    The story behind the invention of slap was actually when the drummer didn't show up at a performance, causing Larry to use a new percussive technique in the place of him.

      I heard that he invented slap when he use to play music with his mom. She was on piano and he was on bass. They had no drummer so he decided to play percussion with his bass.

    2) The first "slap" ("Thumpin") song was Sly and the Family Stone's 1st hit, "Dance To The Music"

      That did look like it might have been a double bass but that style is more commonly played on the tololoche which is slightly smaller than the English double bass. The real kick is it the tololoche uses fat nylon Spanish strings that make the tone a little softer and the slap a little harder. Definitely UA-cam tololoche. If you liked the bad here you will love tololoche.

    There is an 80's video of Larry doing a tutorial, called something like "Right Hand Slap Bass Technique". Man, I can watch the first 30 seconds of that over and over! Cool stuff...true pioneer!

    Graham was one of the greats. I saw him with his band Graham Central Station in '75 at the Crater Festival in Honolulu. He also pioneered the use of the voice box while he was with Sly and the Family Stone.

      Do u know who Thunder thumbs is!?!?! Louis Johnson! Fender made a bass guitar custom for him! One of the baddest Bassists known! Larry & Louis are primo! I had to show a 70 yr old guitar player about him! Many jus thought they were hearing Larry when it was Thunder Thumbs!!!! He’s on Quincy’s & Michael Jackson’s older albums etc!🤙🏽👌🙌🏽🙏🏽👋🏻
