    In a certain place at which I was stationed, I'd watch the morning takeoff. It seemed that the aircraft had climbed out of sight before crossing the far end of the runway.

    that was certainly a shallow launch. I have memories of this beautiful lady launching vertical straight to 80 thousand feet. I saw this beautiful shadow on my scope, she did not move. Until she moved, then I could no longer touch her. Dragon Lady.

    The U2 was stationed at Laughlin A F B, Del Rio, Texas in the early 60's during the Cuban crisis. I was born and raised in Del Rio and was in college during that time frame.. I knew many of the retired pilots of the U2. They were the 4080th. Heard many stories how they would bet to see who could climb to 20,000 ft. the fastest. Remember their record was 1 minute and 30 seconds or 90 seconds to 20,000 ft. In Texas we call that shittin and gettin. Today Laughlin is the largest Air Force training base in the USA. It is names after Jack Laughlin who was the first Del Rio pilot killed in WW II. He and my mom were good friends and classmates graduating from DRHS in 1932. Every day I thank God for all the young men and women that have gone through LAFB and on to defend our country and freedom. There is a small museum dedicated to the U2 and the men who flew it in Del Rio.

      In those days a chase car was not used but a Cessna 310 was . It would fly along side the U2 and talk them to the ground. I watched this many times at LAFB. The last U2 to fly out of LAFB is now on static display at LAFB . My next door neighbor, Vic Milam . was the pilot to bring it back to be put on display. On one mission Vic got into a flat spin had had to bail out of the U2. He was at 49,000 ft when he left the plane.
      Victor L. Milam, 84, passed away December 28, 2015. He was born August 11, 1931 in Arkansas City, Kansas. Vic is survived by his son: Gary Milam and wife: Jodi of Colorado Springs. CO. and grandchildren: Jessica, Austin and Andrew. He always wanted to fly. He obtained a private pilot license while in High school. He graduated from Cowley County Community College in 1951. Vic enlisted in the Air Force at 19, and then completed airborne radio operator school. During this time he applied and was accepted for Aviation Cadets. He trained in the T-6 and graduated with class 53-B.He was assigned and flew F-84s until 1957 then he volunteered for the RB57 and was assigned to Laughlin AFB. Vic married Louene Bochat a Del Rio native his wife of 53 years. In 1963 he got checked out in the U-2 program and flew it for the next 10 years. He flew some of the early Cuban over flights. Vic is a Life member in Dandelions and has flown the T-6, T-33, F-84 RB57D, 0-2, U-3 and the U-2A, C, D, F, G, R with a total time of 5213 hours with 186 combat hours. Vic was stationed in Japan, Davis Monthan, Edwards, Laughlin, Taiwan and Andrews AFB. Vic flew missions out of Bien HOA Vietnam flying over North and South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. He also did sampling missions off Alaska. While in Eniwetok he participated in the nuclear testing projects observing and flying through the cloud above 60,000 ft. His final U-2 assignment was as Operations officer of the U-2 CIA unit for three years in Taiwan .Vic retired from the Air Force in the Grade of Colonel in 1975 and has made Del Rio his home ever since. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 from 5-9:00P.M, at G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside service will be on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Westlawn Cemetery at 2:00P.M. Military honors will be presented. Funeral arrangements with G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home, of Del Rio LTD, 114 Fletcher Drive, Del Rio, Texas. 78840 Ph: 830.775.2000

    • @robertd9928

      You'll find videos of the landing procedure at yt. Basically when it lands, a high powered car races along the runway behind the plane and a pilot sitting in it talks the pilot down, so that balance is maintained almost till standstill. Then the small wheels are put onto the wings again. The wingtips also have reinforcement to be able to be dragged along the runway.

      I think the planes currently flying were built in the 80s. They do a lot of research for NASA, NOAA, as well as military use. They're also not as expensive to operate and can carry a wide variety of sensors, cameras, etc.

    • @DarkNightDreamer
      @DarkNightDreamer 4 роки тому

      SR-71 was massively more expensive to operate and maintain. The thing leaked like a faucet on the ground lol. Not to mention required its own type of fuel. The SR-71 is still probably my favorite plane though.
