- In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4.5 mile circular walk from Longham to Kinson and back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
My journey starts with a full English Breakfast at the Angel Inn (!) which is situated on the A348 in Longham. After breakfast, I leave the pub & head West to Coneygar Farm before changing direction to the South towards my next destination - the Longham Lakes Reservoir.
The lakes are former gravel pits and are now a haven for wildlife. There is a path that goes around both lakes and I follow the one on the Eastern side.
Leaving the lakes, I cross Longham bridge, by the Lpngham Pumping Station, and cross the Millhams Mead Nature Reserve to visit the delightful St Andrews Church at Kinson.
Retracing my steps. Re-crossing the river Stour, I pass the Bridge House Hotel and follow the Stour Valley Way, Eastwards, past Dudsbury Golf Course.
Leaving the Stour shortly after the golf course, I head North to explore the Iron Age Hill Fort at Dudsbury.
My final section of the walk takes me through the pretty woodland of the Belle Vue Plantation, back to The Angel Inn.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.
Great place to start your walk, especially as The Angel is dog friendly. Good to see you back out with Logan.
Thanks Andrew. Yes - that breakfast was the perfect start!
Oh my goodness Dave I work in the office at St Andrew's Church. Sorry I missed you I would have unlocked the church tower and showed you where Gulliver's men hoisted up the contraband. You can still see the grooves of the ropes in the Tower. (They stored it in the Tower) Behind the church (North Churchyard) is the grave of Robert Trotman who was a smuggler who was shot in Poole. Thank you for putting this delightful video together. Was lovely to see Kinson and surrounding areas.
Wow - what a lovely place to work Rachel. Such a pretty church with a very interesting history for sure!
You never know what is in a church tower!
Thanks Dave , another very interesting and well presented walk. I remember Jim Kellaway was the landlord of the White Hart pub in 70's . Really enjoyed the tour of St. Andrews as I was christened in the church in the early 1950's. Cheers Steve
Thank you Steve. What a pretty church St Andrews is - great that you have a lovely personal connection with it as well. Thanks for watching.
Good afternoon Dave another very enjoyable video beautiful church the breakfast made me hungry looking forward to the next one already.
Thank you Craig. The breakfast certainly was a great idea at the start!
Another great walk for us to share!
Thank you Dave and Logan!
That breakfast looked amazing...wish there was smella ision!😊
Super walk Dave. The Church was really nice and well cared for. The Longham lakes were glorious as well as the wonderful landscape. The pubs charming and quaint. It was interesting that you mentioned that Telly Savalas owned that Hotel in the 60s&70s. Goodness, that takes us back to what some might say those halycion days!!. Oh! i nearly forgot. Hope you enjoyed that super breakfast i suspect Logan did. Many thanks.
Hi Dave , lovely walk , thanks .
This is my area. When you walk across the Kinson nature reserve, you were actually on top of an old tip which was very busy in the early 70s, anything and everything went in there !
Also there are many stories and tales about a series of tunnels under , or leading from the church, all to do with smuggling!
Thanks for the background information - I did wonder a bit about the history of that nature reserve!
My back yard! I live right next to the lakes there at Longham. The river has totally burst its banks here now and its chaos but its a nice place in summer.
Hope you visit again and I bump into you and Logan!
What a lovely area to live in. Yes, I can just imagine that the Stour is very much in "full flow" at the moment ...... it was looking a lot calmer that day for sure!
@DaveFord Oh yes, it certainly is in full flow, full flow across half of Longham , haha.
What a lovely day for a walk . This is such a pretty little area and breakfast would be so good before your walk . Logan gets a treat I know he loved that Dave. Thanks so much for putting a smile on my face watching this . Hugs to Logan. ☀️
Happy New Year Dave and Logan. Thankyou for this walk, it's brought back memories of childhood summer days with a net and jam jar looking for tiddlers in the river at Longham! We've walked around the lakes many times with our 2 lukis. The birdlife is always plentiful. The dear old White Hart pub, many good nights spent in there in my youth. It was the watering hole for the Oakmedians rugby boys in late 60s on.... we girls were supporters and tea makers (of course!). The Dudsbury camp also a good memory, I camped there with the Girl Guides, way back when Noah was a boy 😂. Keep walking, boys. We watch one or two videos every night..... beats everything else hands down😊
Thank you Helen. So glad that it brought back some lovely memories for you. Thanks for watching.
Logan is such a cutie pie!
Another video full of interest and beauty. I was a bit astounded right at the start when you mentioned breakfasts and I thought you were not going to partake of one! That area by the weir was so pretty with the sunlight glinting down. Logan was looking very expectant at the end for a taste of those characterful crisps!! Thank you for sharing your walk with us.
Thanks Jean. It was certainly worth delaying the start of the walk in order to sample the breakfast - purely for research purposes of course!
Thanks for a great video. Not only did I live in Kinson not far from St Andrews Church in Millhans Rd I also lived at Dudsbury Guide Camp in the late 60's before it became a golf course. Great memories thank you.
Thank you Mike & indeed thanks for watching.
You do the best walks on UA-cam and show how a very good trained dog behaves and I'll keep an eye out for you on my walks. Bfn. :)
Thank you Charlie. Yes, Logan is a god lad (it was his eighth birthday yesterday!).
How have we missed this! We often visit near here collecting or returning our grandson, and will definitely be checking out the lakes and the nature reserve. Happy New Year to you and Logan, and thank you for so many great ideas for places to walk and things to visit.
Happy New Year to you & yours, Pauline. :)
Thank's again for another great video Dave, it's hard to believe most of that area you filmed was a huge rubbish dump back in the seventies I'm sure that most of Bournemouths seagulls were residents there at one time or another.
Thank you John. It is certainly an area that has changed quite significantly over the last few decades for sure!
love these hamlets and their stories, beautiful walk by the lake and countryside
Thank you Cath. :)
Lovely England. And what a gem of a small church.
Yes, I was rather taken by that little church! Thanks for watching John.
Lovely video Dave, have lived in the area all my life and didn’t know there was anywhere interesting to walk! St Andrews church reminds me of my Boys Brigade days, once a month we’d parade there from Kinson. Keep up the great walks!
Thank you Andy. Yes, I was surprised to see how much "countryside" there is to explore around there as, on a map, it initially looks so urban.
Amazing walk through the village with wonderful fields and beautiful lakes
Thank you Keith. Happy New Year to you.
I bet you tried that tyre swing Dave after the camera was turned off. Though, straight after that breakfast, probably not a wise thing to do. I thought you may have been a recipient in the New Year's Honours for all the selfless research you do on our behalf, and never a word of complaint! Keep it up.
Thank you. I undertook a quick "Health & Safety Assessment" and decided that
, for the welfare of the tree, it might not be a good idea to test out the tyre swing!
@@DaveFord Good thinking.

Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
Hi Dave
It appears the White Hart has permanently closed. I even tried phoning the pub but the number was dead. Sign if the times sadly😢
That is sad news Mike.
@@mikewalker8655 It's reopened now
Disgraceful video. No sausage for Logan
Ah, but we did share the sausage at breakfast! :)
