Lovely video very happy memories of Butlins Filey although I never actually visited the site during the late 70s and early to mid 80s I often holidayed at primrose valley next door as my late parents had 2 static caravans on Primrose Valley and I remember some features of Butlins Filey such as the chair lifts and the road down to the beach and from certain parts of Primrose valley you could see the chalets at Butlins Filey and I recall seeing the site in the late 80s after it had closed down a very sad sight indeed

@@josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 Yes I did very much enjoy it.My Mother and Father first went to Butlins Filey after the War in 1946/7 following the Big (Dance Bands) We as kids from about 1955, up till 1970.I have all the Badges from the 40's 50's and 60's and Dance festival badges from Filey and loads of B/W Photo's.We stayed up at Flamborough last week and drove past the Old Camp feeling very upset.!!!! Hi Lindsay & Peter, sounds as if you have tons of happy memories of your own over so many years. I always enjoy the film "Holiday Camp" with Jack Warner. I believe the outdoor scenes were filmed at the Filey camp though the railway station was somewhere else. Thank you for commenting and yes the film becomes more and more important to my family as the years roll by.

@@josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 Yes Joseph quite correct. The Railway Station at the start of the Film is actually Sandsend, long gone, up the coast passed Whitby, the track ran close to the cliffs!!At the end of the Film You can see the Old East Yorkshire Buses and Bodies Coaches which ran out of Bridlington.Hazel Court ,who won the Beauty Competition, became the Famous "Horror Queen" and her Baby in the Film was Dinah Sheridan and Jimmy Hanleys child!!!! My Mother and Father watched the Film being made and were in the Dance Hall when Diana Dors was Jitterbuging!!!Also, near the end ,some shoots are at Flamborough Head and the Cliffs, which are really, still the same.Great Film, which I watch with some sadness at times. After this Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison made the "Huggett" Films with some of the same actors. There is another Film "When the Bough Breaks" with Bill Owen and Pat Roc (who actually made a guest apperance in Holiday Camp) Filmed at Butlins, but I think this was Clacton.Kind Regards.Peter Holden.Thanks.

Great film. I was born in 1970 and lived in London. Went yearly to Butlins Bognor Regis, from when I was 3 years old, so I remember the old Butlins. Never went to Filey, but always as a kid, when looking through the Butlins Brochure, used to say, why can't we go there one year. It looked and was so much bigger than Bognor. Of course it closed when I was 13, so never made it. Thankfully Bognor is still with us.

Legendary bit of cinematic history, First time I passed Filey was back in 1989 a while after it had closed, it was a sad picture, and resigned to the past like so many places. Butlins has a few sites as did Pontins in those days. I remember taking a school holiday at Butlins Barry Island in the mid 70's, Bognor too and even Minehead n the 90's with my first born and my parents. Those days prior 60's and 70's were tough times, but also great times of freedom. The days vents calendar dictated what one would do, but like always we made our own entertainment. The sites were clean as your movie shows, the accommodation whilst basic was always well maintained and looked after. Those days are long gone and will never return as society has changed and that of our standards too... I'd say these places never lost their appeal, but the visitors changed and so did their expectations, and well run sites were badly mismanaged too... In truth we were very lucky we were given time to live our lives, summers were long, food was fresh and TV was still for many still in Black and White..

A decade or so later when I joined the railway (not locally), I rode the camp branch line in its final year and remember the land trains meeting the real ones before disappearing into the underpass. Mine and my cousins family went there approximately 1966. My uncle , cousin, and I went on the cable car. As we started moving , the wind started to build up and the cable car started to swing from side to side . The cars seemed to go quite fast . The higher we got , the stronger the wind blew. Suddenly, at the very highest point of the journey , the car stopped dead. , swinging violently from side to side. We had to wait until they finally started the cars moving again...quite a while afterwards. When we eventually got back, we found out the cars had been stopped because of very high winds. No one knew we were on it. Never again...

Hi Mark, thanks for commenting. I've seen a few of the "what it's like today" videos and they are very interesting. I suppose the area is being used by holidaymakers but in a slightly different way.

When DVD came out, I used to buy transfers of Butlin's home movies on eBay.
It was great to see all the familiar childhood places again; but what a disappointment when the same annoying kid kept butting-in!
