My first 35mm camera was a Nikon Nikkormat. Loved that camera and should have never sold it. Now I shoot with a Nikon Zfc. The Zfc is setup for black and white with a Kokak Tri Max plug in. Most of my work is in B&W. Love your videos. This is the second time I have watched this one. Hi from Sandpoint, Idaho USA.

Your favorite image is mine as well from that roll. Good to see you exploring and pushing. I love shooting XP2 and have GOBS of Kodak BW400CN (Kodak's version of XP2) that I got for 50 cents a roll, and the BEST thing about both of these "chromogenic BW" films is that you can shoot from ISO 50 to ISO 800 on the same roll and just develop normally and it all comes out great...And yes, your lab scanned your film in color mode and that's why you are getting those color cast results. Next time you could ask them to scan in BW mode. I love a lot of true BW films, (Pan F 50 being one of my favs) but the versatility and latitude of XP2 is why it's still my favorite, even when I was developing all my own film. :) I also think that a series of architectural shots in XP2 with an Olympus Pen F half-frame (where they would all be vertical diptychs) would be amazing in your style. :)

Yes next time I will ask them to scan bw mode instead as it will save time for me. We have a scanner here but it's an epson 550 and it takes forever and I am to busy to sit down and do it so just outsource that to the lab. Yes my partner almost bought me a half frame camera a while back as he said the same as you that it would suit my style. Will have to keep an eye out for one. I actually have a lot of cameras at the moment that I advent even been able to shoot!
A Pen F would be a nice camera to get, but they're the "classy" end of the Olympus half frames and they made cheaper half frame cameras that are still great, but don't have interchangeable lenses like the Pen F's. You could also look at a Canon Demi half frame camera. I have the EE17 version and it's a great little camera. I don't know if Hashim on Pushing Film still has his Demi, but he liked his a lot as well. He posted a UA-cam video about it, if you've not seen it go and have a look.
XP2 along with HP5 is my favourite bw film. I love the fine grain and the contrast. Great for streetphotography. I think the purple colour cast is due to the C41 chemicals. I've not had that happen yet. Thanks for sharing it all. I especially loved those interesting architecture shots. Really nice contrasting shapes and shadows :)

Great video! I love my Nikon FE solid performing camera plus there is a tonne of amazing lenses out there! As for XP2, I generally don't shoot that film stock, I also prefer traditional B&W it's a faster turnaround on shooting, processing, and posting. When I have shot it, I will simply run a desaturate in Photoshop to remove any colour cast.

Great shots! I recently got a Nikon FE and love the camera. I have only shot some expired film in it so far, but images you can get out of it are great.

Great video Lucy, I haven't shot XP2 in years, I usually shoot HP5 and FP4. I do love what you got out of XP2, not you can fix the magenta cast by amping the greeen channel up in post proessing or during the scanning the process at home. XP2 would be great for travel so you can get stuff processed quickly with local labs. The Nikon FE is a great camera, love mine!

I think FP4 would be nice for your style of photos and your Aussie weather conditions, if you haven't shot it yet - very sharp and nice contrast, it's my #1 summer B/W film. I believe the color cast of XP2 is due to the orange mask that C41 films usually have, but "real" B/W don't - something to do with the process. If you scan yourself, in some scan software there's a "remove orange mask" option that I believe is active by default on color, but deactivated by default if you choose B/W... I might be wrong though, it's been years since I last shot XP2.
No I haven’t tried FP4! I think I saw Matt day had a video on it recently. I will def give that a try if you think it will suit!! That’s interesting as well about the orange mask…I didn’t know that. I wasn’t sure if it was the film or the way the lab scanned it. It was easy enough to fix in light room anyway but I still think true black and white is a better film. Seeing in black & white is totally different from color. You have to get used to it. It needs a lot of practice. The reward is amazing, because there are so many new ways of artistic expression in black & white film shooting.
nice photos, one tip, if you are getting colour casts, this is why filters are used in B&W, they match the colour temp of the light to the film (side note: some films are DAYLIGHT ballanced, others are Tungsten balanced {fluoro lights colour}), also if some films are used to shoot green or red, they display it differently.

@@LucyLumen yes, but may I also suggest a book on photography, esp. on the topic of darkroom developing/printing, as these show you what each filter does to the eventual image, what films need what filter, etc, sometimes neatly in an A3 table or chart.
Because you mentioned the shots of the old buildings. Photographers can here document history. Many old buildings, sign etc. will not be here much longer. The wrecking balls rule the world. Nice old buildings have to go because of the greed for profit. We shoot memories for the next generations.
You can also process c41 colour film in black and white chemicals. XP2 is a great film, lots of latitude allows you to shoot at different ISO speeds on the same roll and develop as normal c41.
Yeah it’s really handy how you don’t have to get it hand devved as that costs me more at my lab! Didn’t know it had lots of latitude though good to know. I’ll have to shoot it again. Thanks for watching lovely 😊
My main 35mm shooting camera is the Nikon FE, I prefer it over my Nikon FE2, I much prefer the feel in my hands of the FE with its 50mm almost pancake lens even if it has a slower max shutter speed at 1/1000 compare to 1/4000 for the FE2

Great shots! Really love the bird on the building. Been shooting lots of black & white and it really does force you to approach the image in a different way than with color. It’s a good way to mix things up too! Again, great shots!

f11, f16, f22. At these apertures the optical performance of lenses decrease enormously. It's better using for example the Ilford FP4 with 125 ASA or even the Ilford Pan F with 50 ASA the get down bright Australian light.
Yes! Love these photos Lucy! Although…XP2 is my current fav black and white film so I may be biased haha. I just love being able to shoot a 400 speed film that is super sharp and smooth. I like grain sometimes, but there’s something about XP2 that just speaks to me. Your style really translates to b&w too! I really like a lot of this roll of yours.

Great shots! I love XP2 film and successfully pushed it to 1600. Purple cast on the negatives is normal. I think the lab scanned your film as color film, instead of bw, that's why you've got the cast on your scans. Next time ask the lab to scan it as BW film and you won't have to color correct anything

NO, they are NOT mechanically the same!!, there is an important difference, that in the lens mount, takes ONLY the Ai lenses, and later, NO bunny ears allowed, the metering prism housing would be FOULED by the ears, and the coupling is, like in any dslr, like the D700 for instance, by the Plastic ring, NOT by a pin engagement, like the F, F2,F3 used, that is what the "bunny ears" engaged into. also the lenses designed specifically for this series of camera, more compact versions, compared to the older designs.
Hi Andy, thanks for clearing this up I'm not sure exactly what I said but I meant they felt the same to me that's all. I try not to get to bogged down with the specs of a camera or technical jargon etc. My main aim is to share photography and my work and the image is my main goal. There are plenty of channels on UA-cam that will know all of this and explain it and I will leave the mechanics of cameras and such to them! I used the FE for several years. At one point I ended up wearing glasses. I then switch to the F3 HP that provided a higher eye point relief.

ニコマートELはニコンで最初の電子シャッターカメラです。ニコンFEの基本性能は、ニコマートELと同じだったはず。中古のカメラは説明書がついていないことが多いので、ELとFEのセルフタイマーレバーをレンズマウント側に倒した時にAEロックになる事を知らない人が多いのが残念。
ニコマートELの電池収納場所は、教えてくれる人がいないとわからないと思う。

And you should def shoot more b&w! I’ve taken on my partner mentality of shooting more b&w in the winter here as it’s so grey anyway. I can see how your area just pulls you to colour though! Your very spoilt for good colours haha
Great shots! I love XP2 film and successfully pushed it to 1600. Purple cast on the negatives is normal. I think the lab scanned your film as color film, instead of bw, that's why you've got the cast on your scans. Next time ask the lab to scan it as BW film and you won't have to color correct anything

Hi Lucy. Like your vinyl collection. What's about a new ABBAmania in Australia? The new vinyl record voyage is out after 40 years. At the concert tours back in the 70s the ABBAmania must have been insane. Much of the Australian tour videos reminds me on BEATLESmania.
People in Australia LOVE ABBA!!!! especially the oldies. I am not a huge fan to be honest I'm sorry. I have seen a few posts lately on insta of some abba records though and any kind of vinyl collecting is such a good hobby, as is photography. is there for what I see magenta tint to it or it is due to a scanning?
It is the scans - I used a different lab to what I use now and they weren’t as diligent.
@@LucyLumen ah yeah it is quite a common mistake photo labs do. They didn't check the paper condition before printing < a few years experience in the photo lab speaking;)>
So the magenta colouring is because the lab scanned it as COLOUR instead of Black and White. You need to tell them to scan as BW. 😊
I know. Back in the days before I started using the legends at Ikigai film lab. Shows how important it is to send your film to a proper lab.

The Ilford XP2 seems to add some colors in black & white images because of the C41 chemicals.
Yes a few people have said this and I think that is part of it. Also I think the lab may have scanned in colour mode not black and white perhaps?? Do you shoot much black and white or prefer colour?
@@LucyLumen I shoot both. Ilford PanF, FP4 and HP5 or Agfa APX. Kodak ektar, old stuff like Fuji superia 100, 200, 400.

NO, they are NOT mechanically the same!!, there is an important difference, that in the lens mount, takes ONLY the Ai lenses, and later, NO bunny ears allowed, the metering prism housing would be FOULED by the ears, and the coupling is, like in any dslr, like the D700 for instance, by the Plastic ring, NOT by a pin engagement, like the F, F2,F3 used, that is what the "bunny ears" engaged into. also the lenses designed specifically for this series of camera, more compact versions, compared to the older designs.
Bro she clearly meant they felt the same ergonomically not that they are mechanically the same camera.
Hi Andy, thanks for clearing this up I'm not sure exactly what I said but I meant they felt the same to me that's all. I try not to get to bogged down with the specs of a camera or technical jargon etc. My main aim is to share photography and my work and the image is my main goal. There are plenty of channels on UA-cam that will know all of this and explain it and I will leave the mechanics of cameras and such to them!
