How to make a basic mugen stage

- After a few PM's I decided to make a tutorial on how to create a simple mugen stage from a jpeg. This is just to demonstrate how easy it is to make your very own stage. I like to use scenic pics with odd themes.
You can use practically anything you want and edit it any way you want as well. Once you know the basics the rest is easy.
I wrote this up for people that can't follow the vid.
Ok so you have a bitmap (in it's own folder beside a copy of the stage0 def file) that's 600 wide and 400 high. for example. And you want it to be your stage.
Open fighter factory, click the pallete icon. Select the bitmaps and open the bitmap you want. Optimise it. Now save it. Ok so that's your pcx file. Now click sprites and then the pcx icon. Open then pcx file you just saved.
Type Half the width of your bitmap in x axis and - 240 from the height in y axis. click in the boxes so the pic centers,
Now save it and click yes for individual pallette, You have saved your sff.
Now rename the def file and change the things I said in the vid. stage name background def, also you can make your floor tension 30 vertical follow .2 or whatever etc. go down to the very bottom of your .def file and delete everything below [BGM 1] thats only needed if u have put in backround animation if not then delete it
So you should have three files with the same name in your bitmaps folder now. Copy the def and sff into your mugen stage folder. And copy the name into your mugen data select folder like you would for any stage.
Hey presto. Take your time and you will get it right. Don't get frustrated. It's really easy.
Thanks for the tutorial, I'm gonna use a classroom full of kids. Perfect place for a highly dangerous brawl.
:v
hey i followed this tutorial exactly and when ever i try to load it it says error and mugen shuts down what do i do?
After some persistence, I finally got a stage of some sort created! Infinite high fives to you man. :D
Thank you. This is a wonderful tutorial.
Thanks for this tutorial man! You rock!
A Bitmap is a pixel by pixel image - an image represented as a two dimensional array of brightness values for pixels- a type of memory organization or image file format used to store digital images - a series of bits that represents a rasterized graphic image, each pixel being represented as a group of bits -
Question: How does I optimized image? I'm using Fighter Factory Ultimate, and when I put in my image; the pallet is automatically made, and the optimize option on the pallet menu is grayed out. It also grays out the icon for saving it as a sprite. Help?
I did exactly what you did, and I keep ending up with that black background where every frame stays there. How do I fix that?
I have a problem, my background's sprite won't show in game and the background turns black with everything the characters do imprinted on the background.
is there a way to make the whole stage fit on screen without having to re-size it?
i did it just like u but when i wanna play on my new ste it says:
Error Massage:
BG Error reading stage/ngu.def
Lybary error Massage: Sprite doesnt Exist: 0,1
Error in (BG 1)
HELP!!!
how do you make your stages work on mugen i tried mine and it said can't read
is the bitmap saved on ur pc, or is it a fire fox link. The question is not very clear as to what you've done or are asking. pm me the details.
Is possible RESOLUTION RAISES SCREEN and repeat the tutorial, please? The screen is imposible to see.
I think I need some help... I got this message, the name of the stage is "stageset":
Error message:
BG error reading stages/stageset.def
Library error message: Sprite doesn't exist: 1,0
Error in [BG 1]
I did everything you said but I try to test my stage out it says the sprite doesnt exisist!
yeah probably that,
hmm, it says 542x396
so what should my left/right bound be?
half that or something?
It's cool. I wrote it all out in the description.
is your bitmap 600 wide? because mugen just copies images that are too small to fill the empty screen space.
You probably have the bound left and bound right too small. What width is your pic?
hey what is the program you use i know the main one Mugen but the other to make the stage? what is called?
i've made a few stages but my latest stage has a problem...
when the fight starts the entire stage is black and all animatios freeze when the character moves...
help anybody???
my stage looks like a rainbow crashed on it why does the colours change?
I got an error message.
Error message:
BG error reading stages/Bedroom.def
Library error message: Sprite doesn't exist: 1,0
Error in [BG Speed Clouds]
and my speed clouds is this:
[BG Speed Clouds]
type = normal
spriteno = 1,0
start = 0, 226
velocity = -2,0
delta = .8, .75
mask = 1
tile = 1, 0
trans = add
what should I do to fix that?
There is a detailed step by step in the description if you can't follow the vid
myn cant get bigger it only can get to width to 441 and the height could go to 400 is that ok?
I read the def files with notepad. that is just an icon that is displayed because I have set notepad as the default program to open the def files. It may look different on your pc because I have a custom theme set on mine. If you right click any def file and click open with. then select notepad and then ok. Your def files will have a notepad icon.
What are the dimensions of your bitmap and did you delete everything under [BGM 1] in the stage0 .def?
it won't let me optimise the pic for some reason... is the fighter factory ultimate the right program?
where do you get the note pad with the stage deffinition because i dont have that.
what game is it that you downloaded or screenpack that you downloaded called
I like when you say center "centah" :D
Than for the tutorial, nice job.
How do I get rid of the pink on the let and right of the stage?
did you download the screenpack or the ready to play version
Never heard of that happening before. But it could be the bitmap you used was too small. It has to be at least 320 x 240 or else mugen will just fill in the the rest with blackness. Other than that you could try deleting the the numbers section at the bottom of the .def file.
it sais error message:
bg error reading stages/the name of my stage.def
library error message:sprite doesn't exist :0,0
error in [BG 1]
help me i still dont get it
There is no mention of Fighter Factory Ultimate in this tutorial. However I find google to be very useful whenever I need to find out something. Perhaps you could give that a try or may be use the normal fighter factory.
did you click the blue screen at the pallet screen?
4:19 hey!? u was have already def file ? how to do it ? def file :\
look above the x and y axis boxes in fighter factory on your bitmap where the 0,4 is and change it to 0,0
This worked really well, however, IDK what to do with my "homemade stage". It is so enlarged, that the background pillars don't even show up.
+わたしわしにがみです You have to resize the image before you make it into a sprite background. Meaning scale it in such a way that it fits into a mugen srreen, MUGEN doesn't scale the image for you, it takes a few tries but you'll know what size scale works best eventually
The image itself was already a 884x663. To scale it down any further would majorly pixelize it. Perhaps using a different image would suffice.
I have a question um idk if it tells but what do I do to get my sff file im having trouble with it
How did you get the .def file? I only had 2 files, the .act and the .sff
well i've tried but no success...:(
the image size is 600x395
i've tried bound L&R 95,135,200,etc.
i've tried playing with the bound high also but nothing...thanx anyway, im moving on to the next project:)
600 x 400 what? inch, mm, cent, pixel?
That's because the scale in your pic is off. You need to remember the mugen screen is only 240 high. So imagine a 240 box on your pic and think about where the chars will be then try resize your pic accordingly. It may take a few goes but you will get used to the scale
If you followed it exactly your mugen wouldn't shut down. Try reading the description if you can't follow the vid or pm me the pic you're trying to use and I'll do the stage for you.
when u open the picture in paint what do u save it as
sprite doesnt exist: 0,1
error i bg 1
what does it mean
@mdjmxt either you didn't convert it to 256 colors, or you didn't assign it the correct sprite number
i can't because the images in my computer he have the type .png and his not working
make sure its 600 wide, at least 240 high n then set the bound left n right is 130
I keep getting error missing camera info plz help!!
what website did you get it from
oops think I removed ur question. Erm to change a chars start point within a level, open the def file of the stage and scroll down to [StageInfo] and then look at zoffset =. that number is usually around 190. the higher it goes the lower the chars are. n the lower it goes the higher the chars are. So to fix ur prob make it 210 save it n keep changing the number till the chars match the floor
@Warrenz79 I think i should give up i did everything you did but i keep getting the error.
how do i turn my notepad into a "def" file because when i saved mine it saved as a text document
help anybody?
from where u get the def file u are using now
did ya put the sff in your main stages folder?
in fighter factory i try run current mugen but it telling me need to configure amugen first . do it in the tools/ Options . so how do i do that
+EShoguma Minazuki probably corrupted something. uninstall and reinstall a new one
Warrenz79 okay
i don't know what's a bitmap, can u explain me what it is? sorry for this stupid question :\
thnx this really helped me out
what u put on X??? and Y??? in
theres no def file only SFF file how to make a def file???????????
Well an amazing parralax stage with lots of animation is a little more complicated but yes this way is simple and is very easy and a nice way to begin adding your own touches to your mugen. Instead of coding 20 megabytes of sprites and animationn you are just making a stage out of a background image.
I don't think so. I think ya have to add each frame into a group or something to do it. Search around for other tutorials on moving stages.
open the def file and change the bound high but don't go above the height of the background bitmap. Or before you make the stage set the background bitmap to whatever height you want.
open your main mugen stages folder copy the stage0 def file and paste it into where ya have the bitmaps. Try reading the description if ya can't follow the vid ^_^
That error has nothing to do with fighter factory. It simply means there is no camera info in the def file you are using. If you use the def file I sent you you won't get that error.
but.....I got a prob....heres wat teh thing says:
Error message:
BG error reading stage/Cursor's Stage.def
Library error message Sprite doesn't exist 0,1
Error in [BG 1]
Do you put them in the "stages" folder?
if you listen to the 1st few sentences in the vid it clearly states make the stages out of jpgz. Open your pic in paint n resave it as a jpg
You should have 3 files of the same name in the folder you created for your bitmaps. .def .pcx and .sff. All you need to do is copy and paste the .def and the .sff into the folder you have all of the stages you've downloaded. Check the description as well. I wrote out the instructions too. If that doesn't help I'll pm you my email and you can send me the files and I'll fix them for you.
you probably didn't make the sff right or fill the def file in properly.
:( Error message: Missing camera info stages/Rav power.def WTF???
It does work. There is a step by step in the description if you can't follow the vid.
@Warrenz79 What version you have now.
Cool stage
Love your voice man...5/5
should be but you'll have to set the bound right n left to fit it, that's trial n error
what if its bigger...?
Hey I remember this tutorial from when I was a kid! Just wondering... where did you find that picture? It's pretty sweet lol
random lmage off google
Warrenz79 do you happen to have it by any chance still??
They are but this is just a major basic way of showing how it's done to craete a super simple stage from any jpg
THANX MEN GOOD TEACHING....
VERY CLEAR AND EASY VERY(83x)THANK YOU!
you most convert the picture first PCX i think and then you can use it if the image. if gets convertet wrong the picyure will look like a rainbow crash
No. The pic you use has to be 320 x 240. Any smaller and it won't work.
where do i get the stage0 .def file?
Just out of curiosity, are you still active?
open your pcx again and look above the x and y axis boxes in fighter factory on your bitmap where the 0 and 1 is and change it to 0,0, read the descri[tion if you can't follow the vid
where you from?
How do you edit PCX files?
@xmenbio
just download the stagemaker,, its on mugen-infantry,,,, the best foramat is 1000 to 720,,, but u have to know wich version of mugen u got! that everything!
make sure the bound right n left in the def file is 130.
I'm sorry. I'm German and it's pretty exhausting listening to that for a while. ^^
You might have deleted or left out something in the def file. Read the description if you can't follow the vid
@ChubboTheHamster i wrote out all the steps in the description if ur having trouble with the vid
@VERBATIME1 use the stage0 def file. The stage that comes with mugen. I said it in the vid and wrote it in the description. ^_^
There is a step by step in the description if you can't follow the vid. you have to delete the bg stuff at the bottom of the def file.
Yes FF classic will do the job. Take your time and you'll get the hang of it. If you have any problems PM a link to the pic and I'll do the stage.
It still wont work for me
Cheers Mr. Omnipotence. It's the only accent I have. That being an Irish one.
