  • Gravel cycling is a lot of fun regardless of what speed you're riding. But, despite this, everyone wants to cycle a little bit faster, don't they? Regardless of how fast you ride, aerodynamics play a huge part in speed - better aerodynamics let you ride your bike faster and further! With this in mind, Ridley have released the Ridley Kanzo Fast. Only 4 watts slower than their dedicated aero road bike, the Noah Fast, this might well be the fastest gravel bike in the world.

      Exactly the quandary I have now. I have mountain bike I don't really use apart from the odd gravel path or benign Forrest lane. I want a new road bike was thinking of the TcR Advance pro with built in power meters. But also want to do some light touring next year, and only have money for one big upgrade. Argh... Also just watch Wales in one day on the TCR that can take 32mm tires. What do I go for

Even though power is a product of force multiplied by speed, speed is still measured in distance devided by time (meters per second or kilometers per hour)! But no, I spend most of my time, this year, riding in the mountains, gorges, valleys and the plateau and descents above the eastern Range ( 1000 to 800 meter descents to the sea) Due to steep mountain sides, heavy seasonal monsoons and in years like this, many typhoons, the government has paved over most single lane forest and remote valley roads ( there are fire roads that are off limits... I need to organize some event rides!).. These are rough concrete pavers but after heavy rains the side roads often get washed over with sand/silt/clay/ gravel, after recent Typhoons, land slides would have required all but pro road bikes to push over .

      Yes, it looks beautiful and aggressive; I guess the only issue is that the max tyres on 650b are 46mm which is less than your Adventure. Are you buying the same size in the Kanzo Fast? I noticed that the geometry is quite different. I tested the Adventure a few days ago but unfortunately they only had a size Medium and I'm a Small or possibly an Extra Small. I've been looking at this and the Exploro Racemax. Delivery quoted for UK was 5 months...but if you just buy the frame then it's only 1-2 months.

    Great channel, great videos! Quick question to which I cannot get a straight answer... if a gravel bike is a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike, what is a hybrid bike? I've been told countless times that a hybrid bike "isn't the coolest bike out there" because it's a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike, but a gravel bike is great because it's a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike.
    So... what is the difference between a gravel bike and a hybrid bike? My best guess is it seems that the hybrid bike is set up closer to a mountain bike, typically with a suspension front fork, often a suspension seat post, and MTB style straight handlebars. Where as a gravel bike seems set up closer to a road bike with a hardtail, stiff frame, and non-suspension front fork with drop style handlebars. Both seem to have 38 to 40mm tires that are somewhere in between road and mountain bikes tires. If that is correct, would a hybrid bike be a better choice for a rider that does 60% trails and 40% road... or even 70% to 30% trails vs asphalt?

    • @DEFKNIGHT
      @DEFKNIGHT 3 роки тому

      I guess it depends on the trails really. If they are rutted and the rocks are large or the trail particularly bumpy with roots and occasional drops and jumps, I'd say go for the hybrid. But if your trails are flat with rare obstacles like the former, I'd say go for the cross bike. As far as asphalt is concerned, the cross bike will obviously be quicker as there is no power loss due to squat and the cross bike will be much lighter as there aren't any extras like shocks and the like slowing you further with much higher weight and bad aero. I'd say the only benefit to the hybrid on the street is comfort, as well for the trails. But for speeds sake, I'd sacrifice comfort to that degree any day for speed. Plus you could always go bigger with tires and still be far lighter than a hybrid and gain a little extra comfort.

    [edit] I wrote that at the beginning of the vid. I still hate disc brakes, especially when I hear that “herrnk”. I mostly ride SS/fixed and already have a perfectly fine geared bike that has hydraulic 105 discs and room for 32c tires for my lazy days. This thing is just so much dork, all in one, so very well done... I want it, even just as a collector’s piece. I want two: one to keep in a glass case and one to beat the crap out of in the trails and city streets.

    This is the first gravel bike that looks good to me, but I still don't get gravel riding) I guess, I should try it prior to judging)) The problem is - I know for sure, that sitting position with road handlebar is less stable, than a normal flat bar, and you don't want to lose handling stability on a loose surface. And secondly, you can fit 28 inch road wheels with gravel tires to any mtb hardtail, even older 26 inch frames will take them. But I guess I'm overthinking it) Gravel has some style to it, for sure.

    Aerodinamics is a thing for sure. On this order:
    1 - Rider position
    2 - Rider clothes
    3 - Bike
    There are no tangible differences between tubular frame bikes and aero frame bikes at speeds below 40 km/h. So, an aero gravel bike is pure waste of money in terms of aerodinamics. But if you want to make "one for all" and your average road bike speed exceeds 40 km/h a aero gravel bike will help you on the tarmac. Although a pure road bike puts you in a more slammed position. When i first saw the Fast i thought 💭 Man!!! I need to have it!!! BUT, there are many thinks i don’t like. You can’t chance anything, because the bike is not made for personal options. You can’t change the bar, you can’t change the stem, you can’t change the seat post and so on. Next big minus IN MY OPINION is that you can’t choose it with two chainrings. All in all i think i go with the new 2021 Kanzo Fast. For me it’s better to have options in changing things...

    Currently in a mid life not-really-a-crisis-but-want-something-different moment. I currently have a Cannondale Supersix HiMod, which for blasting around the roads for upto 100 miles is awesome but part of me wants to do stupid long rides and go off road a bit during long rides too, so more road bike that can handle offroad rather than dragging my MTB out to do gnarly stuff. A bike that I could stuff a set of Zipp303's or similar on, maybe rig some mudguards on it and go Randoneuring on it or just have some fun on the road on a Wednesday night with the lads doing dumb things like sprinting for signs.

    Wait... The rear internal gear hub??? My Tern X30h folding bike does have one to make it 3*10 while running a “1x”, it does do the job great. But sram does not make them anymore, almost thought it’s obsolete now...

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 4 роки тому +1

      It's a bit different from other geared hubs; as far as I know none uses planetary gears (which can have lower losses, and can more easily switch under load than other types of gearing arrangements). The real question for me is reliability, and it's definitely too soon to answer it!

    • @xuchenglin6256
      @xuchenglin6256 4 роки тому

      dlevi67 I believe maybe your information is not quite adequate? (Or mine if I’m wrong) There do exist gear hub with planatary gears. And I believe mine (SRAM dual drive 3) is just one of them... check this link ( www.triketech.com/Drivetrain/dd3.html ) and it explains how this thing works alongside the chart. The durability is not a problem since it’s sealed, but weight is a little problem if you are going competitive. My tern x30h folder is basically a compact road bike, I ride almost equal fast on both bikes, but the rear hub do come a little heavy (970g), make it 10kg. Shift under load or still is okay, if you are interested in playing with some internal gear hub, give it a try, it’s cool and can provide you some good gear ratio.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 4 роки тому

      @@xuchenglin6256 I didn't know of this one - so I stand corrected, although if as you say it's out of production, then maybe I wasn't completely wrong...
      I don't think that the question about reliability is answered - yes, planetary gear trains can be reliable; is this one? It depends on how it has been designed, engineered and manufactured, and I haven't the foggiest about any of them.
      Since you mention weight as an issue: Classified doesn't quote it explicitly, but they say it's "comparable to the difference in weight between a Shimano GRX Di2 2x and 1x train + rear hub", so around 500 grams - much lighter than the SRAM/Sachs one (which however is 3 speed, so a bit more complicated) classified-cycling.cc/product/

    • @xuchenglin6256
      @xuchenglin6256 4 роки тому

      dlevi67 yes as I said I almost thought the era of internal gear hub has passed...
      As to the reliability, those internal gear hubs including others have already exists for a long time, mostly used on touring bikes, at that time no gravel yet... and trikes, and folding bikes. They build some good reputation for zero mantainance and good durability and reliability, almost impossible to see a failure, the downside is if they were went down, it’s impossible to fix it on the road... A little dig into the old internet you can find a lot of information.
      Worth mentioning there’s also a brand nuvinci that makes gear-less or “CVT” gear hub which within the range you have unlimited gear ratio choices, definitely you could find the best one suit you for every scenario.
      My point is if you are interested, why not get one and make a build? Those things are not main stream in “cycling” world but it’s cool. Now you can still get the sram ones from eBay or something, with a relatively cheap price. Those new classified ones are cool but I believe it’s not gonna be wallet friendly. So why not just give it a try with minimal cost, it’s almost the same from a use perspective. The sram one can be paired with drop bar STI levers, as I believe with most others, my folding bike just runs this setup. Those things are kind of unique but could be interesting and fun.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 4 роки тому

      @@xuchenglin6256 You seem to be missing a point here: the fact that _some_ planetary hubs are reliable does NOT _in any way_ mean that this one is. The basic design of a car has been the same for about a century; some cars are very reliable, others break down every other day. It comes down to design (in detail, not the general principle), engineering, and manufacturing - we know nothing about these for the Classified hub.
      CVT has other problems (e.g. losses). And to be honest, I'm really not interested in spending hundreds of £/€/$ (it's not "relatively cheap" - you need to rebuild a complete wheel, and change cassette, chain and front rings if not cranks and BB) and hours of time for an experiment when my standard 2x (or 3x for my old MTB) works perfectly well for my purposes.

    I guess 'aero is the king' has become quite uncontroversial fact among bike manufacturers, so maybe in the future all frames will be aero frames with wind tunnels and CFD being a norm for testing any new design.
