    Even though I am familiar with such scales, i so much enjoy your videos. There is always something new to learn, or perhaps, a new approach. Thank you Paul. You have a very pleasant voice/ accent =D and you explain everything so clearly.

      Thanks so much for those kind words. I like to explain my reasoning behind things if i can. There's s many scales and bits of music theory that are valuable to know but i think they sink in and stay with us better if you know a bit of the reasons behind why things work and are important. :)

    Nice vid Paul. It's good to see you promoting the use of the bis key. I often get students who's teachers are mainly clarinet players, and they always want to play side Bb.

    • @PaulHaywood
      @PaulHaywood  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Mark, thanks. Yeah i grew up using the bis Bb key and the "fork" Bb (f or f# key) for chromatic decent from B natural.
      I sometimes think Sidekey would be easier in some situations but i like having the one main method and Bis key came naturally, even after i spent some time using side key for A#s while practicing sharp key exercises. It never stuck though.

      @@PaulHaywood Yeah, sticky bis key is a pain! I use all 3 methods, but side Bb the least. That keys only there to play a dirty high F# ! I'm terrible for use the bis even in B and F# major. Gotta kick the habit.

    So many scales, so little lung capacity am I right? Will be waiting for next lessons Paul, extremely good intro.
    PS: What's the name of the music in the outro? Sooo smooth

      Thanks Josh! Really glad you like the new intro. took a while, i'm probably going to change the "Paul Haywood Sax" graphic after the split screen but it'll do for now.
      Haha. you know it! Dorian minor will be the next scale lesson coming up.
      The track is called "Blessing". It's a track composed and recorded by Damian Rodd, all the sax parts are played by myself, another part of the track is what i used for the intro split screen sequence. It's a very beautiful and eclectic track. :~)

    When you play the A major, you have to press the octave key right when you get To D?

    • @PaulHaywood
      @PaulHaywood  Рік тому +1

      That's right, for all notes above the middle C# (no fingers) you use the octave key.
      Hope that helps, and that the sax learning is going well! 🙂

    am actually learning to saxophone but am kinda confusing between minor and major scale..... i don't know which to learn..or which to start...😪😪😪😪

    • @PaulHaywood
      @PaulHaywood  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, learn your C major scale first, then this minor scale. Then learn C major pentatonic and then C minor pentatonic.
      Then start doing the same in other keys. This is a good way to learn the differences between these 4 fundamental scales. :)

      @@PaulHaywood not for the comment but it popped up immediately and I needed to understand modes. I have watched videos on modes but didnt get any breakthrough this gave me an idea and also I watched some other videos later and its beginning to be clear.

    • @PaulHaywood
      @PaulHaywood  4 роки тому

      @@JoshuaWalter Fantastic. really pleased to hear that. I'll be doing Dorian Minor for the next scale video, and probably the other modes after that too.
      Till then i think one of the pieces of advice i can give is to focus on that phrase i said in this video:
      For (C aeolian) 6th mode, so "what is C the 6th note of?" = C is 6th note of Eb major scale, it's "parent scale" so they share the same notes.
      For (A aeolian) 6th mode, so "what is A the 6th note of?" = A is 6th note of C major scale, it's "parent scale" so they share the same notes.
      You can do this for any Modal scale.
      Phrygian is the 3rd mode of major scale. Say we want F# phrygian scale. so we need to ask: "what is F# the 3rd note of?" The answer is F# is the third note of the D major scale. Therefore F# phrygian is built from the 3rd step, the F# from D major scale. So it shares the same notes as it's parent scale D major.
      I know i'm expaining that a bit round and round, but i remember when i was learning this that i sometimes got it backwards so i like to go round and round when i explain it. Haha!
      Let me know if that type of thinking helps understand modes. If it does i'll try and do a lesson on just that.
