It's just Black Propaganda that Aegon mistreated Halaena and hated her. He had made Halaena's son, Jaeherys his heir, then Maelor despite having bastards. This implies that Aegon did actually love Halaena.

I didn’t like their relationship in the book even though it was reported they were not happy in their marriage there was communication and they share a marriage bed until blood and cheese. Aegon’s reactions wasn’t as paternal to the death of his son as it have been compare to Aemond’s rouge rage after Jaehaerys but then again Aegon was described as someone not very interested in the role of king even after being crowned. He kind of took it more seriously after Rhaenrya and Daemon won king’s landing and he was force to hide and after all his children, wife and brothers were killed. He didn’t want Rhaenrya or daemon’s blood to survived that is why he wanted to killed Baela and Aegon III. He was never a faithful husband to Helaena. He loved his wine and his whores kind of like Robbert Baratheon. He actually remains me a lot of older Robbert just in younger form. He drank mostly to numb his fears of the war and when he had to go out to battle as he wasn’t very gore lover as Aemond was. However, in the show they have made it worse. By making him so careless but in a very moronic way. They took away his relationship with Aemond and sunfyre. And even his relationship with Alicent. Helaena seems disgusted by him. They have isolated them so much. Like Helaena was very popular in king’s landing she was great image helper to her husband and brothers who were not liked at all by the people. She was bubbly, kind and sweet. Aegon now is a perverted young man, with no self esteem, very unhealthy relationships with all his family who put him there to suck him dry (otto and Aemond) I don’t understand why people even find this pair or try to even romanticized them when there was no romantic love between them and now the show version is even worse making Aegon more disrespectful and obnoxious.
A lot of people never read the book (me included), they only see aegon and helena relationship through a few animated videos on youtube that sum up the entire event of the dance of dragon (which made to acompany Got shows). In those vids their relationship wasn’t mention with much details except it looked like when their son died, helena was broken and aegon made up his mind after he saw his sister lost her mind. That gives the audient the feeling event though aegon didn’t particularly fond of this marriage he still care for her in some standard. In the show they did try to make him looked worse so he can got more sympathy when his character arch changes in next season, pretty common technique from hbo writter like what they did with jaime lannister…
