It can move slightly. Make sure you try to line the direction of pull up with the tension head as best as possible, and keep your hand or forearm or something on the racquet as you pull tension. This will help to eliminate most of the wobble. I am assuming that when you pull tension you are not touching the racquet at all and it has a fairly extreme wobble as tension is pulled. Dude! Great video. This helped me a lot. I'm thinking of starting a small hobby stringing business. Looking at the Gamma Progression II 602fc. You think that would be a good buy? And do you think I should get a starting clamp?

I think everyone should get a starting clamp, but they are not necessary. If you get a little business going reach out and I will share what I have. Where to buy string, supplies, databases, etc.

One piece and two piece refers to the number of stings used to string a racquet. One piece you use one 40 foot piece of string to string the whole racquet. Two piece you use two 20 foot pieces. Around the world is a method of stringing one piece that allows you to always string the crosses from the top down.

I'm wondering if you have used the cleaning stone for the clamps. I just got them and there are no instructions. Do I just rub them inside the clamps back and forth? It may be a stupid question because I could not find anything on Google!
I have never used them. I believe they are used for metal clamps. Not sure I would use them on anything diamond dusted. You just rub them on the clamp surface until you see clean metal.
@@HerbBaird The manual says that the cleaning stones work well for the diamond coating string clamping surface but I was thinking the same as you and did not want to risk damage if I use them the wrong way. Ill email and call gamma. Thanks
@@HerbBaird I just spoke with John, the stringing expert at Gamma, He said I have 3 options and when he wants a real deep cleaning he does all 3. First is file the sharpening stone in between the teeth of the clamp jaws for around 10 seconds. It WON'T hurt the diamond coating in any way. You don't have to take the clamp apart but you can for easier access for steps 2 and 3. Step 2 is to spray WD-40 on a toothbrush and even on the clamp (where it would grip the string) and brush it for 10-20 seconds. Step 3 is put dish soap on a toothbrush and scrub the clamps for 10-20 seconds and then rinse with water. He said either one of the steps would work on it's own as well but If you want a "deep" cleaning you can do all 3. P.S He did say alcohol works just like WD-40 so that's good also.
Is the starting clamp actually necessary? I bought one myself but when I've strung without it and also played with the racket, the strings seemed fine to me.
I'm not sure if you have covered this but I just learned it today. If you want the machine to stop beeping every time you press the buttons you can turn it off. When you turn on the machine at start up and it starts counting down from 99 to 00 you just need to press and hold the Enter button for a few seconds. Repeat the same steps if you want to turn the beeps back on. FYI If you silence the machine it will still beep if the machine starts operating incorrectly to let you know there is a problem.
@@HerbBaird Interesting, I like it off if I string early in the morning and don't want to disturb anyone. Its nice to have the option! I can see wanting the sounds also. I was so used to it that it was strange at first when I silenced it.
Without the sound I find myself having to watch the machine more, and I hesitate my movements. With sound as soon as it beeps I move. It is not much, but I do save a few seconds per racquet with the sound on.
How much more string do you need in this over a linear electronic machine? Also, do you prefer this to your Wilson baiardo machine, what are the main differences in your opinion?
Great videos! I'm so confused about the string pattern of my Yonex Dr 100. The website says to tie the cross at 11B which makes no sense. I look at the string jobs on my racquets from different shops and they all did differently. Looks like you have the Crosses at 7T - 9B, is that correct? I just got an X-ELS and still learning. How do you poke at the end? Do you hit in between the strings or on the strings? What does it do? Also, I'm still waiting on my starting clamp but what's the best way to do without it? Thank you!
I will not say that 7 and 9 are correct, but I will say that is where I tie off. ua-cam.com/video/XE9y5AeX2sQ/v-deo.html at about the 20 minute mark I talk about using the setting off awl. It is used to help straighten the strings without hurting your fingers. Without a starting clamp best way is probably one peice, or use a starting knot with 2 peice.
Hi Mr Baird, I've always used Wilson baiardo and I don't know how could I work with Gamma cause it's not linear, what about you experience? Do you think there's a lost of time unlocking clamp in the top and bottom? Last question, do you know the quality of Pro's Pro MT400? Thank you very much
I do not have experience with the Pros Pro, so can't help you there. The transition from the Baiardo to the Gamma is not that bad. It adds less than a minute a racquet using the manual clamps. After a few racquets muscle memory will take over.
Hard to tell without watching you string a racquet. Do not worry about it to much. Too many people stress over the tension on the tie off strings. They should not be hitting the ball there anyway. If they do regularly hit the ball where the tie offs are then they have bigger issues than the loss of a few pounds of tension. Just use the knot button, make sure your clamps are not slipping, and you will be fine.
I believe what you are asking to show how to set the machine up for badminton? I will do a video later this week to show how the 2 machines are set for badminton racquets.
Hey quick question, is the gamma rotational gripper okay for stringing natural gut? Will it deform the gut? I'm deciding on buying this or something with the head Wise 2086 because it pulls linear. Thanks!
I use the same machine and when i'm pulling tension the racquet seems to move? Im finding it tough to mount and stay in the same place.. any help? Also what do i do at the start if i dont have a floating clamp? Thanks mate
Second question first. If you do not have a starting clamp you can tie a starting knot, or string the racquet one piece instead of two. I do not like stringing one piece just because I hate messing with such a long piece of string. If you tie a starting knot weave the first three crosses and pull tension on the second one first. Do not pull tension directly on the first cross as it will put stress on the grommet with the knot. Not sure what to tell you about the racquet moving. As you pull tension racquet will flex a little and distort a small amount, but they should not move. Make sure the supports are snug but not so tight they warp the racquet. I would have to see how you have the racquet mounted to really diagnose what is happening.
@@HerbBaird I have sorted the racquet not moving and will start trying with the starting knot (i agree 1 piece gets too messy). One last question, just sometimes on the first tension I pull, the string has sometimes slipped away from the clamp. Is this just because the string wasn't tight enough in the string or is their another way to make sure this doesn't happen? Thanks
@@JenkinsTennis687 if the string is slipping in the clamp then yes it is too loose and you will need to tighten it. Be careful and do not tighten so much that you damage the string. My advise is to invest in a starting clamp. Once you start using one you will wonder how you strung without it. You use it to back up the clamp, start your crosses, tie knots. They are not required but make stringing much easier. Also, make sure you keep your clamps clean. As they get dirty string will slip more easily in them.
Hi another question. Have you ever had the problem on the progression 2 that if you pull tension on one side of the racket (cross strings) that the other side leaves the racket mount? If yes how did you fixed it?
It sounds like maybe you did not ha e the supports adjusted tight enough when you began. As you pull the mains it will compress the racquet, and crosses will elongate it back. If the supports are not tight enough as you pull mains it can push the supports out slightly leaving a gap when you pull crosses. Just make sure all 6 supports are properly adjusted and the problem should work itself out.
I would say personal preference. If a rotational gripper is fine get the ELS. If you just want a linear gripper, get the wise. Both are going to do the same job.
@@pontus7802 Hi, did you end up going with this combo? I'm in the market now and trying to decide between just getting the ELS or going with your proposed setup with the Wise. Looks like it would save about $200-300 with the wise and get a linear puller
The top of the clamp (part that holds the string) is adjusted using the round adjustment wheel opposite the lever. The base is adjusted using a tool that comes with the machine. It looks like a socket (metal tube) that fits in a hole on the bottom of the stringing deck. Line the clamp up with the hole and insert the socket. Use can use a screwdriver or awl as a handle placing it through the holes in the socket. I will try and do a short video and post on how to adjust.
It turns until it reaches tension. The string in the video is a stiff poly that does not have much stretch. If using a multifilament, natural gut, etc. it would rotate more to accommodate for the stretch of the string. You want the string from the racquet to the tension head as straight as possible so the machine is pulling as little as possible.
RPM should not have that much stretch. sounds like maybe the string is slipping through either the clamps, or puller. I would start out by cleaning everything. clean the clamps and puller head. I am not saying do it, but I take my clamps apart, and have taken the puller head apart to clean before. If your puller head is turning that far on RPM I have to assume the string is slipping somewhere. Make sure your clamps are adjusted properly also.
Herb Baird I think I have my Problem I put the string in the back of the tension head and there is no grip I thought the grip goes all the way to the back! Did you knew that?
You really do not need anything. It will have all of the tools that you need. Things I would upgrade over time, an awl- i do not like the long super sharp awl that comes with the machine. I like the ones that are shorter without such a fine tip. Bent nose pliers - I have big hands and struggle with the time pliers included. Starting clamp - the gamma clamp will work fine, it has glues in clamp plates that can come out. Stand - makes stringing much easier.
I have just to mess around with it. Don't like it, would never use it for any practical purpose. Too many variables that it does not take into account for it to be accurate. Type of machine, speed of stringer, pull speed of stringing machine, etc.
Very nice video Herb. Very efficient. I was wondering, do you always use 2 strings of 20 feet, regardless of the stringing pattern ? Also, when pulling to the correct tension, my string is not straight for some reasons, eventhough i pull the string in the tension straight, any advices ? thanks
No, I do not always pull 20 ft. I make adjustments based on pattern and head size. I know for 18 mains to add about 18 inches or so, and so forth. I assume you are talking about crosses not being straight? Several variables could be at work. When pulling tension push the string lightly with your fingers against the previous string and allow them to straighten as tension is pulled. When doing this some multi's will stick and not straighten completely, some dense patterns will still try to curve back down. The goal is with experience you will get them as straight as possible while stringing.
Yes i was talking about the crosses. So basically for a 18x20..for the main(18) you would have like 21.5 ft ? What about for the crosses(20)? Thanks for that herb. I will definitely try that.
For the most part I always use the same length in the crosses unless it is shorter. Say a 14 or 16 cross racquet. I will use a 2 feet less. About 21.5 to 22 feet for an 18 main. Depends on head size, but 21.5 should work in most. May have to use a jumper, but that is no big deal
Butt cap up is a reference to the logo on the butt cap. For example the W on a Wilson racquet. When I mount I make sure the W is a W and not an M. You do not have to mount with the logo up, I do it so that every racquet is mounted the same. There are some racquets (i.e. Babolat Pure Aero) that are required to be strung with the crosses starting at a certain hole for the string to lie in the grommet groves. By always mounting all racquets the same way I do not have to worry about what side to start on, I always start the same.
Hi Mr. Baird, I like your video! This is really helpful. I was wondering if this machine can string badminton rackets as well. If yes, is there anything special that I need to pay attention to, please?
I negotiated a rate with my local university which is below what I charge everyone else. For this I also get all visiting schools, ITA, NCAA, and ITF tournaments. For all of them I charge $20 per racquet. For visiting schools I average 5 per school, and average 22 schools per year. Tournaments range from 40 to 200 in a week.

Thanks for sharing.
Is the starting clamp actually necessary? I bought one myself but when I've strung without it and also played with the racket, the strings seemed fine to me.
No, a starting knot will do the same thing. I just do not like to use starting knots. They put a lot of stress on the grommet.
I had turned the sound off on this and my Baiardo machines, but I found that the beeps help so I turned them back on.
You need about an extra foot of string. I prefer the Baiardo, but it is also $4500 more expensive. Main differences, clamps, bases, puller, motors.
@@HerbBaird thank you for your reply
Is it possible to adjust your clamp pressure? Because i m gonna buy machine for badminton not tennis
Yes. The clamps are fully adjustable. The machine comes with all adapters for badminton.
Hey herb just bought one. When I go to tension the racquet the turn table seems to swivel. Does your do that? If so how do you stop it?
Yes, I always put my hand, arm, etc to keep it from swinging back and forth.
Thanks!! And when you string the crosses how do you keep it from moving so much lol
As far as the turn table as you are weaving
As you weave the turntable will move some. If you want it to stay steady you can use the table brake.
I keep losing tension on the last cross at the bottom. What do I make wrong?
Hard to tell without watching you string a racquet. Do not worry about it to much. Too many people stress over the tension on the tie off strings. They should not be hitting the ball there anyway. If they do regularly hit the ball where the tie offs are then they have bigger issues than the loss of a few pounds of tension. Just use the knot button, make sure your clamps are not slipping, and you will be fine.
Hi, Herb! Thanks so much for your video! What racket stringing machine would you recommend for a college team with a budget of $2,000?

If you have a moment to send some suggestions. Thank you.

Pilzz badminton tennis clamp setting
I believe what you are asking to show how to set the machine up for badminton? I will do a video later this week to show how the 2 machines are set for badminton racquets.
Thank you
I can do strinnig like you have your machine there
Hey quick question, is the gamma rotational gripper okay for stringing natural gut? Will it deform the gut? I'm deciding on buying this or something with the head Wise 2086 because it pulls linear. Thanks!
It is no harder on gut than the linear gripper on my Baiardo.
Where the clamps move does it scratch the surface?
You get some minot surface scratches, but a thin coat of oil when you do your cleanings will eliminate most if that.
Thank You for the quick reply! Is there a specific brand you use?
I use Tri Flow, but any bicycle chain oil will work
Hi another question.
Herb Baird ok the problem is I am always scared with deforming the racket sometimes the mount is to tight and sometimes to loose during the stringing.
It takes a little experience, but you will find the sweet spot.
Do you recommend getting the ELS or getting the ST II with a wise 2086? Or it shouldnt matter ?
I would say personal preference. If a rotational gripper is fine get the ELS. If you just want a linear gripper, get the wise. Both are going to do the same job.
Herb Baird thank you, I saw a good deal on the Progression II 602 FC Pro, would it be a good combination togheter with the 2086 do you think?
Yes, the wise is an awesome attachment
@@pontus7802 Hi, did you end up going with this combo? I'm in the market now and trying to decide between just getting the ELS or going with your proposed setup with the Wise. Looks like it would save about $200-300 with the wise and get a linear puller
Today I got my Gamma Progression 2 and I was wandering if the pressure of the clamps is right. Can you set up the clamps tieder?
Yes, the clamps are adjustable. The clamp base can be adjusted from underneath.
Herb Baird how?
The top of the clamp (part that holds the string) is adjusted using the round adjustment wheel opposite the lever. The base is adjusted using a tool that comes with the machine. It looks like a socket (metal tube) that fits in a hole on the bottom of the stringing deck. Line the clamp up with the hole and insert the socket. Use can use a screwdriver or awl as a handle placing it through the holes in the socket. I will try and do a short video and post on how to adjust.
I posted a short video today on clamp adjustment
are those Solenco Hyper G strings?
Yes
Hi why isn’t your tension head turning more? Can you set it up?
It turns until it reaches tension. The string in the video is a stiff poly that does not have much stretch. If using a multifilament, natural gut, etc. it would rotate more to accommodate for the stretch of the string. You want the string from the racquet to the tension head as straight as possible so the machine is pulling as little as possible.
Herb Baird ok I am playing with the Rmp blast and when I am stringing with 53 pounds the tension head makes a half rotation!
Thanks
RPM should not have that much stretch. sounds like maybe the string is slipping through either the clamps, or puller. I would start out by cleaning everything. clean the clamps and puller head. I am not saying do it, but I take my clamps apart, and have taken the puller head apart to clean before. If your puller head is turning that far on RPM I have to assume the string is slipping somewhere. Make sure your clamps are adjusted properly also.
Herb Baird ok thanks
Herb Baird I think I have my Problem I put the string in the back of the tension head and there is no grip I thought the grip goes all the way to the back! Did you knew that?
What would you say what do I need when I buy a Gamma Progression Els 2 which equipment?
And what do you need for calibrating the machine?
You really do not need anything. It will have all of the tools that you need. Things I would upgrade over time, an awl- i do not like the long super sharp awl that comes with the machine. I like the ones that are shorter without such a fine tip. Bent nose pliers - I have big hands and struggle with the time pliers included. Starting clamp - the gamma clamp will work fine, it has glues in clamp plates that can come out. Stand - makes stringing much easier.
@@HerbBaird and which calibrating machine do yyou use?
I use the Wise electronic tension calibrator. It is the best on the market but fairly expensive
Have you used the RaquetTune app? If so, how accurate is it?
I have just to mess around with it. Don't like it, would never use it for any practical purpose. Too many variables that it does not take into account for it to be accurate. Type of machine, speed of stringer, pull speed of stringing machine, etc.
@@HerbBaird Does it come close if you've put in the correct string size and racquet size?
Still depends. What phone are you're using, what you use to tap the string, how fast you string.
@@HerbBaird Using an IPhone. Tapping with back of a screwdriver about 2x per second.
What does butt cap up mean and why should it be mounted that way?
Yes, it comes with adapters for doing badminton racquets. Just use the adapters and you should be fine.
@@HerbBaird thank you so much for your response! I will try it out.
I also string for ncaas how much do you usually charge the school for labor per racket?
I negotiated a rate with my local university which is below what I charge everyone else. For this I also get all visiting schools, ITA, NCAA, and ITF tournaments. For all of them I charge $20 per racquet. For visiting schools I average 5 per school, and average 22 schools per year. Tournaments range from 40 to 200 in a week.
Do u use the parnell knot for all the knots?
Yes.
@@HerbBaird thanks. I have the same machine
Your video was very helpful
Thank you
Hey Herb how hard do you crank down the clamps?? Do you have to crank them really hard or just slightly for them not to move?? Thanks.
Not that hard. You will develop a feel for what is right
Good video.
you are agreat string, not really explaining much about technique, thx
There are hundreds of videos that already talk about technique, so I try to focus more on a few tips and tricks.
a tripod is what you really need. But thanks though.
I have some videos using a tripod, but some people prefer a view that sees what I see, knows where I am looking during each step.
