On the historical and theological aspects of Christianity in the context of the catholic church, here's my submission,
(1) Christianity began as a sect of Judaism. The tag 'Christian' was given to this sect by others/gentiles which stuck and as the religion spread it came to be known as Christianity.
(2) Christianity has nothing like the Sharia of Islam, the Old Testament does provide the Ten Commandments which the Christians are expected to follow.
(3) The New Testament overrides the Old Testament wherever there are contradictions.
(4) The rest of the theological teachings are provided by the magisterium of the Catholic Church which was inherited from Judaism.
(5) In the first 300 hundred years, Christianity survived and spread despite persecution, while Islam, in its first 300 years, was spread by conquests, coercion and by force.
(6) The Catholic Church along with the Eastern Orthodox Church are the oldest and they are the only churches that have legitimate apostolic succession from Jesus and his disciples.
(7) St. Peter on whom Jesus promised to build the Church (Mathew 16:18) is the first bishop of Rome hence the first Pope of the catholic church.
(8) The Catholic Church is the oldest surviving institution with the Roman bishop as the administrative head starting from St. Peter himself to Pope Francis today. The Church has a mixed history of some great Pope's and some terrible ones in its 2000 year old history.
(9) The Catholic Church is a truly universal Church which comprises 24 different rites. The Roman rite is the biggest.
(10) In the catholic tradition, worship is reserved for the triune God alone. This happens during the Holy Mass. The place of worship is the altar of the Church. This was the tradition that can be traced back to the earliest Christians. The magisterium of the catholic church canonised the Bible as a reaction to the many forged, theologically inconsistent books that started to appear a few centuries after Christ's passing. It was important to have an authentic list of scriptures that could be read during the mass. So, the Holy Mass came first, the Bible was compiled later. Indeed, such was the importance of the Holy Mass among the early Christians that it necessitated the canonisation of the Bible.
(11) The Church has many large organisations under it like the Frnciscans, the Dominicans, the Jesuits, the Carmelites, the Missionaries of Charity who are dedicated to the mission of the church and society in general.
(12) Many such Catholic institutions also have a tradition of holding charismatic retreats where people do go for healing and miracles do take place.
(13) Also, we learn from Church history that the holy people of the Church had an important place in the church. Hence, we have the tradition of keeping relics. It was also believed that martyred/deceased holy fathers of the church were in heaven in the presence of God. Hence, it was an established tradition among early Christians to seek their intercession because of their proximity with God. Just as the holy fathers of the church were important, mother Mary had an even more important standing in the church by virtue of her being chosen as the mother of the human incarnation of God in flesh. So, half of the prayer Hail Mary comes from the scripture (Luke 1:28). The other half seeks her intercession.
(14) The magisterium of the Church adopted the concept of 'just war'. In the biblical context it was considered ok to wage 'just war' in certain situations. So, as a reaction to the Islamist expansion and attrocities against Christians we had the crusades. We also had the Spanish reconquista in which the Christian lands were reclaimed from the Islamists. The battle of Lapento, the battle of Vienna in which the Islamist Ottomans were defeated and their Westward expansion was stopped for good. We need to appreciate the Catholic Church's role in galvanising various Christian kingdoms against Islamic forces. If the Church had not played its part, much of Europe may have been subjugated into accepting Islam. With Islam firmly established in Europe, rest of the colonial world would have also followed suit and we would all be following primitive 7th century Sharia laws with burqa clad women in our societies.
