I bet the live versions of Let it Bleed are longer and even better. Wish they would sell the pill box of this song as a merch item so I could decorate my medicine cabinet so when guess would look at it they would think I have meds that say “let it bleed”

First saw them at Middlesbrough town hall early nineties..Met Jason and the band. And they signed my 7inch single. Was about fifty people in the crowd. No one doing anything like this.

I'm a fan, and am looking forward to tomorrow night's show at the Roundhouse. There's no questioning J Spaceman's ability to layer and build music. But my goodness he's been writing the same "I'm not good enough for you" lyrics for thirty years. He should take a lyric writing course, or even an English literature course, to broaden his reference points. He's phoning this in.
Mildly interesting snark but 1:45 in, not sure i agree. At least, i have the sense of a musician talking directly to his audience, maybe it's just the mood i'm in. Not sure i have picked up this vibe elsewhere in his work except this album, i feel like in a way a more omniscient register is used. Moreover, i heavily relate to the ideas in the lyrics so far.
Yes love songs including love songs are common - and yet might be considered evergreen despite or even because of cliche. That said, usually i prefer to tune out once i think a band or artist is just milking the name with no fresh inspiration. I understand your resistance to a played out feeling, but i feel like there's something fresh to appreciate here, and i do appreciate it. Especially since i don't think it's been easy for artists to survive the culture shock of streaming and not paying for music. I personally see reasons to be grateful.
And i'm curious. I think this record wants to connect with its audience, but it is also conscious of or acknowledges its alienation, or something like that. The gap between what is hoped for and the reality? Mind you, i'm not even halfway through, just heavily depressed and empathetic towards the songwriting. This is just my initial impression.
Does "phoning it in" always have to be bad anyway? And isn't it better than nothing? (Noting in some cases i would say that sleeping dogs should lie. I feel like that axiom doesn't quite look right, but i'm too tired and glum to fix it.) i dunno. Many thoughts about trying to personally connect through music in virtual space and how this experience, being algorithmic among other things, is unlike anything that went before.

@@mothratemporalradio517 That's a really interesting take, and i'm glad you're getting what you need from it. I think the style of his songwriting now - mostly shorter songs, with the singing higher in the mix and definitely more of a focal (vocal) point - draw my attention to his lyrics much more than they used to. The singing used to be almost incidental and scene setting compared to the musical dynamics.
The first three albums all feel like that to me, and also like an extension of Spacemen 3, so I suppose it could be as simple as being a fan of older versus newer work. One of my favourite albums is 'a storm in heaven' by Verve. However, I can't stand the singer songwriter direction Richard Ashcroft (JP's nemesis) took 'The' Verve in from Urban Hymns onwards, as it diminished the elements of their music I liked best. Maybe it's similar with Spiritualized!
It's funny, Jason is one of my favourite musicians but I totally agree that his lyrics are technically weak. They are even repetitive across songs, as there are so many reused phrases throughout his work (e.g., "take good care of it", "sweet heart, sweet light", "all my thoughts are of you", "coming home", "damaged", etc.). And yet, I wouldn't change it for the world. It's awesome listening to a new J Spaceman song and hearing his distinctive lyrics, like reuniting with an old friend. And furthermore, his lyrics are more meaningful to me than almost every other lyricist out there. Lyrics in so many of his songs (e.g., The Prize, Won't Get to Heaven, Ladies and Gents, Medication) will stay with me forever.
@@vinnieFTW couldn't agree more - what's often described as "trite" or "weak" lyrics just keeps hitting the emotional mark for me, and the repetitive vocabulary indeed feels like reuniting with an old friend. The very simple lyrics in Won't get to heaven and Don't just do something (and others) are immensely meaningful to me
