Episode 7 Installing sails and rigging + our 1st cruise on Nehan up to the Columbia River fuel dock

  • For the first time Nehan is running off her own fuel tanks! We celebrate by dressing her up with her man sail, jib and riggins and cruise up the Columbia River to the fuel dock to fill up her tanks since they are fixed and no longer leaking!
Shocked with ourselves - We leave the docks flawlessly!
Also, added new jib sheets and had to repair our jib furler that needed to be adjusted.
Overall a great day aboard Nehan.

    0:15 Right great work!
There is a trick I learned when I first started sailing 40 plus yrs ago!
When you are working on decks edge get a large umbrella, open it and tie it below where you are working and it will catch whatever you my drop, instead of it going in the water it will drop into the umbrella!
    Great job again friends!
    Cheers
    Yukon John

We do have an umbrella on board too! Wish we had your tip when we did this project! Keep the tips coming!
Ps. Episode 5, we also learned our lesson of putting down a towel so we don't loose things into the bilge "place of no return"

Did the previous owner say if the depth sounder was calibrated to read depth under the keel, or depth from where the sensor is located? Most folks put in an offset to take into account the difference between the sensor's location on the hull and the length to the bottom of the keel. That way the "depth" you read is what you have under the keel before you scrape bottom and you don't need to subtract the distance from the sensor to the keel. Also, if you don't know this already, the rudder's effect on steering usually starts around 2 knots and above so if you go too slow the response of the boat to the rudder movements can be real sluggish due to the full keel you have.

Really enjoyed that! You guys are going to be fine. But it might be a good idea to consider having an experienced sailor come aboard to show you how to sail. Good luck.

Wow, we keep our boat about a mile east of you in Tomahawk bay. Be careful and stay in the channels as the river went way down this year and has a few shoals. Plus keep an eye out for logs floating down stream, the rains have started and that means logs

Oh wow thats awesome we were so close! We were at the docks right behind the Holiday Inn under the I-5 Bridge.
Indeed! We kept seeing huge logs floating down river and knew we'd have to keep our eyes peeled! We did have a few close calls we were able to dodge but got too close foe comfort!
