Today's episode marks the end of the 5 parts Jabalpur food series. It is a comparatively short food experience featuring simple home cooked dishes, a popular Veg thali, New York style pizza and some brilliant desi ghee sweets.
We started the day by visiting one of our acquaintances' places for a traditional breakfast. Over a delightful spread of veg cutlet, chane ke pakode, poha and jalebi, our host SM Lal ji and his spouse Veena Ji enlightened us about the some significant aspects of this city which is supposedly named after the Sankrit word 'jabal' meaning hard rock. During British rule it developed into a cantonment and finally evolved into a key army base with ordinance and army vehicle manufacturing factories. Unlike other Indian states where the high court is situated in the capital city, in Madhya Pradesh the high court is situated not in the capital city of Bhopal but here. Hence it is a major administrative center.
From there we went to our chief host Shubhi's home to relish a Sunday special breakfast which is mostly chane ki bhaji ki poori and aalu chane ki sabzi combo. This chickpea greens based puri is one of Shubhi's favourite dishes too and hence we were excited to try it. Her mom shared this family recipe and also some memories related to it. The flavours were mild yet very hearty. This was followed by a thick and creamy kheer which almost resembles a rabri.
Next we reached Rajwada restaurant along with Shubhi and her mom in order to try their popular veg thali. It is a colourful and attractive conglomeration of various Rajasthani, Gujarti and Unjabi dishes like paneer rajwada, gatte ki sabzi, gobhi matar, aalu tamatar, Amritsari chole, Gujrati dal, dahi vade, dhokla, tandoori roti, multigrain roti, bhakti naan, makhane ki kheer, mango halwa, dal bati, khichdi, veg biryani etc. At a pocket friendly price of Rs. 350, it is not an outstanding but a good experience.
After this thali we visited the New Yorker Cafe to try their much famous pizza. Started by a young Chef Shubhansh, this place is designed after his favourite city New York, where he aspires to own a restaurant. Hence the interiors had the images of the streets, buildings and major attractions from this megacity. At his recommendation, we tried the Quattro Formaggi pizza. Shubhansh patiently took us through the fascinating making process of this crust handmade pizza which has a topping of four different cheeses namely mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan, and bocconcini. Shubhansh's expertise can be gauged from the balanced use of cheeses. Tkos was followed by a refreshing Irish coffee made with Irish whiskey extract, black coffee and whipped cream.
Next we visited the Kachnar Shiva Temple which houses a huge statue of Lord Shiva under the open-sky on the cavern which has the replicas of the 12 Jyotirlinga from different parts of the country. It was quite a grand experience.
The last stop of this tour was the legendary sweet shop named Baderia Mishthan Bhandar that is renowned for their pure desi ghee sweets and namkeen. It's legendary because it was established by freedom fighter Shyam Sunder Baderia Ji in 1932 which is the pre Independence era. Here we met Parul ji who is his granddaughter in law. Both Shyam Ji's son and grandson are doctors hence this shop is run by the female members of the house. But during festival time, the whole family comes together to cater to the huge demand. We also got to know about Shyam Ji's association with the erstwhile Congress party and their leaders. Some of their famous sweets are the Motichoor ke ladoo, doodh ki burfi magaj ke ladoo. moong dal ka halwa, kunde ke pede, malai ki barfi and gulab jamum. They also make falhari namkeens from water chestnut flour. Here we tried the motichoor ke ladoo, milk cake and saloni and everything taste rich and brilliant. The taste of desi ghee was quite pronounced. Shyam Ji had vowed that he will never use any other alternative than desi ghee and that's what has kept the legacy alive. we were so enamoured by the taste of the colour and essence free motichoor ke ladoo and milk cake that we got some packed for Delhi.

The conversation over the tasty n nutritious breakfast,... the rajasthani thali,... the explanation n making of the Italian pizza,... n the details shared at the last shop,.... it all felt genuine...
The thali specially, is supposed to contain a bigger no. of delicacies, as tht is wht makes it stand out, also it shud be balanced in taste, n easy on palate, (nothing extravagant)... which gains it a mass appeal...
Finally, the baarah jyotirling darshan came as a surprise...

The first pizza was introduced by traffic jam restaurant in sadar, in early 2000 , the taste and flavours given by them on veg and nonveg have not changed , they are still tasty as they were many years ago...these two restaurants like navnita and traffic jam would have given perfect perception of food flavours ,of how jabalpuria people like it

Navnita restaurant has been running in city for more than 15 years or more, the city evolved but there taste still remain the same, and best dessert is kulhad wali sweet dahi, perfect for digestion, I wish u would have covered it....

Am sorry to say but u can't call it food tour without going to actual food places famous for, like clock tower for chinese food , kamling restaurant, paneer patties from 4 seasons, traffic jam , navnita, these places have serving taste of jabalpur from past many years.
