- An interview with former members of the English progressive rock band Yes. Former Yes singer Jon Anderson, singer/guitarist Trevor Rabin, and keyboardist Rick Wakeman are now Yes featuring Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman. This interview aired September 8, 2018 on WGN TV, Chicago.
So it was Owner of a Lonely Fart! LOL hahahaha. I love these guys and hope they continue to play!
I never thought in a million years I'd hear Jon Anderson say, "There's more to life than nookie".

Anderson looks like he´s an opportunist, indeed about to try to change teams. I love his voice, and it´s hard to separate YES from Anderson but honestly, the more I hear and read about him the less I like it. Grumpy Howe acts more gentlemanly.
@@Tellygiorgos Have you been to any Yes concerts in 2019? Steve Howe was the biggest SNOB!!! I have been a life-long Yes fan and especially a Steve Howe maniac. But the guy is anything but a gentleman. He refuses to shake hands with people, controls the living heck out of the current Yes band, yells at the audience, refuses to let anyone even have their phones out of their pockets. No pictures, no anything. He rarely smiles on stage and is quite a dud. I know people who have met him, and he often shines people off and refuses to take photos or sign autographs. He's well known to be less than gentlemanly.
I can´t judge about what you said, haven´t seen Howe live in 2019, but I agree he sure looks grumpy, which is not the same as being impolite. I like the fact that he never talked bad as far as I can judge about "the other Yes", saying that they have a strict policy not to comment on them at all, since "the other Yes" made plenty of comments which were often not nice. I consider this to be classy of Howe. Now, I can live with him stopping the phones, in fact it annoys the hell out of me going to concerts looking at all those phones in front of me blocking my view, and wonder why these people can´t enjoy the moment in stead of filming half of the concert and looking at a small screen, but this is a different topic. I don´t appreciate Howe or any other prominent (ex) Yes member for their smiles or handshakes but for their contribution to music. Love Rick Wakeman the musician, for sure is he a lot more smiles and jokes but I find him not to be very gentlemanly to Howe for example, not to mention Anderson.
@@Tellygiorgos There are many things that Howe said about YES in the 80s. He said YES was Jon, Chris and he with the best dummer and keyboard . The band out now as YES is a joke.
Jon is 73 years old. He looks awesome.

@@moneyfindersllc6236 Jon used to be a vegetarian in the 1970's, but he started eating some dairy and fish in the 1980's onward. He was never a vegan. He had some major health issues around 2008 that almost killed him. He's been taking good care of himself since.
Yeah he looks like he is 72.
Trevor is an outstanding guitar player and very little cited amongst the so called lengends

Trevor Rabin is the reason why I even play music. Nobody plays or sounds like trevor Rabin. Incredibly talented and soulful

@@rockhouse90 I agree 1000%. Trevor Rabin saved YES, to paraphrase Rick Wakeman. And while not everyone stayed with them post 90125....there in no doubt that Trevor is a rare World Class Talent as a guitarist,composer and near-genius musician.
Rick W. is so humble to recognize how important 90125 (AND Big Generator---that was a stellar pop record!) was, despite him not being on it. Tony Kaye did a wonderful job and served the purpose on that album, Big Gen, and Talk. Those were three fantastic additions to the catalog.
Agreed. And speaking of Kaye, his amazing work on Miracle of Life from the Union album should also be mentioned.

Tony Kaye is infinitely underrated.
People often don't realise that Kaye was the original keyboard player before Wakeman. I prefer Wakeman's playing though.
Talk is Trevor's finest work and the first Rabin Yes album Jon and Trevor wrote together.
In 1983 we were hanging out at a campground in Newport News Va. - drinkin and sittin by the fire, just generally being crazy teenagers when my buddy said you gotta check out this album! He threw Fragile into the CASSETTE player (sparkomatic 100 watts😎) and we cranked it up! I was hooked 30 seconds into the first song. We partied all night and listened to the album multiple times. Within a week I had bought as many of their albums as I could find- no downloads in early 80s, you had to hit the record stores! Still to this day I listen to some of their songs and I'm like " how the f!@# did they come up with this stuff??!" Yes is truly an example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts- each member so creative in their own right but coming together they transcend each other. I have listened to their albums HUNDREDS of times and IT NEVER GETS OLD. I feel sad for those people who have never heard, or dont appreciate their musical legacy.
Feel sad if they don't appreciate. Don't feel the same for those who have never heard, for there is still hope.
Wakeman could have been a stand up comedian, genuinely funny.

He did host a stand-up show in the UK for about 10 or so years!

Straight from Rick W. Trevor Rabin saved Yes.Seen ARW last year and it was outstanding absolutely outstanding!
Rick's an infinite source of laughs. Jon's still the wee boy from the north of England who wanted to play football for his local team. Trevor gets more and more handsome through the years, he's an all-music person but he loves having a laugh himself too.

May I say this is Yes' best line up ever? They got rid of all the tensions and the competitiveness and the mess of a sometimes 8-piece band, now it's only 'the best ones' who are on the road and I'm simply sad Chris can't be around having his share of laughs as well. :-*

Magnanimous of Rick to say 90215 was the most important YES album.
He is as classy as he is musically gifted and sharp-witted. His Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech had the audience rolling in the aisles and was a breath of fresh air.
Wakeman could of been a stand up comedian in another lifetime, he’s hilarious every time I’ve heard him public speaking lol

They are all certainly legendary, but I can confidently say that Rick Wakeman is an absolute prodigy, anomaly, and next level legend at his craft. Thank you for the music fellas ….

I was camping with some friends (no nookie!) on an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River and Patrick shows up with a portable 8-track player (they were heavy!) and he plays Fragile which starts with Roundabout. At the time I was a senior in high school and sang in 5 different choral groups including my church choir (all my love Chris!) and within 30 seconds music changed for me forever. Yes has been my favorite band since that moment. So lush and such rich soundscapes and so so very much depth in Jon's lyrics. God Bless you all forever :)
I totally agree with Rick that had "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and the rest of "90125" never been produced, you'd be hard pressed to find an old Yes album for sale on eBay today.
@E M I hope to say the same to him someday. Trevor is most definitely deserving of being under the Yes name. I've never understood why so many bicker over Steve and Trevor, when they can be thankful Yes has endured with two very talented guitarists/writers.
I happen to enjoy the YES period on which Trevor didn´t play more. I think "Owner of a lonely heart" is a good song but does have the YES feel to it, is is incomparable with the albums I love most such as Close to the edge, Fragile, Relayer, the Yes album. Awaken is an epic song too, not from those albums.

Can't say I agree with that at all myself. Yes produced some albums in the early 70s that were _always_ going to be classics, with or without their 80s corporate rock incarnation.
Rob Ashton - You’re right in a way, but I wouldn’t call 90125 corporate in any negative sense. It’s a fantastic album, and it revived the band - but who knows how else Yes would have continued or transformed without Trevor? There are a lot of incredibly talented people in the world, we have no idea. So yeah, I don’t think Yes would’ve ‘died,’ but I think it got scary for the band at the time so they looked before they leaped, but didn’t hesitate at all... no no!
This was the best Yes in years! Hope they pick it back up after the pandemic
Been a Yes fan since I first heard 'Hold On' on fm radio back around early '84. Then got a hold of the prog stuff and made me a fan for life!

As usual Rick Wakemens indomitable wit has everyone in stitches.
This song is WHY I play music! Also, for years I mis-read Wakeman (because I never heard him speak). I thought he took himself too seriously with the cape he wears. Now that I know he's hysterically funny, I look at the cape in a whole different light. Maybe I'll start wearing one!
Rick seems like a pretty funny guy. I never would have guessed that from his stage presence.

Trevor Rabin is how I was introduced to Yes in the '80s with "Owner of a Lonely Heart" that cassette teeshirt says it all, I was on the cassettes that was the format of the '80s. Love to find a teeshirt like that! sums up my experience in 1983 at age 12 and 13!
I was into yes because my older brother was a big 'adventurous' rock fan. But 90125 is probably the album I listened to more than any other, I think it was my first cassette. Before that was 8 tracks. Now we're dinosaurs.

Been a fan for a long time, got to see them 3 times, Union tour, then late 90's, and this ARW tour. Went to see Rick do his solo music, and comedy show just a couple months ago, great shows every time. I never thought I'd see them do "Revealing Science of God" from the "Tales" album live, but they played it at my 2nd concert, I was ecstatic. When they broke into I I stood up yelled & clapped, and I was the only one.., no one else knew what it was. I was 11 rows back so know they saw me. 😁

Wonderful, magnificent. I went to the Crystal Palace Bowl on my old Honda 50, some 50 years ago and was treated to the premiere of Close to the Edge. Ive been a follower of a few dedicated musicians, who have persevered (eg. Donald Fagen, James Taylor, Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour) but for some reason, until very recently I guess I mistakenly thought that Yes could never come near the amazing heights of their youth. How wrong can you be? Now I’m making up for lost time; and loving it.

That's a really tight band, in a good way. They seem to get along very well. And we can see their sense of humour is still there even after all these years.

I actually wish that this interview had been longer. I remember the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech and Rick Wakeman's part had me in stitches. It is always refreshing to see legendary performers who can be self deprecating and not take themselves too seriously. I watched this trio's concert on Axis TV a few years ago and was impressed by how well things worked with them together. The supporting musicians on drums and bass were solid as well and stayed true to the spirit of the original material while still, at times, injecting their own unique styles into the show. For me, Yes is not Yes without Andersen and Wakeman and Rabin,.as credited in this interview, almost single handedly helped revive and make the group relevant again to a new generation of fans. A full reunion of the remaining members of the group would be nice, but this trio along with its supporting cast is the next best thing. The other Yes with Jon Davidson just sounds like a tribute or cover band to me. Were Jon Andersen no longer able to sing the material then I would perhaps understand the need for someone else fronting the band as lead singer but Andersen has more than adequateky demonstrated that he has kept his voice in very good condition, range intact, and is more than capable of captivatinging an audience with his performances.
In my world, the Yes Album released in 1971 was the turning point for modern YES. With “Yours Is No Disgrace”, Sylvia I am learns how to use ear hopping percussions, a Mile Tron, and three back to begin the song to a crescendo that is just mind bending. Starship Trouper, was the 1st song I had ever heard by the band YES. From that point forward, this song had performed aural love on my cranium. I was hooked and there was no turning back. “Every Little Thing”, This Lennon and McCartney tune was performed on the
2nd YES album called: “A Time And A Word”. YES, also experimented with a Richie Havens song. In my opinion, their 1st groundbreaking usage of someone else’s song came when they reworked: “America“ by Paul Simon. This was done with the album version and the single 45 RPM version. The album version is featured on the “Close To The Edge” remastered album.
Yes songs, Ally double album is released next. Tales from Topographic Oceans was the 1st time any contemporary rock group had released one song that encompassed the entire side of the record.. this is common in the classical music world but yes example was groundbreaking for American rock ‘n’ roll.. after listening to close to the edge, I had my first opportunity to see yes at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1972. The cost of my ticket for a two hour show was 7dollars

I think they should have thanked Trevor Horn for producing 90125 , he was a key player in the success.

I love Jon,s speaking voice , it’s just like his singing voice , very high. I saw them live in early 1970s at the Fillmore here in San Francisco, they just blew me away . The most UNDERRATED / UNDER APPRECIATED group of them all. They blow Pink Floyd away . If both bands were to do a show together you would hear the difference in musicality , this band had it all . “ Roundabout “ was such a sophisticated progressive song , as original ,and musical as a Beatles song , and that was just the beginning . How the hell it took those no talents in the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame fifty years to recognize this group says much in respect to what they consider music ...

You’re out of luck - Rick gave up the booze in 1985. I on the other hand would join any Yes fan for a beer or several.
My fav. Wakeman quip is that he never listens to Union because it always make him cry (pronounced like the vegetable).
I loved it when the host actually wants to play the clip of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Rick Wakeman speech son don't go any into any dirty sleazy strip clubs cuz if you do you'll see something you should well I have to agree with him on that because I didn't walk into a strip club actually walk into a sex shop and found my parents in there true story thanks Rick it's great to see the members of Yes out there doing what they love to do best

If it weren't for Trevor, Yes would've died after Drama. The fact that there are currently two incarnations of Yes touring today, you can entirely thank him for that.
Howe saved Yes is correct..
Rabin destroyed the finesse of Yes music. Loud, overbearing, bombastic. It was 80's nightmare garbage. Yes would have survived, and probably made some great albums had Rabin not joined the band. Instead we got so-called music unworthy of their incredible classic period.

They all had a hand in saving the band. But it's true that 90125 did a big "shed load" to further the band. Had that album not been a success, that would have likely been the end of Yes. Bands need to make money. Maybe they would have still been around but they would have been playing extremely small venues. And with no label support, where would that leave them at that time? TYA saved them. Then years later when they needed it, 90125 saved them. OYE saved them in a way most people don't understand too.
It's a shame ARW never produced an album of new stuff.
It's harder to focus on chart position when you get older. Or you can get someone to read it to you.
There are more members of Yes in ARW than in the current version of Yes!
