I also had one of those solar power banks, with LEDs to indicate charging, and the charge of the battery. Turns out that these LEDs drain more power than the solar panel would produce, so even if i placed the solar panel in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, the battery was still empty. When i had it charged, i had to place it in shade, so the LEDs would not drain the battery XD

i had bought on about 12$..for the price it works for emergency.with one full charge,i charging my cat b25(1300mah) and my olympus tg 810 camera(925mah)..also charging with the sun.i had left it outside winter, cloundy and little bit rainy days with dead battery and the battery was full after almost 7 days..in sunny day i think dont need much time.dont looks waterproof,i have it in a clear-view waterproof case.also keeps storage the battery energy for some months.cool the flashlight feature, not very bright but good for basic uses.for chinese low price its fair deal

Strange how they want to confuse and make a person feel it is bigger and better by using 5000mAh instead of just saying 5Ah!

It's a confusing topic. People also don't understand the conversion loss so they take their device mAh and divide then expect to get that result.

I bought one of these on EBay for $10, 12,000 mah. Yeah, right. I was handling it and noticed something odd, my thumb near the top on the 'Solar Panel' made the green light go out. But all the panel was exposed to light. ??? I needed to investigate this. Took it apart, Large battery fills the space inside. 2 tiny wires red and black go to a photo cell sensor. It is tiny. This is why my thumb turns off the green light. I peeled back the 'Solar Panel' it is just a vinyl sticker. FRAUD!! I started looking at other cheap 'Solar Powered Battery Packs, found a few more that look identical as a printed vinyl sticker, price under $20. I was able to find a small solar panel that is an actual solar panel that puts out 6v in sunlight and able to charge the battery. Takes 6-8 hours in sunlight till fully charged. I wanted a power source that was rechargeable on a bird house to power a small IP camera to watch the baby birds hatch and grow from my laptop. Battery lasts a few days powering the camera 24/7. Picked up a tiny wind generator to help it and plug it into the input side. As it is not waterproof, it is mounted under an acrylic sheet to prevent rain getting into it. Hope this helps your readers.

Hey Mega, I just took the yellow one on a 10 day canoe trip, I bought it in Vegas actually last February and survived a few trips this winter and survived and did a great job on my camera gear. However on this past trip a few weeks ago it failed, what happened is while in my canoe barrel in my pelican box, it looks like part of the solar charging system has failed and it will not charge any longer on the panel, but through USB battery still charges just fine. Just wanted to add that in, when carrying try and protect the panels.

I use one of these regularly. I think the solar panel just puts a little charge into it while sitting. I go into the woods fully charged and it last topping off my Samsung every evening, for a few days. A Goal Zero would probably do better charging it than the little solar panel built in. I think for the price it is a usefully device. If fully charged do not leave in the sun. It will expand the batteries.

Hi there! Thank you for the video. You're the best reviewer on youtube, as far as I'm concerned. You actually test the stuff. So many people just open a box and tell us what the manufacturer has written on it! You're different: you test it in different ways, giving information we can't find on the box, or manufacturer website. Hats off to you! Thank you again for this fine review! And your voice is fine, too! :-) And the settings! All good!

Wouldn't the hot micro-USB port be solved (as it might be in the other panel) by using a blocking diode to keep the electricity from flowing backward? I have one panel without a diode that depletes my device if I forget and leave it plugged in once the light's gone. I'm told the electricity is flowing back to the panel (and lost as heat, electricity flowing from high to low) and that a diode would fix it. Does this sound like the case here?

on the blue power pack I believe that an input diode is failed. a failed diode can still pass voltage to charge just not stop it from coming back and still give the voltage drop. all diodes create a voltage drop and that one seems failed but not an open circuit. I don't think it is harmful for the device. but strange.

    • @MegaWoodswalker
      @MegaWoodswalker  7 років тому

The only reason to buy this instead of a normal battery bank is for the solar charging feature, and I found mine to be completely useless for that purpose. It can take a literal week of being left outside for it to charge. If you're out in the wild somewhere you're going to need a minimum of five of these to keep your phone charged. That's if you're able to keep the solar panels for all of them in sunlight during 100% of available daylight hours. Expect even worse performance in the winter.
If you need a battery bank you can charge with the sun, look elsewhere.

I love how much smaller and lightweight this is than my older power banks ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxU45wIUiiQjrUWgrFNORkYxVlmCsYWENJ and yet it charges even more. Bought one a couple months ago and loved it so much I purchased a second one and gave it to my granddaughter as a gift. We're avid campers so power banks are an absolute must have. I also like to keep these charged for when the power at home goes out which has happened a couple times this year. They are so convenient and easy to use. You can charge multiple devices at the same time. The compass is a nice added bonus. I appreciate how quickly this arrived. I am curious to see how long these take to charge in the sun.

I am not familiar with that one. This is listed as 5000 mAh but odds are you have to charge the internal powerbank first then charge your phone second. Put the charger in the sun and leave it then later on try to charge your phone. If it has just one small panel the expectations will need to be low. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Is there a switch on it to bypass the internal battery and just send the charge to an attached device? Also, if the sun is on the panel it might stop charging your device to charge the internal battery. It is an either or situation with some devices like this if you can't close the path to either the battery or the device being charged by its internal battery.

I plan on travelling India this summer solo, hence when I'm shopping around for power packs. India is going to be hot so when I saw a solar option I got super excited. But I think you are right in the since that its really only to power the flashlight rather than the phone. Its a shame because it is a great idea.
As you seem to be very technical and know your stuff I was wondering might you be able to recommend a decent power pack? Bare in mind, I'm a student so something reasonably priced would be ideal.

MegaWoodswalker Hey Walker, greetings from Brazil. So yeah, odd usb indeed. Cos I have the same usb voltmeter/Ampmeter that you've used there in this video. You can use it to measure the voltage of say a 18650 battery by pluging a wire to the + and - poles of the battery and the usb plug in the out port of that meter. So, I think it is seeing the voltage directly from the cell inside your power bank. But where would the driver/charge circuitry be to drive the cell to the aproppriate voltage? Sorry for the mistakes is english. Oh btw, there is a flashlight on ebay/aliexpress that has a resistance to light cigars and stuff, maybe it would be also good in a survival situation to light a fire. It costs like 14 dolars. I can send you the link if you want to take a look.

I've bough one with 25 000 mah and 5v 1amp solar panel... it never seemed to even charge 1/4 charged over a WEEK on my window. From what you said that over 6 hours of charging you can charge your phone for 6 ish% so i just give a big estimate if your phone had 2500 mah so what i'm suspecting is that this will charge around 250 mah on that solar charger of yours after 6 hours in full sunlight or roughly a sunny summer day. This means mine will charge (which has 5x more battery storage) after a day 1000mah of it's battery capacity. Which is 1/25 of it's capacity... giving it 7/25 after a WEEK of decent sunlight. That's laughable because that's with very good conditions... reality would be around 5/25 or 1/5.
Think for a second about it, around one month in sunlight with yours and get to charge your phone ONCE and that's IT.

As someone who own one of these, i have to say its pretty useless as a solar charger. Haven't been able to charge my phone much more than 10% a day.

On the yellow one do you have to have the blue light on while charging phone in sun or do you let it charge on green and then plug phone when battery pack gets charged

I'm an electrician and knew that solar cell would be basically useless on those clip on lights. I'm considering buying the renogy e-flex 10 off amazon and then buying a seperate anker possibly or something else of decent quality portable 10 000mah battery bank. Any thoughts?

    • @MegaWoodswalker

The one I am using in the video is an ECEEN 10 watt high efficiency. I should do a review on it but for under 30 bucks it is very UL and seems good and is the same 10W rating not that I ever get 10 watts in the real world. It seems about the same as the one you're looking at but cheaper. For more power I would strongly consider the X-dragon 14 watt high efficiency solar charger. around 32 dollars shipped. 10,000 mAh at 3.7 nominal volts would have a loss when pushed up to 5 volt USB. I am sure you know better than me but it would probably be something like 7,400 mAh at 5V which is plenty for most applications. Just test out the combo first before actual need to check the reliability of the powerbank against charging errors from intermittent power aka passing clouds etc etc. After the last IOS upgrade any cloud will create a charging error in my Apple devices. Another reason why charging a reliable powerbank (like you intend) first is a smart play. Thanks for watching!

MegaWoodswalker thanks I actually didn't really think about what the output voltage they rated the units at. I assumed the 10 000 mah rating would be at 5v not the nominal 3.7v. Thanks. I will check out those other panels. It's a bit of a pain ordering stuff in canada though that is part of the reason I was thinking about the renogy e-flex 10. It's available on amazon.ca Still far cheaper and way better than the goal zero junk. I will also look into the those panels you suggested as well. Thanks!

Eceen 10 watt.ua-cam.com/video/rPwQ0fzjCRc/v-deo.html is my favorite as it beats just about everything in terms of lower light as can be seen here when compared to another which is also good. The Renogy. ua-cam.com/video/xG9c1Xx7FhM/v-deo.html

It always charges so long as the panel is exposed to sun light though slowly even in ideal conditions. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! Micro USB. Micro USB is a miniaturized version of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface developed for connecting compact and mobile devices such as smartphones, MP3 players, GPS devices, photo printers and digital cameras. Micro SD www.amazon.com/Micro-SD-Memory-Cards/b?ie=UTF8&node=3015433011 So it is Micro USB NOT Micro SD which would be used in a Gopro.
