the line "when they pulled me apart" does reference taylor's "cancellation" back in 2016 when she had to literally disappear for a year when things got really bad, so you are correct on that!

Taylor said that about this song:
"I thought: What if not all these feelings are about the same person? And if I’m writing about very different situations, one is about love, one is about a work thing that hurts a lot, and another is about a kind of relationship that I consider family, but it hurts."

Personally, I don’t believe that Folklore is as fictional as people say it is. The sadness was very much real at the time. At this point, Taylor was alone in quarantine dealing with the betrayal of Scott Borschetta selling her masters. She wraps the sadness up in relationship metaphors, but the feeling behind many of the songs is not fictional. So while Taylor was in a good place with Joe, she was dealing with a lot of sadness, anger, and betrayal with her work. I think those feelings drive the mood of Folklore.

"When they Pulled me apart" her cancellation in 2016. " but what you did was just as dark" is about Scott Borchetta, that she trusted but betrayed her by selling her entire music catalog

Think of a novel written with alternate endings. Hoax would be the sad ending. And remember when Taylor said, in a laugh, that in spite of being happy her ability to write sad breakup songs "Was still there"? She also dips into mental health issues, especially suicide ideation in Hoax. The Lakes is the happy ending in a novel with alternate endings.

I really enjoyed your whole folklore reaction. It's kind of the end of the standard edition album. Hoax is great song. Can't wait for the lakes and then dive into evermore.
Yes, This song is personal for taylor, it's actually about her previous record label and 🛴 who betrayed her, stealing her life's work from her. That's what she's saying in the song, she wants her life's work back and "no other sadness in the world" could ease or replace that pain. It's an interesting word play, bc her first 6 studio albums which are stolen are basically about her life, and her misery, pain, heartbreak, breakups and overall they're all sad albums. She wrote a lot of break-up songs, sad songs. So calling them as sadness is really cool. You'll see the same thing in the song the lakes, she calls her lyrics music, all the sad songs as elegies (which means A poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead.)
Obviously in the bridge she talks about how this whole situation all her music, her sleepless nights, her best laid plan, her life's work being stolen hurts her as much as it hurt back in 2016 when the whole world torn her apart. Taylorisoverparty was trending no1 all over Twitter. And then she had to disappear for a year.
Obviously it took a huge toll on her mental health.

It took some time but now I really love Peace and Hoax. Now they are some of my faves from Folklore. I'm happy you're doing The Lakes as well. And I can't wait for Evermore. :)

Loved your reaction as always) I think in this album, even though it is like a collection of fictional stories, almost every story has some "Taylor" in it. As if she took all the things that had happend to her and twisted them to the point where it can be considered "fictional". Obviously, it is just my take on the album, i could be totally wrong, but whenever i listen to Folklore or Evermore, i always catch some details that just scream" Taylor". And honestly, these are truly no musical albums of hers, this is just straight up poetry, she is really amasing

You're not alone. I see Taylor in nearly all of these songs. And you could see them as fictional stories. I really love that about Folklore and Evermore.

The "pull me apart" is about time before reputation in 2016 when the media literally pulled ger apart ans she disappeared for months.
love the fact that she can write these songs even if she is doing great in life. She and Joe wrote Exile and Betty together and I think it's pretty great that they can be in a happy longterm relationship and write these sad breakup songs together :)

I find that I listen to the whole album back to back. I very rarely play any songs from Folklore randomly. However, if I listen to the album during daytime, then I skip Mad Woman, Epiphany, Peace and Hoax. I love these songs but they slow down the pace of the album quite a lot, so I prefer to listen to them at night.

I've heard from another channel (i think Yam Haus..?) who are musicians. One of them said he can write sad songs when he's happy because it's easy to dive back in memories and search for that emotions, but songwriters who write happy songs could be the ones that need more attention, because it's possible that they come up with bright songs from a dark place in hope that they'd get lifted by their own songs somehow. I find it a pretty interesting take because happy songs could be just more sad songs that are less vulnerable or obvious... like Shake It Off or We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

the hurting in hoax is mostly about Scott and her losing her masters (but what you did was just as dark, you have beaten my heart). So this was very personal and she was definitely hurting.

  • @rociozagone

"You know it still hurts underneath my scars from when they pulled me apart, but what you did was just as dark" to me that line demonstrates that this song is about her record label stealing her music from her

LOLOL I like you just pushing forward, but his name is Dessner, not DRESSNER. At some point, you mis-read it or Genius got it wrong. imo, they get a lot of stuff wrong. And you are right, Hoax was only a temporary final track: she released the real last track (The Lakes) a couple weeks after the initial release. She talks about it with Zane Lowe. She also talks about them liking to write sad songs 😄.
