  • Captain Greg McCoy piloting the Sensation experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows during Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament this weekend. McCoy and crew landed a 619.4 pound blue marlin during the Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament Saturday after a six hour battle that lasted into the night. Upon arrival at the dock a crowd cheered as the largest blue marlin of the tournament was hoisted onto the scales.
The glory was short lived as it was made clear that the weight was under review due to a possible "Rule 23 violation." In the end, the crew ended up losing over $3 million dollars because the blue marlin had been bitten by a shark and may have been dead before it was landed. If you're wondering why was the fisherman disqualified from the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, we go into depth in this podcast.
The Big Rock tournament is always exciting, and sometimes filled with fishing drama, and this year was no different. The story was huge, and Fox News interviewed the own of the Sensation. The fishing crew missed out on $3 million prize after 619-pound blue marlin disqualified because of ‘mutilation’.
By Sunday, the tournament director announced it had consulted with fisheries experts and the Sensation’s blue marlin would have to be disqualified.
“After careful deliberation and discussions between the Big Rock Rules Committee and Board of Directors with biologists from both NC State CMAST and NC Marine Fisheries biologists as well as an IGFA official, it was determined that SENSATION’S 619.4-lb Blue Marlin would be disqualified due to mutilation caused by a marine animal. It was determined that the fish was mutilated before it was boated and therefore it was disqualified,” the tournament director added.
“This decision is consistent with prior decisions made by the tournament in similar circumstances over the last 65 years,” the tournament director said.
Sensation would have won $3.5 million for the catch, including over $700,000 for the first boat to catch a marlin weighing over 500 pounds.

to clarify the first boat to bring in a 500 pound or better marlin wins the bonus money of over 700 thousand dollars. since no boat won the bonus it rolls over to next year and the first boat to bring in a marlin over 500 pounds wins over 1.5 million dollars.

Something to note on the "rich people" thing: the Sensation team sold shares on the team, about 35 of them. Anyone competing with the crew had to buy a share, each worth about $102k if that fish hadn't been disqualified. I know several of the guys fishing on that team were just regular blue-collar dudes that stood to win life-changing money from that fish.

….and there are guys in single engine outboards that enter a single division for $2500.
But, when much of the fleet is comprised of million dollar boats, some $10 million plus, and Michael Jordan flies in on his private jet to fish, its really honestly a rich man’s game.

no whats even crazier is that they even said that if the fish is damaged beyond control AFTER you catch it then its still a legal fish to weigh in. so in other works cut the fish in half and yes you can weigh that fish but a fish bite not a chance. this rule makes people move away from supporting tournaments like this and they keep trying to make it harder every year. the big rock had a lot of people mad when they cut the live feed. little did they know that the local news was live streaming and they left theirs up so everyone could watch what happens.

Yep went to lawsuit. Was announced earlier. I don't think it will hold up. Rules are pretty well written. This is pretty silly when an "act of God" makes the fish easier to boat, but the rules don't allow for that. Sure, they don't want competitors doing something like shooting a fish to make it easier to boat, but that's a deliberate, man made event, with a set objective. Unless they can show how the folks in the boat caused the shark to strike the fish, or how they caused the fish to get a tail wrap and expire..., this should be a court victory for the boat, not the Association. There's so many options to catch & release smaller fish and target other species. 🤔... when a dolphin can net a boat 400,000 plus dollars.. it kinda gives boats other options to make money I guess. The rule in question does focus on mutilation but has nothing to do with altering the weight of a fish. And the standard has to be set for all shark bites. All though this fish maybe didn’t die from its injuries. It has to be judged fairly because of tournaments goin forward. More research needs to be done
