The Japanese were using armor piercing naval shells modified to be used as aerial bombs. That's why the bomb penetrated so deep into Arizona before exploding. The resulting fireball and blast pressure from the exploding powder mag, followed almost instantly by exploding shells, would have likely killed everybody, or almost everybody, still below deck. The explosion was so powerful it crumpled the bow, lifted it out of the water and created waves estimated to be 10-12 feet high to hit the shore on, I believe, Ford Island.
Not to sound like conspiracy nut, but I believe there's evidence that there were midget subs in pearl that hit the USS W.Virginia. One of them might've hit the Arizona too, yes I know the Arizona was trapped by other ships but you never know.
+AchillesSpear22 I think of any ship got hit by a mini sub, it would have been the Oklahoma. So I would agree with the article if there was any definitive proof
Bo, thanks for your story and some family history. My father was born in 1931 and was just a little bit too young to serve during WWII. He did join the Air Force and proudly served for 22 years, but I think his biggest regret was not being able to fly and fight in WWII. He was always interested in WWII history and he got me interested in it too.
it’s funny cause one of my friend’s relative was the commander of the Arizona during the attack and went down with the ship (awesome video by the way!)
Bohica, I love this type of video. You should make more of these on different subjects. While I don't mind you playing the regular game, I happen to like it more when you talk about the history of certain planed and vehicles when you record. I know that I am only one viewer, and that you have thousands that want something else, but please, make more videos like this.
Being sort of part of a military family (my dad and several of my uncles were in the Navy in the 60s and early 70s, one of my dad's aunts was in the Navy in WWII, a cousin just retired from the Seabees, another was a Marine, and one married an Air Force mechanic) I love hearing about military history
Quick note of pride: my shadow box has a flag flown over the Arizona. Needless to say, if the house burns, the flag gets saved before I do. Thanks for another great vid!
my dads father flew p47s escorting bombers over europe late into the war. like almost the end, after the war he was given the option of leaving the service or taking a cut in rank. he took the rank cut and ended up serving all the way to vietnam as a loadmaster on a cargo plane. his plane went down in Vietnam and his name is on the Vietnam wall... ive seen it.
Not sure if this is true but I watched a documentary about pearl harbor, and the day (or 2) prior to the attack, the fleet were practicing maneuvers and it was a foggy day. And the Arizona and Oklahoma I believe had a mini collision. the fleet was due to depart on the 6th, but the collision caused a delay, and we all know what happened next. Another interesting fact about the Arizona is that she was a oil burner, she would've been stationed in the Atlantic but the UK was short on oil, so she was assigned to the Pacific fleet.
USS Arizona's No. 4 turret was actually reconditioned (and its guns reinstalled inside it) and put on USS Nevada as its turret No. 4 before Nevada (herself a Pearl Harbor survivor...and the only capital ship to get underway that morning) was shifted to the pacific theater following Normandy. USS Arizona's reconditioned No. 4 turret, as USS Nevada's No. 4 turret, was actually used to fire on Okinawa before and during the invasion of the island...and would've been used to engage IJN Yamato in the suicidal night action of the slow BB line if that Japanese ship had survived until sundown and still been continuing towards Okinawa. As far as I'm aware Arizona's No. 4 turret was still on Nevada when it was expended during operation Crossroads, the first Bikini Atoll atomic bomb test.
Bo, In war thunder there is a special tip if you lose tail control, like the video with the halifax. Flaps generate lift so you can lift you aircraft, but its gonna be different. Also use engine control
A good book on the attack on Pearl Harbor is "At dawn we slept" by Gordon W. Prange. Along with his follow up book about the battle of Midway. I have both of those on my shelves along with " The tank killers" by Harry Yeide. A history on the U.S WW 2 Tank destroyer force. Very good books, that are good informative reading. Long time World of Tanks player here. I'll start playing WOWS, eventually.
Garret Daniel in sorry for your loss, I also live in Arizona (love it here) and I'm glad to know that the state has one of the Arizona's guns on display.
At least from my understanding about the sinking of the Arizona is that she was the ship that was hit harder. Whether that is true or not, I couldn't tell you. But the killing blow that I have heard from multiple sources was that an AP round rigged with a timed charge on it pierced the deck between #1 and #2 turret, resting in between the two powder magazines of the turrets, detonating both, creating an explosion with enough force that it lifted and split the bow almost completely off the ship, snapping it much like a twig or that's at least what it looked like. The resulting damage when she settled back down in the water was enough to cause her to sink in a time frame of something like 15-20 minutes. Too short of a time for rescue efforts to take place and entombing the majority of her crew below decks. She had all of her bulkheads opened because she was in port and not at sea so there wasn't a need so that is why she sunk so fast. That's at least all that I have heard and for the most part, that sounds like the most logical explanation.
When you have a premium ship, use the 22,500 credit consumables, you will never lose money, just gain a little elss, but they have lower cooldowns that can save you
Literally just watched this video today and I go into World of Warships and it gave it to me for free for 7 days. World of Warships has been giving me so much free premium stuff rn idek why😂😂 I love it
I like how he said stick out like a sore thumb for the turrets being color coded so they stop doing that. USS BB61 (Iowa) and has a huge American Flag on top of turret 1
Kabuki Kitsune I understand what they are trying to do and I respect it. I always have had the belief that the digital versions of these ships, planes, etc are the best bet at getting to new generations who would generally not give a care about history. These digital copies give me an amazing platform to try and pass on information and stories about the past. There are a lot of people who don't know about Pearl Harbor and the Arizona. If a handful of people are reached and learn more about the crews story. Then I say let it be in the game. Also a huge number of the ships in WoWs sank or had casualties during their service. If this was the standard that War Gaming wanted to introduce... they would have to pull a lot of their ship line up.
Well put and couldn't agree with you more. I think a lot of people who are understandably nervous about historical Ships, Vehicles and events being represented in games like this just need to be shown some of the educational and historical stories people like yourself and The Mighty Jingles put out to people who would normally have absolutely no interest in it. Just be sure and not let them see any of your videos with Cobey ranting or Mo drunk. Trying to make a good impression n all :p
If you want to damage players badly, use the HE shells. AP shells are meant for Battleships and Heavy Cruisers if you're want to hit them in the front or side and can't get them from the top.
make sure to switch out your ammo types. For most long range shots, unless you can get a good, clean hit on the side, use HE. AP Doesn't like hitting above the deck, and since you're accurate more often than not you can start lots of fires. For me, AP works better at mid to knife-fight ranges because the trajectories are flatter.
hey bo im from Canada when ww2 started and Canada joined almost instantly and i was researching Canadas involvement and Canada navy actually patrolled some of the Atlantic coast to protect the US from German subs. my question is kinda broad but in your opiun did Canada make a big contribution to the war effort
later in the war Canada did, but early on they did jack shit like everyone else, seeing the first sub attack by the Germans near US coast rocked the whole US and sent everyone into a frenzy. same thing when the "Japanese" attacked.
Canada fought with the Brits with it being a Commonwealth country so yes, they did a lot. There were Canadian RAF units and they landed on one of the beaches during the Normandy invasion
+Thekilleroftanks No, Canada actually had more involvement earlier in the war than most people thought, the Battle/Fall of Hong Kong and the Battle of Britain were some early actions. One interesting to note was that Newfoundland was not a part of the Canadian Dominion at that time.
Hey Bo. Watching your videos I am always interested by the amount of information you and Cobey have with regards to the planes, tanks and ships you guys are playing. Did you guys serve in the armed forces, or is it just research?. Either way, Great vid. Wish we where in the same time zone so we could play together.
Bo, A Simple Request. Can you sail out the USS Texas and give the History behind it? I've got a lot of fans of yours from Texas that work at the hospital with me and they elected me as the spokes person to ask you. Thanks for the Videos Keep up the great work =)
I feel stupid for asking this but is the Arizona still in the game? I haven't seen any gameplay of this ship at all for literally months now. Love all the vids btw. You guys are great!
Bo Time Gaming Anytime Bo! Thanks for the reply and actually taking the time to look into the history and sharing it in the video. The Arizona has and always will hold a special place in my heart. Well I did this commentary at 5 A.M. lol I streamed that day, tried to do some squad videos with moevil, ended up going solo and doing this commentary. I thought i sounded normal though... I wouldn't have uploaded it if I thought it was sub par or I was upset when doing it.

jesus
Didn't the shock wave from the explosion almost knock 2 Japanese planes out of the sky as well. I remember reading that somewhere i think.
+ElCaminoGuy2005 I don't believe so

Thanks!
Nice to see educated people who actually give a damn about our greatest generations struggle in WW2 I am also an absolute history nerd
Marcus Trant me too
me too love world history and world war 2.

I am from Az and I love this ship ! Bo thank you for your videos I am really enjoying them . thank you Ky
My great grandfather was a dive bomber on the USS Yorktown and after midway was moved to My grandma said they called it The Big E or Enterprise (cv-6)
i absolutely love every video that you do that has a history lesson in it.
Being that I was raised in Arizona as a child, I remember being quite heart broken to learn the Arizona was lost at Pearl Harbor.
Ya me to 😢

You should talk about Khe Shan
I live in Arizona and my great grandpa help built the ship and his brother died in it
Garret Daniel in sorry for your loss, I also live in Arizona (love it here) and I'm glad to know that the state has one of the Arizona's guns on display.
You gotta love the Torpedo protection and esp the accuaracy of the Arizona.
Nice vid...always had a thing for her sister, the Pennsylvania. Damn beautiful ships.
Thanks Bo for explaining why the turrets are red, I never knew.
I've always loved the Arizona. Also, love your vids bo keep up the good work. ;)
This was my first ever model ship, built it with my dad in '77 or thereabouts.
At least from my understanding about the sinking of the Arizona is that she was the ship that was hit harder. Whether that is true or not, I couldn't tell you. I like how he said stick out like a sore thumb for the turrets being color coded so they stop doing that. USS BB61 (Iowa) and has a huge American Flag on top of turret 1
You did so much damage to that Minekaze, 11 of the other 15 Minekaze class sister ships also sank!
lol

The uss Arizona was part of the 1st division of battleships that’s why it has red on the guns
Good shooting - dispersion on that thing seems pretty tight for a BB
It is accurate. That is one of the first things I noticed.
Thanks for playing it i can see the gameplay and im gonna use the ship when i have a New pc my old one broke
This would make a great podcast
My us history class just essentially said there was a war and just focused on the government programs that were made
I once had a game in a Myoko where a ap shell caused flooding

Canada did in a lot of ways. Manufacturing and in Military. Read about the Canadians involved in Operation Blockbuster :)
Canada fought with the Brits with it being a Commonwealth country so yes, they did a lot. There were Canadian RAF units and they landed on one of the beaches during the Normandy invasion

Great little tid bit! Next time, you ought to do a podcast with the gang on the story of the USS Lexington.
As far as I know, Bataan was the start of WW2 for America, followed a couple days later by Pearl Harbour
The Japanese began he invasion of the Philippines on Dec 8th , one day after Pearl Harbor . Not before.
You should do a podcast about the battleships in pearl harbor and what happened to the ships after the attack or just about the attack itself
the #4 turret was hit by a bomb so the last 2 we're not used on other ships the #2&3 might have been salvaged
Hey Bo.

love the videos
Thx Bo. Great video. Remember our fallen in Pearl Harbour!
I feel stupid for asking this but is the Arizona still in the game? I haven't seen any gameplay of this ship at all for literally months now. Love all the vids btw. You guys are great!
Yes it is still in game. Thanks for the kind words and comment!

Bo, what are your thoughts on the upcoming German battleships?
Are you looking forward to playing that tech tree?
I am always happy to see a new branch added in this game.
Also, if you do make a podcast about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, I would recommend talking about the film "Tora! Tora! Tora!", if you've seen it.
My grandpa served in the navy during we2..
Frank Sinatra did a cover of that song in his "nothing but the best album" under the same name.
try the Halifax bomber in simulator battles lol its fun when you have it upgraded
is the missouri inplemented into the game? excuse my typo if any errors, great vídeo and greetings from spain
Yes, sort of. The Iowa class is the Tier 9 US BB
Will there ever be a full podcast for this ship?
Maybe. I am kinda nervous talking about the Attack on Pearl Harbor because I have heard literally dozens of different "theories" of what happened to what. I guess I could do a podcast running through those someday. The ship itself isn't that important. The event that occurred to the Arizona is what catapulted it into history.

How did you get that new damage thing on the side, where it tells you penetrations and bounces?
It was actually part of the last patch. Should be under your options.
Thanks
You more than pulled your weight in this video, you can't be expected to do everything yourself. I had no idea the Arizona was in World of Warships now!
Hey Bo, how does a German ATGM bounce off a track (Russian track) an come back and kill me?
Bo, do u ever stream WOWS?
was this a premium from the shop or one you win?
From the shop.
Dang looking at that first kill you got you could work for a naval group

To all those who believe the US high command knew about the attack, explain the casualty count, and just being completely unprepared....
Matthew Cubbage
they didn't know about the attack they had suspicions on the attack but they never thought that the Japanese would ever attack Pearl harbor
it depends on high command. the pacific high command had suspicions but no proof. by the time washington high command got the intel decoded and everything was sent out including a warning of a impending attack it was to late.
USS Arizona was made during ww1
Hello

Remember Pearl Harbor
We don't take state history...sounds like you're in the south..
We took World History, US History and Econ/US Government as our history classes in high school
is that a problem?
Seems like something is bothering him in this video
