The more I listen to Blind Guardian, the more I love them. They are one of my all time favourite bands, and I'm not even that big a fan of metal. But ever since I first heard them six years ago, I've been a fan.
Apart from everything else about this epic album, those vocals on this record alone, are probably the most unearthly and unbelievably great vocals I've ever heard in my life. Both the layering, and Hansi's voice on its own. Among my top 10 albums for sure. Every song is killer, the production is stellar and powerful yet retains that amazing rawness at the same time, and the covers which are not here (cuz bonus tracks) are excellent too, especially their take on Queen's Spread Your Wings.
@MrDR7no Hansi's voice reminds me of Twisted Sister's Dee Snider's voice on the up-tempo parts where he's scream-singing. (I like Dee's voice, so it's a compliment.😒)
I agree that this is a legendary album but it can't kill Imagination, Opera nor Wheels of Time for me. I can't even decide which album is my favorite one between these four hahaha. :P
From this album on, I would consider all albums except for A Twist in the Myth legendary... Though A Night at the Opera is included mostly because of And Then There Was Silence. That alone makes an album legendary.
That's how I like Blind Guardian's cover arts: a simple (even childish) yet symbolic drawing, the band logo a little bit blurred, no fucking effects, no fucking photoshop. And the music speaks for it, and fits perfect to it. That's all.

With the exception of three songs, I haven't heard any of this album before. Here's what I think about the songs from this listen. 1. Great album opener. I have a feeling that it might be a highlight. The beginning felt a bit misleading, kind of like Majesty does, but that's a good way to catch the listener off-guard. 2. Even better than Time What Is Time. 3. This is a short song, but I love how it shows a softer side to the album. 4. Another great song from the album. Slower than the first two songs, but it trades its speed for more symphonic elements. 5. Tanelorn. That's a name I first heard in a song from At the Edge of Time, so I thought that maybe there is some sort of connection. Whether that's true or not, that doesn't change the fact that this song is epic. It makes you feel like you're a part of the story when you listen to it. Easily the best song so far! 6. Seemed to be the darkest song on the album. It's also one of my favorites on here. This whole album just seems to be getting better and better with each song so far. 7. Ah, yes, the single from the album. I liked it a lot more than I ever expected it to, since when I had Memories of a Time to Come I thought the song was overrated. Upon hearing it here, now I understand why the song is loved so much. 8. I always liked this song. Picks up from the first Bard's Song nicely now that I've heard it in context. The ending kind of drags on, but other than that, no complaints. 9. Not much to say here. It's just an interlude. The bagpipe melody is nice, but I didn't feel like it set up the final song that well. 10. Somewhere Far Beyond is absolutely incredible! It's the best song on the whole album, and one of my favorite songs by them overall. The band couldn't have ended this disc in a more perfect way.
Possibly one of the greatest power metal albuns of all time. It never gets old, each song has a huge charisma and the thematic is just magnificent. Truly a complete work of art.
Every last second of this is pure, concentrated awesomeness. Not one song is boring or lazily written. I love most of their stuff, but this album is really kicking my ass right now.
It's fucking beautiful. This magical band is loaded with beautiful Spiritual truths in their music catalog. It's very deep so you have to look beyond what people tell you what the songs mean. Don't follow "labels" of what other people say the songs mean as the mind can only label things at the surface of images and is blind, as these songs all mean YOU in many deep ways that the left-brain thinking ego mind of thought cannot see or understand. In one of my Ayahuasca ceremonies after total surrender of the ego as I surpassed the illusions of death, eye was given the sword of light from the Universe. The sword of Light came through me in magical beauty as I was downloaded massive amounts of knowledge love and wisdom through my heart chakra. This magical sword is far beyond how you see a sword in a picture in the illusions of images as this sword is multi-dimensional as I became "one" with the sword, the sword was me and I was the sword, as ONE in infinite beauty and magic. The sword of Light is only to be used for love and light and becoming in full awareness of my Soul purposes and missions on this planet to help awaken humanity out of the countless illusions of society. Not a sword that can ever be used to harm anyone or anything. And through that experience I was taken back to this album that I listened to as a young man in the early 1990's, and Mother Ayahuasca showed me this Blind Guardian album cover and she said to me: " You see Robert, You have always been one of the chosen ones, and you will always be one of the chosen ones" .. and she showed me what a sword really means (that has absolutely nothing to do with what silly humans think a sword means as the blind human mind takes everything beautiful and sacred and twists it in countless lies).. The album cover is an Ayahuasca circle, with the Shaman playing Ayahuasca icaro's at the top through some kind of flute in the shape of an Ayahuasca vine on his chest, the flute at the bottom pointing to the light at the center of the circle. And he's elevated above everyone else sitting on a stool and wearing a crown (not just a hood like the others). And he also has a condor sitting on his shoulder (the highest flying bird that also has the ability to shift between Spiritual dimensions). In Ayahuasca art you will see the condor depicted quite often, and for infinite good reasons. Ayahuasca is the oldest and purest, and is by far the most effective form of Spiritual practice on the planet. Nothing could be more obvious as you listen to this album ;-) I so clearly remember as a child listening to heavy metal during the 1980's, & entire worlds opened up for me, bands such as Iron Maiden, Testament and other great bands such as "Death" and Queensryche ( "Roads To Madness" by Queensryche for example is an Eternal Spiritual Truths classic), etc. A little later on in the early 1990's I got into the beauty of Blind Guardian with their beautiful album 'Somewhere Far Beyond". So many beautiful things that fake bands like metallica and ac/dc could never come close to offering. I never understood when people would tell me that Heavy Metal music is far too heavy to get into and too overwhelming. I always laughed, since I was a child, how people would tell me that this isn't music, but only loud cannons firing. I ALWAYS laughed as they tried so hard to sway me, but could never sway me an inch. From family members to friends to pathetic pastors in churches (and let me tell you that you will NEVER find more fake people on the planet than fear-monger pastors and priests in churches), as nobody hates our beautiful Mother Earth and Nature and divides people's more with hatred than pastors in churches, and they mostly hate themselves. And I never once cared for their blind and pathetic opinions, I always laughed hysterically inside. I always laughed hysterically how they couldn't "get it." . Because to me, when listening to heavy metal, it was always a blissful sweet symphony of beauty !! For me, it was always so soft, and wonderful, so welcoming, and Magical !! I feel so sorry for the humans that have no capability to ever understand the beauty of real heavy metal music, because heavy metal has so many beautiful Spiritual messages from the infinite Universe that the blind ego-based mind of duality is afraid to see, and afraid to understand. Mother Ayahuasca showed me in infinite ways how Heavy Metal music was so vital and so beautiful in so many magical ways for my Spiritual growth. And this magical band of beauty, Blind Guardian, was absolutely Massive and monumental for my Spiritual journey of the Universe of be-ing and infinite truths of beauty of Light and Spirit. ;-) .. Easily their second best album, after Nightfall. Recently Hansi apparently said that he thinks "Distant Memories" off of their new album is the most beautiful song they've ever written; and while I'm tempted to agree, because it's an amazing song, the prize still goes to Theatre of Pain for me.

Apart from everything else about this epic album, those vocals on this record alone, are probably the most unearthly and unbelievably great vocals I've ever heard in my life. Both the layering, and Hansi's voice on its own. Among my top 10 albums for sure. Every song is killer, the production is stellar and powerful yet retains that amazing rawness at the same time, and the covers which are not here (cuz bonus tracks) are excellent too, especially their take on Queen's Spread Your Wings.

Hansi's voice reminds me of Twisted Sister's Dee Snider's voice on the up-tempo parts where he's scream-singing.

This is a legendary album. "Tales of the Twilight World" is great, but this just kills everything.
I agree that this is a legendary album but it can't kill Imagination, Opera nor Wheels of Time for me. I can't even decide which album is my favorite one between these four hahaha. :P
This is the best album by far altough their best song ever is Banish from the sanctuary, better than Lord of the rings and bard song.
From this album on, I would consider all albums except for A Twist in the Myth legendary... Though A Night at the Opera is included mostly because of And Then There Was Silence. That alone makes an album legendary.
Personally prefer Tales. Never really got into Somewhere far Beyond, somehow.

Oh, everyone's grateful for a track listing regardless of whether they need it or not :)
One of the best power metal albums!it amaze me everytime,even after 10 years of listening.
With the exception of three songs, I haven't heard any of this album before. Here's what I think about the songs from this listen.
1. Great album opener. I have a feeling that it might be a highlight. The beginning felt a bit misleading, kind of like Majesty does, but that's a good way to catch the listener off-guard.
2. Even better than Time What Is Time.
3. This is a short song, but I love how it shows a softer side to the album.
4. Another great song from the album. Slower than the first two songs, but it trades its speed for more symphonic elements.
5. Tanelorn. That's a name I first heard in a song from At the Edge of Time, so I thought that maybe there is some sort of connection. Whether that's true or not, that doesn't change the fact that this song is epic. It makes you feel like you're a part of the story when you listen to it. Easily the best song so far!
6. Seemed to be the darkest song on the album. It's also one of my favorites on here. This whole album just seems to be getting better and better with each song so far.
7. Ah, yes, the single from the album. I liked it a lot more than I ever expected it to, since when I had Memories of a Time to Come I thought the song was overrated. Upon hearing it here, now I understand why the song is loved so much.
8. I always liked this song. Picks up from the first Bard's Song nicely now that I've heard it in context. The ending kind of drags on, but other than that, no complaints.
9. Not much to say here. It's just an interlude. The bagpipe melody is nice, but I didn't feel like it set up the final song that well.
10. Somewhere Far Beyond is absolutely incredible! It's the best song on the whole album, and one of my favorite songs by them overall. The band couldn't have ended this disc in a more perfect way.
Very late response, but yes, Quest for Tanelorn and the one from ATEOT is about Tanelorn in Michael Moorcock's literature universe.
Possibly one of the greatest power metal albuns of all time. It never gets old, each song has a huge charisma and the thematic is just magnificent. Truly a complete work of art.

One of the most enjoyable albums from the amazing Blind Guardian's discography.
The Quest for Tanelorn... so fucking epic!
It's fucking beautiful. This magical band is loaded with beautiful Spiritual truths in their music catalog. It's very deep so you have to look beyond what people tell you what the songs mean. Don't follow "labels" of what other people say the songs mean as the mind can only label things at the surface of images and is blind, as these songs all mean YOU in many deep ways that the left-brain thinking ego mind of thought cannot see or understand.
In one of my Ayahuasca ceremonies after total surrender of the ego as I surpassed the illusions of death, eye was given the sword of light from the Universe. The sword of Light came through me in magical beauty as I was downloaded massive amounts of knowledge love and wisdom through my heart chakra. This magical sword is far beyond how you see a sword in a picture in the illusions of images as this sword is multi-dimensional as I became "one" with the sword, the sword was me and I was the sword, as ONE in infinite beauty and magic. The sword of Light is only to be used for love and light and becoming in full awareness of my Soul purposes and missions on this planet to help awaken humanity out of the countless illusions of society. Not a sword that can ever be used to harm anyone or anything.
And through that experience I was taken back to this album that I listened to as a young man in the early 1990's, and Mother Ayahuasca showed me this Blind Guardian album cover and she said to me: " You see Robert, You have always been one of the chosen ones, and you will always be one of the chosen ones" .. and she showed me what a sword really means (that has absolutely nothing to do with what silly humans think a sword means as the blind human mind takes everything beautiful and sacred and twists it in countless lies)..
The album cover is an Ayahuasca circle, with the Shaman playing Ayahuasca icaro's at the top through some kind of flute in the shape of an Ayahuasca vine on his chest, the flute at the bottom pointing to the light at the center of the circle. And he's elevated above everyone else sitting on a stool and wearing a crown (not just a hood like the others). And he also has a condor sitting on his shoulder (the highest flying bird that also has the ability to shift between Spiritual dimensions). In Ayahuasca art you will see the condor depicted quite often, and for infinite good reasons. Ayahuasca is the oldest and purest, and is by far the most effective form of Spiritual practice on the planet. Nothing could be more obvious as you listen to this album ;-)
I so clearly remember as a child listening to heavy metal during the 1980's, & entire worlds opened up for me, bands such as Iron Maiden, Testament and other great bands such as "Death" and Queensryche ( "Roads To Madness" by Queensryche for example is an Eternal Spiritual Truths classic), etc. A little later on in the early 1990's I got into the beauty of Blind Guardian with their beautiful album 'Somewhere Far Beyond". So many beautiful things that fake bands like metallica and ac/dc could never come close to offering. I never understood when people would tell me that Heavy Metal music is far too heavy to get into and too overwhelming. I always laughed, since I was a child, how people would tell me that this isn't music, but only loud cannons firing.
I ALWAYS laughed as they tried so hard to sway me, but could never sway me an inch. From family members to friends to pathetic pastors in churches (and let me tell you that you will NEVER find more fake people on the planet than fear-monger pastors and priests in churches), as nobody hates our beautiful Mother Earth and Nature and divides people's more with hatred than pastors in churches, and they mostly hate themselves. And I never once cared for their blind and pathetic opinions, I always laughed hysterically inside. I always laughed hysterically how they couldn't "get it." . Because to me, when listening to heavy metal, it was always a blissful sweet symphony of beauty !!
For me, it was always so soft, and wonderful, so welcoming, and Magical !! I feel so sorry for the humans that have no capability to ever understand the beauty of real heavy metal music, because heavy metal has so many beautiful Spiritual messages from the infinite Universe that the blind ego-based mind of duality is afraid to see, and afraid to understand.
Mother Ayahuasca showed me in infinite ways how Heavy Metal music was so vital and so beautiful in so many magical ways for my Spiritual growth. And this magical band of beauty, Blind Guardian, was absolutely Massive and monumental for my Spiritual journey of the Universe of be-ing and infinite truths of beauty of Light and Spirit. ;-) .. Mother Ayahuasca showed me how my Soul always chose the right bands and the right music, far beyond my mind. Easily their second best album, after Nightfall. Recently Hansi apparently said that he thinks "Distant Memories" off of their new album is the most beautiful song they've ever written; and while I'm tempted to agree, because it's an amazing song, the prize still goes to Theatre of Pain for me.

This album take me back to my teenage years again.
Just a fantastic album. Slight weakness is it's one of their shorter ones, but still a good three quarters of an hour.
