I'm a new subscriber who loves the spirit, the dancing styles with & without the fans, and the outfits that are shown in this video. I read all of the comments but I didn't find any comment that mentioned the birthday dollars that are pinned to Hosea McCain's suit. I'm an African American community folklorist who voluntarily curates a blog called pancocojams that showcases African American cultures and other Black cultures throughout the world. I've featured a post on that blog about pinning birthday dollars. I believe this custom comes from the Nigerian and other West African custom of raining paper money to bless or show your appreciation to people such as a bride and groom or drummers and dancers. In the United States adaptation of that African custom, people give the birthday celebrant a dollar or more than one dollar (usually of one dollar denomination) to acknowledge their birthday. Those dollars are pinned (with a safety pin) on the celebrant's shirt, suit, or the top of her dress. Sometimes the birthday celebrant pins a dollar on her or his outfit to start off that tradition of getting birthday dollars. Often strangers will give him or her a dollar as a way of saying "Happy Birthday" because they see that pinned money. I'm trying to document who, where, and when this pinning dollars custom is done in the United States. I think this is mostly (or entirely?) an African American custom. But I don't remember it being done when I was growing up in the 1950s and mid 1960s in Atlantic City, New Jersey. I know that some Black children, teens, and adults in my adopted hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania wear birthday dollars, but I don't know when it started and I can't remember when I first noticed this custom being done. As a result of your video, it appears that this custom is practiced among some Black folks in the DMV (Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia area, but how common is it and when do you first remember it being done?
