pockets with warmers and only have the gloves on when essential, like shoveling snow, scraping the car or the like.

@@gerardocerecedes7002 That is also a great idea and very minimal. As @memyselfandI mentioned, going to have to do some additional reps to figure out the best way to keep these the gloves out of the way while drawing and coming up on target.

Tear the mitts off. Clear the clothing.
Find good gloves that you can operate your weapon properly while wearing and get some training with gloves in because that’s a whole other learning curve adding gloves to the mix.
Never heard the term “self offensive” before but I like the thought process of it. I’ve always taken training towards the DEFENSIVE side .

1 thing that always stuck with me as that if i am carrying, every fight i get in there is a gun involved. I always try to consider space from conflict so i can try to keep a fist fight from turning into a shooting.

I went from a full-size 1911 10mm, to a Sig P365, now I carry the Glock 43X, I prefer the Glock because of my hand size and the full grip with the compact slide. And it fits with the clothes I wear in the summer along with winter. I agree 100% clothing matters. I tend to wear more form fitting clothes, t-shirts, flannels that are form fitting, and even more form fitting hoodies, with the Glock, I feel I still get the full size feel with NO imprint. Great videos.
In my younger days when I could only afford a few guns, I carried a 1911 on and off duty. I still carry one when I can (with how I’m dressed).
In the spring:summer in PA I appendix carry a glock 19. During the fall/winter I carry a glock 22 (which was my service weapon) or a S&W M&P full sized .40 at 9 o’clock because I’m a lefty.

This has been covered a long time ago and practiced for many years by me in New England and Alaska:
1 Have either pea coat, duffle coat, m65 etc--some clothing with body firmness not fleece
2 Have revolver in the coat pocket
3 In dynamic threat---put hand in pocket for staging
4 Great thing with revolver is shoot through pocket
5 Still have your standard carry pistol buried under the layers
Use my IWB for my G43 everyday, its awesome!!

Mike, a big THANK YOU for the educational posts. This was very useful. I think people get lost with the gun and doesn't zero into the platform. I like Kyle Lamb's comment that a subcompact is a 1/2 of a gun.

Greenville. M18 w/TLR7a for 12/12 months.
During summer i carry a SigSauer P320 compact. Winter I carry my full size SigSauer P320 set up just like my duty carry all with Holosun 509T
I've carried a full size vp9 at 3oclock with no problem in the summer
