- Quite possibly the coolest club of the 1980's! "Footage from a California new wave synthpop club is mesmerizing and awesome" - Dangerous Minds.
00:00 - State Farm - Yazoo.
03:31 - You're so Fine - Egyptian Lover.
06:50 - I Touch Roses - Book of Love.
10:11 - Native Love (Step by Step) - Divine.
12:47 - Go - Tone on Tail.
15:47 - Trans-X - Living on Video.
Isabella Ibarra at the Southeast Career Technical Academy deserves full credit for an excellent compilation she put together featuring the patrons of the Stratus Dance Club in the San Diego area (actually Spring Valley) in 1986 and 1987. The clips were quite chopped and muddled so I set them to the music playing in the club, updating the video and replacing the audio in the process.
This was East County, and Stratus was a club that catered heavily to the new romantic and goth crowds-these videos are all labeled “The Metro Beat and Club Sanctuary Nights” which was an 18-21 event and a regular rendezvous for the new wavers in the area. Jane’s Addiction actually played Stratus right during this period, in the spring of 1987.
The clips start us off with the Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary,” there’s a good deal of Divine (both “Shake It Up” and “Native Love (Step by Step)”) and Sexual Harassment (”I Need a Freak”) and Strawberry Switchblade’s version of “Jolene” and Trans-X (”Living on Video”) alongside more enduring faves.
At 13:15 I’m dancing in the background but I move to dancing with straw hat girl. So cool!!! I’m 57 now! To see myself at 21 again having so much fun truly made my day thank you
I see you, you look so cool.
I made this a few years ago and technology has since advanced (as has my editing skills) so I was recently considering upscaling the raw footage to HD and remaking it. I will tag you in it if I do.
There is a part 1 to this, you should check it out as you may appear in that one too... Judging by your username you might actually enjoy a lot of the content on my channels, this one is mainly for early trance, pop, hip hop etc and my other (rem:trecords) is mainly for early and obscure ambient trance & experimental.
So happy you have found this bit of nostalgia, I make these things for a hobby and it's very rewarding when when it reminds people of previous happy times.
@@Yungrexyyes I started listening to EDM & Trance very young! As you see! I’m not in the other video I checked. However this was so awesome and a time to remember for sure. I look forward to hearing more
There are many girls at this point., are you the blond girl with white hat and sunglasses? cool . i'm 57 too i'm from class 1984. Did you meet with your friends of Stratus? They meet in "My space" and now on Facebook.
I was 15 and not allowed to go 😂
@@BEACHDUDE71I was 15 and I was there! 😂😂
Back in mid 80s the 1940s seemed so distant you got old just thinking about it. Here we are 40 years on and the 80s still seem like it was only a shot away. What a time to be alive, in particular the eclectic music and club culture was rockin and every clique of youth you could imagine sprang up from nowhere. The 80s man 🙏🏽
Everyone's hair was different & unique. Big hairsprayed hair was the trend, yet not one head of hair looks exactly the same! Love it! 💚🩷
Everyone's style was so good
this is how to look good
Ha. I'm 61 now and still dancing like this.😁
All those cigarettes in dancing hands! Using nearly a can of hairspray for each club visit, myself, I'm surprised none of us went up in flames.
Lol. It actually did happen a LOT. Many a night out I had featured a bouffant poodle perm going "wooof" at some stage :D
It was mainly candles or cigarette lighters that sparked them, not the actual cig's themselves ;)
I have a scar on my wrist from being burned by a cigarette on the dance floor back in 1989
I loved dancing with a lit cig in the early 90's until it brushed on someone. lol
TransX and Book of Love, and Depeche Mode, and Erasure, and New Order/Joy Division, the Cure, Dead or Alive, Bronski Beat, the Smiths, OMD, tin tin, Human League, TSOL, the Specials, Oingo Boingo, Bauhaus, yep, I was there! 80s club scene in California. Untouchable! Never to be repeated in the History of the world. Totally Unique time! The fashions, expression, and music 🎶!Yep!
Little did we know, how perfectly Cool it was,
never to come again... but we LIVED it, so there!
Don't forget Ministry. Front 242 nitzer ebb. Church and INXS
I went to an OMD concert last year. Awesome 🤩
I was there!!
808 State!
Not a god damn cell phone in sight and I love it . We were so much happier in the 80's !!!??
Not if you lived in a small town with 24% unemployment.
yes
...and no nasty tattoos covering every square inch of skin!!!
@@sinsear8786 different clubs. Houston's numbers had it all. Tattoos even.
If they had been invented back in 80s then you would see them. If cell phones were invented 100 years ago people would have been using them. Human nature never changes through history only the technology.
Gonna say this is more early 1985. Our club was exactly the same at that moment. Keep in mind, we had to tone down our "look" during the daytime, out amongst the "normals." It took around 4 hours to get ready go out for 3 hours. :-) Proud to be Generation Jones!
I would say AFTER 85 MORE ACID HOUSE 87. Why? Look at 12:08; it looks like a rave to me; no hair; no Romantics, just Ravers...l don't know; l'm from London ; so you could be right.
So many pretty people,I’m turning 59 next month,to be young again ,thank you for posting this video❤
I did too
If I don’t style my hair, it’s naturally all frizzy and crazy looking. In the 80s it would have actually been cool! 🤣
Ça me rappelle tellement de bons souvenirs! Ouf! La bonne musique qui explosait de partout, les gens qui s’habillaient avec style au lieu de se déshabiller, les téléphones qui n’existaient pas alors on vivait vraiment la «vibe» au lieu de la filmer et de se prendre en photo: quelle époque!🙏
We had the best time dancing in the 80`s I`m now 57 yrs, old. Thank you you for this video brings back such good memories!
Ahhh ... back when you could look 100% like Draco Malfoy and nobody would have thought of you being gay ... and if you were, nobody gave an absolute F !!!
Those were the days! How I spent my Saturday nights when I was in my 20’s 😢❤
I’m 58 and still dancing and Roller skating to 80s and current music. The Gen z students I teach to skate prefer 80s music to skate to.
Literally one of the best videos on UA-cam and I've watched a ton. Nostalgia fest for sure!
I'm sure anything that helps you forget your now wearing adult diapers is great in your opinion.
And now we're the old people....... damn. I still dance but have clearly moved on.....bring on the house n DnB!!!
OMG, these wear the f..king days. Reminds me of Danceateria on 21st NYC. 4 floors of good music.
It's funny watching this because all these individuals are in their 50's and 60's!! Wow!!
we are lol
YEAH...and I'm one of them....BUT I CAN still dance my ASS OFF!
Lol but my 60 year old mother still has her cool hair.
The 80's were a new era in music. British alternative and American rock. MTV actually played music videos and awesome talk and game shows. A great time to be in your 20's.
Whoever was filming this iconic decade was a genius. I wish I took AV classes in school. Those students were the OG vloggers of their time. I see every one of my eras in this club: punk, skater, new wave, Mod, preppy, jock, jazzercise,😂 Good times.
That’s an interesting list of people from the 80s! Do we all remember this one?
“The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wasteoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he’s a righteous dude.”
Even some Psychedelic era vibes going on
Totally!
Yeah and bc not many had video cameras or too big to carry around all the time, we didn’t get to document our generation as easily as the current generation. So yeah, the ones who did were the film and video students.
I’m in the video at 13:15 I be dancing in all white long light brown curly hair with girl in straw hat I begin there and go forward a minute
Yes people ,I was 17 in 86 and I loved the new wave seen, I was that robot dancer electric sounds well cool peace n love
I was 15 in 86’ and was at every teen dance there was. Lol
fantastic Times I was early 20s, 61 now
When androgynous was totally acceptable in the clubs...amazing times..unsurpassed
Androgynous? You should read this book.

1980s. Boy meets another boy. The first boy is straight. The second is a stunning blond(e) wearing red lipstick...
It would still be accepted if they were trying to push children into it. No one has a problem with adults doing any of it.
I had a big birthday recently and friends sent me photos of these days. Not a single cleavage to be seen in any of them…hadn’t even realised until now. We wore big shirts and dead people’s clothes mostly at the clubs I went to.🤣
Early 90,s shits on these morbid stiffs
Yep, it will never be like the 80s again, in the history of the world 🌎. Totally unique time on the Earth 🌎, never to be repeated! The 80's club scene in California! Bitchin! 👍💥
I love Yazoo. It was started by Vince Clarke, who left Depeche Mode after their first album. This song is on the album, "Upstairs at Eric's". Thank you.
I love Yaz. ( American here haha) Alison Moyet still brings me to tears. The late 80’s and 90’s were the best times in history. We all accepted each others uniqueness and celebrated along with each other. I remember dancing the entire 4 to 5 hours in the club. Thank you for letting me relive this!
I am not meaning to pick your comment apart as I also love "Yaz" as we call them in Canada - and respect for your mention of the Yaz/DM connection in Clarke!! Just pointing out for those looking for this track "State Farm" - it was released as a 12" and does not appear (at least in North America) on either of the 2 Yaz albums. I don't think it was released until about a year after Upstairs at Eric's came out. I played this record in 2001 at a minimal tech night at a bar in Montreal and everyone got hyped haha ❤
After watching a lot of this videos I’m starting to see familiar faces and that’s how it was back then when clubbing you would see regulars.

I love th3 80s swag. It was so wild and free. The New wave/synthpop/ electronic/experimental age. Look at that fab hair!!
The variety. Self expression was really encouraged. There are certain trends, yes- but a huge range of style choices.
I remember dancing in the club in the 80s.
Man I'm old
Really miss not having participated. A 13 year old in 1986, only allowed to go clubbing in the early 90s as folks would not allow me out during HS! The music scene had somewhat moved on by then with Eurodance/techno the dominant trends. Very different beat. By the early 90s, fashion had also changed, girls were Amy Grant lookalikes with baggy jeans. Big hair was out. And for guys, flannel shirts, stonewashed or ripped jeans. The Seattle grunge look. No one would have looked that smart with so many diverse fashion genres on show. That went out by 1991 and the mighty recession. What remained the same, however, is the fact there were no cellulars, you had to find a pay-phone to call your folks to pick you up or find someone to give you a ride back home. We also smoked as much. Gen X all the way and no regrets.
These people are actually cool and they were just being free and enjoying themselves. It wasn’t all about getting photos and posting they were genuinely being fucking bad.
Proud to be Gen X ...
Золотое время было!
Yup and we shaped the style for the following generations. Also took all the risks bc now many of the shocking thing back then are normal now. Thanks to Gen. X.
Me too
Same here
Yup!
My era, youth~~God bless all these beautiful people...turn the volume up~~dance, dance, dance, keep that body, mind moving~~
Some good lookers in that lot ..❤
All the people you see in this video are fantastic!! it was a time in history that needs to be recorded for prosperity!! It was a time of change from 80s music to more disco and eventually EDM but still had the punks and the romantics at the club :)
Actually, disco died in the 70s as metal bands became popular. The 80s picked up where Andy Warhol and the Alternative 60s left off, then became too popularized via bands like The Smiths, U2, The Clash etc, leaving it open to what we have today.
OMGOODNESS FAMOUS ACTORS ARE IN THIS VIDEO!!!
At 0:40 DAVID (*From "The Lost Boys", Kiefer Sutherland) taped here as a "vampire Rave clubber" after going thru his vampire goth stage!!!
At 7:43 MICHAEL (*from: "The Lost Boys", Michael Patric) just dancing his feet off.....then at 8:00 we have RYAN REYNOLDS clowning around and being his goofy self as he dances the night away....😂.... Who did I miss and Who can you find??
Haven't heard State Farm in like 30yrs... It's amazing how your brain supresses songs and gets triggered the minute u hear a old song
Is it just me or did they have way more style variants? Today is all white shirts and black pants lol
Individuality was the way... People were not afraid to express themselves, this was obviously before social media made people overly self conscious and more likely to blend in rather than stand out.
We had more stores/boutiques then. Some wore thrift shop clothes but they knew how to put their outfits together.
@dianelaag2944 " to put their outfits together "; you KNOW that!!!
the less your money was worth, the less uniform your style or not style, the cooler the scene.
a lot of the best punk bands of the era, for example, didn't do the punk look. in fact, in 36 or Brixton you could tell that some punk was from outta town if he had the full gear & hair and was unnecessarily rude. you'd meet far more often someone who was a punk but dressed up as skinhead or who liked classical music and had a little kid and the life that comes with that. some of the toughest people looked super straight.
and that's actually good because it inhibits prejudging, at least of a certain type.
"Now's the time on Sprockets when we dance!"
I’d love to see what some of these youngsters look like now. Like are they still this cool ? This is my age group but I was extremely sheltered. I hate I missed events like this. Also, I’m wondering how many people got cigarette burns while dancing 🤣
Hairspray and smoking in clubs was a recipe for disaster, saw a few impressive fireballs myself back in the day 🤣
And What are YOU like now ,Huh ?
Takes me back to my late teens, at Todd’s, Ledernacht/the City Club + the Shelter, in Detroit.

Stratus and Studio 9…….so many of us would go to Stratus first and then head over to Studio 9 which stayed open until 4-5am. Those were the days….best time of my life!!
Hey Rick, glad you found the video (and youself in it), and appreciate ya checking in.
Were Stratus & Studio 9 seperate venues? I made this edit but there is confusion over whether the footage is from Stratus or Studio 9 or if they were actually the same place?
Pues en Cádiz no había discoteca que cerrara a esas horas...hasta las 7 de la mañana y luego abrían otras ya prácticamente todo el día....Comenzabas un viernes y no terminabas hasta el domingo por la noche..

I was there from 84 to 88! My teen years were spent doing this instead of drugs. It was a special place for 18 and under.
You missed out.
Gen. Jones! In my twenties during the 80’s. It was a great decade. 🎉
Back when everyone had their own groove. Till electric slide came along and telling everyone how to dance 😂😆

We need to bring back the hawk mullet, now!
LOL. Guy @00:40 looks like one of the vampires from The Lost Boys.
He he, I don't know why but he reminds me of Ray Liotta... With bleached 80's hair :D
Great videos and music, i was 17/18 and on the other side of the pond where much of the music originated, good times for sure.

Very clever edit at 13:38!
Ha, well spotted :D there's few quirky little edits in there and I wondered if anyone would even notice. Tbf that was synched in the original footage (as was most of 'Living on Video') but 90% of the footage is of them dancing to completely different songs.
I'm 58. This takes me back to dancing with my gang of friends at Rock Island in Denver! No smartphones. People actually interacted. Then we'd go to Denny's afterward. Good times. that white and blue Benetton rugby. I had that exact one! (and the double Swatch watch for each wrist). LOL

I swear Gen z the lamest why we don’t dance like this 😂
Because now you know that big brother is watching you 👀 That video of the girls laughing at the chubby kid dancing in the club was brutal... These people had no fear of being dragged on socials, the likelyhood of being filmed in the bars/clubs was slim to zero back then. Thankfully, that is why people felt free to express themselves back then. Now all you have is a homogeneous bland blend of conformity.
