Asha Bhosle is one of India`s finest and most versatile playback singers, with innumerable accolades and laurels to her name. She was born in a small village in Maharashtra. Her father, the late Deenanath Mangeshkar was a renowned theatre artist and classical singer who passed away when she was nine. This prompted Asha and her sister Lata Mangeshkar to take up acting and singing to support their family. She made her singing debut with the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). Renowned for her soprano voice range and often credited for her versatility, Asha Bhosle's work includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, and Rabindra Sangeet. Apart from Hindi, she has sung in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. In 2013, she made her debut as an actress in the film Mai and received critical acclaim for her performance. Asha Bhosle has sung over 12,000 songs. In 2011, she was officially acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history. The Government of India honored her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
