Trapped Skunk Sprays While Being Released

  • Skunk in trap sprays before being released. Again I was expecting a raccoon but got a skunk instead. It was a cool, breezy day and I was in a bit of a hurry. As I was approaching the trap a gust of wind caught the blanket and spooked the skunk. The skunk sprayed the blanket at 2:05 into the video. The skunk was released, blanket was tossed out and I avoided being sprayed, so all in all, not too bad. Lessons Learned: 1. Go slow(er). 2. If it's windy or gusty take your time to control the blanket. 3. If you feel nervous, the skunk probably does too. 4. Skunk spray is very stinky but it won't kill you.
    Two questions:
    1) How has viewing this video changed your life?
    2) Do you think I should add some narrative to this exciting video or is it pretty awesome just as it is??
    Please advise...

This morning I was feeling a little down. I was unsure of what was missing in my life...I then quickly recalled our conversation. I find myself here and once again at peace. Thank you for that.

Thanks CRC!!! There is no doubt this video checks all the boxes for changing peoples lives. Many have said it may have mystical healing power. To which I reply, "I'm but an instrument of the Universe".

Brad: Thanks for your comment! I am working on a few that will hopefully end up around the 24 minute range where I sit and really get to know the skunk before I let him/her go. I feel like it's important to learn more about how THEY feel about the experience of being trapped and released. The only way to find out is to ask!!!

One sprayed somewhere near my house a couple days ago and I went outside to look for it. Guess I breathed in too much of it cause I felt slightly dehydrated or something since then

But what was the point of trapping? Relocation from urban to forest setting makes sense. But if you're going to release a skunk where you caught it, then why bother catching it? Unless you just want to snuggle a skunk. They are insanely cuddley.

I was trying to trap a raccoon that had been tearing up my lawn and the skunk got into it by mistake. That's why I let him go.

@@carlspackler4029 That makes sense. I have both in my yard and have spent countless hours watching them live on security cams. Skunks and racoons at the same feeder are an excellent example of Knife Edge Diplomacy.

Thank for your question. You might have missed the description of the event. I was trying to trap a raccoon that was tearing up my backyard grass. The skunk got into my trap accidentally. Why did I let him go in backyard? Because he lives in the neighborhood which is surrounded by woods? I wouldn't want to take someplace else. He lives nearby.

Carl, you say, "I trap raccoons because they tear up my lawn. Skunks for the most part do not." My experience has been just the opposite. The raccoons just climb over the fence, scamper around, get into the trash if they can and leave. The skunks dig holes under one fence, dig holes all over the yard, then dig holes under the next fence and spray the neighbor's dog. We need to trade wildlife.

Vintage Tools same here the skunks I have cause issues by either spraying my dog. I have one living under my shed. racoons my dog just chases out of the yard no issues.

Why approach from the side? Seems to make sense to approach from the closed end. Makes you less of a target and does the same thing. No?

I don’t think this video is nearly as bad as Brad portrayed it to be. 👍
My only question is why did you cover the cage with the blanket in slo-mo? I would have been outta there when that skunk did that half-hearted spray in my direction.

    • @carlspackler4029

He was just nervous and they don't see very well so I waited till he settled then covered the trap. The goal was to release him.

forgot to mention you should have been patient when opening the trap this animal has no idea what just happened and is not going to run into a more dangerous situation you should not have rushed him or used the hose to hurry him out of the trap
