I have this as my current company car from work. The best way to drive this car day to day is to use braking mode. This means the EV unit will charge itself as you drive resulting in you losing less battery life as you would in drive mode. The GTE mode can be executed 2 ways either press the button or put the Accelerator pedal to the floor. The car literally roars to life. I personally think this pisses all over the GTD in so many ways. I think it will ultimately spell the end of diesel for VW. The range on EV power alone and even in braking mode is probably about 33 miles but this really depends on how hilly your journey is. The performance is something to behold and the cohesion of all that technology which keeps things moving nicely is the DSG box. It creates the most seamless driving experience i have ever experienced from a hot hatch (which it is). This car is the future! The range of the batteries will improve and the batteries will get smaller meaning a lighter overall car, resulting in even better fuel economy and performance. It's a progressive ethos from VW which can only bode well for the environment and those of us who love cars.
I am definetly getting one of these. but tell me please, do brake lights come on when you are in a recuperating moda and take your foot of the gas? they should as it slows down the car rapidly.
GTE mode is not activated when putting your pedal to the floor. Steering is not any heavier, engine isn't making louder noices, suspension isn't tightend. So basically it isn't activated the way you say it is. Btw, I drive one aswell, so I know you're full of shit on that part.
+IsDitGerben Do you know if the DCC makes the ride quality better than the normal suspension? I have heard that because of the batteries, the suspension had to be stiffened and hence the ride quality is sacrificed.
This video has very quickly made me want this car. Just watching you drive down that road in EV mode with the window down, hearing the birds looked so tranquil!
I recently got a 2016 GTE and I absolutely love driving it. I usually only do under 2000 miles a year, I’ve had this car 5 weeks and have already done 1500 miles! I smile all the time I’m in it and try to find any excuse to get in it and drive. 😃 I’ve been driving for 53 years and this car is the best yet. Second wind at 70 😄👍🚙 Nice to see a review where both hands are on the wheel most of the time 👍
@@emgee44 yes, I still have it and still love it. As to the standard Golf, I don’t like the wide front and rear pillars and the hard rear middle seat. I’ve done 11,500 miles since July 2018. Obviously the battery life is getting less as time passes but I can go still 20 miles on a charge. I have a home charge unit and that keeps costs down. Still has great acceleration at 204bhp and having a quick spurt of speed when it’s safe lifts my spirits. Downside, the heating/cooling system takes main battery power unfortunately, so lowers the range available. I have heated seats though and that just drops 1 mile off the range whereas demising can drop 5 miles off so I just do a quick blast. Probably costs me £1.30 for a 20 mile charge so I’m happy with that. The limited range is an issue but I live with that. I worry about the petrol getting ‘gummed up’ as it’s in the tank for ages as I mainly do short trips. Also being registered before April 2017, I pay no road tax. I would probably try to upgrade the battery power rather than change the car. 👍😀🚘
@@Jetjai Many thanks for detailed response, I’m looking at hybrids due to the new ULEZ restrictions coming in next year as my current car (1.6 TDi Golf mk6) isn’t compliant. Of all the hybrids I think the GTE is the best looking both in and outside the car and seems to offer the best driving experience, my only concern is reliability given that VW discontinued the model. Sure the Audi A3 eTron shares some of the components so parts shouldn’t be a problem, it’s the servicing I’m concerned about. The one thing that may rule this car out for me is that I’m unable to charge the car at home or at work, how much of an impact would that have if I’m only able charge the car when driving and from a charge point once in while? I was also considering the eTron but understand that VW removed the ability to charge the battery while driving to save weight.
@@emgee44 I would say it’s very important to have home and/or work charging. I have only used external charging a few times and don’t find it economic. There have been quite a few free chargers emerging, such as on Tesco sites in collaboration with VW but if they go wrong, they are not quick to repair them. So there are a lot out of service for months. J
@Jelle, bedankt. Hoop dat je het een leuke video vond dan :) PS: ik kan niet rechtstreeks antwoorden onder jouw reactie. Er staat geen "beantwoorden". Ik denk dat dit iets met jouw intstellingen in google plus te maken heeft.
When you go off or park the car you do not need to turn the parking brake. The alone goes in and out alone when you give gas. I work at Volkswagen. best regards
The thing that worries me most in this car is the engine's reliability. In other words, when driving and having the engine constantly turn on and off, especially after or during an agressive ride. It is hardly any good for the turbo or the engine wear?
what you think is a rpm is not. it's just showing whether you charging or using 20 30 50 % etc. power. the actual rpm for tsi engine is a little round thing on the left bottom
Alex Martin i don't know for sure if the test car has DCC or normal supension. If it had DCC there should have been a button to choose the mode and i don't recall there being such a button, so i assume it didn't have DCC.

Thanks. Ya I found that out after I asked on here. I can imagine in a few years when this gets offered on lower line Golfs. They could offer with say a 1.0 or 1.2 liter engine without the GT trim. There is also a Passat GTE and this without GT would be perfect for my wife as she drives about 20km round trip to work.
enjoying your videos... but you might as well drop the little boot opening ritual in the beginning... most of the time it's too dark in there to see anything... :-)
+Johan De Haes that's bullshit. you can also charge batteries when driving with petrol engine. it just doesn't make sense from economy point of view. but it's possible.

Hello mate, I’m thinking of getting mine remapped for the extra 30/40% power in GTE mode. Have you done the same?

IsDitGerben I have a 2016 GTE and when I switch to GTE mode, the steering definitely gets heavier.
Amazing! 2 cars in one. Love that flexibility

@Erik Neumann, most of the video was shot in country roads near Leuven, Belgium.

Hi, I would be interested to know how you've gotten with the car, do you still have own it, what issues if any have you had?

What’s the reliability like on high mileage one ?

Have you had the car? If so could you inform me abt the engine reliability cuz im looking for that too

Is there a way you can manually hold the battery? So you can use it I the city yet use the engine on the motorway.
Standaard ambient light in door panel?
Does the car of the test have DCC or normal suspension? If it's normal, it is comfort?

Does this have regenerative breaking?
+jteeselink yes, it uses recuperation to charge the batteries during braking.

muk he
Is your job ? Is your car ? Good video
Esteban De Oliveira no i make the videos because i like making them and i like cars :) This is not my car.
You have to manually change the gear speed? or it is automatic in gte mode ?
It comes with flappy pedal gearbox by default + has manual change in sport mode with the stick.
how many this car cost
In Belgium the price of the Golf GTE is around 38.970 euro
hoe duur is deze auto ?
+weskee10 basisprijs van Golf GTE is 38.920 €

Eerst liken, dan kijken :)
Johan De Haes
Just imagnie one of these, but with a GTD engine!!
As-tu aimé rouler avec cette voiture ?
Merci beaucoup
Oui, c'était chouette
Quel est la voiture avec laquelle tu as préféré rouler en moteur essence avec moins de 200 Cv?merci beaucoup pour ta réponse
enjoying your videos... but you might as well drop the little boot opening ritual in the beginning... most of the time it's too dark in there to see anything... :-)
Ewout Pierreux ok i will consider dropping my boot opening ritual :)
Johan De Haes if you would look deeper, the camera would probably adjust and it would be visible. Good video.
where is this from and how can i import it to the US
i'm from Belgium
i am newby to hybrids... is the battery recharging while use the petrol engine?
+aztec8765 the battery is charged while braking or when you plug it in with the cable in a power outlet.
