Moe, Shemp, and Jerome (Curly) were brothers. Larry was a close family friend. Shemp was originally in the act (in vaudeville)when he decided to strike out on his own. You'll see him turn up in various movies of the day. When he left, Jerome replaced him, shaving his head and adopting the name Curly. Curly suffered a stroke in 1946 while filming and sadly passed away a few years later in 1952. Shemp rejoined the act when Curly fell ill and stayed until his own death in 1955. After Shemp, the 3rd Stooge was played by Joe Besser and Joe DeRita respectively.
Shemp is Moe's older brother and one of the original Stooges. Curly definitely became one of the most popular of all time after Shemp left the troupe to do his own thing, but after Curly suffered a stroke and became unable to continue with the act Shemp would step in again and fill the role as third Stooge. Shemp, Moe, and Curly were all brothers.
He's a regular supporting player, most fans consider him "the 4th stooge". After Larry passed away, they had plans to continue with Moe, Curly Joe DeRita and Emil playing Larry's cousin "Harry" but Moe passed before it went anywhere.
"Moe, my head is off, my head is off. Oh, there it is and as pretty as a picture" Moe's response "Yeah, of an ape" SMACK! Hilarious! More, Curly and Shemp were brothers. Curly, suffered a series of strokes in the mid forties and had to retire. They brought Shemp in to replace him. Curly passed in 1952 at age 49. Shemp passed in 1955 at age 59 or 60. Moe was the last to pass in 1975 at age 78. Their long time friend Larry Fine passed in 1975 at age 72. The Three Stooges, by far the greatest slapstick comedy act ever and also the greatest sound effects in comedy ever! Peace ❤
Columbia had a short shooting time, that left “the boys” over 6 months to personally tour vaudeville type joints. That’s where their dough was. Harry Cohen was cheap so they recycled sets and costumes from other features. Same contract for 24 years, then locked out, no goodbyes, f-u or anything.
I've been watching The Three Stooges for many, many years. I still laugh even though I've seen every episode many times. They never get old. ❤❤❤😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
The scene between Shemp and Christine McIntyre was apparently a struggle, because Christine, being a lady, just wouldn’t hit Shemp and when she did, it was very dainty slaps. Finally, Shemp just said to her ‘Christine, just go all out on it. One big smack hurts less than ten small ones’. So, they went and film it again and that was the take they used of Christine just beating the shit out of Shemp. In fact, when she punches him through the door, she really did punch him and broke his nose. When they finished filming, she was so apologetic to Shemp, but he just sat up and said, ‘I did tell you to go all out’.
0:33 Shemp was another brother to Moe Howard When The Three Stooges were a Vaudeville act, Shemp was originally the 3rd Stooge and stepped down for Curly to be part of the act when they were making the three stooges movies, Shemp had returned to the act after Curly had passed away
This episode took place in 1947. Two years after the war, the economy wasn't nearly as bad as in the Depression, but it still, 500,000 bucks was worth a whole lot more than today.
Yes Moe curly and Shemp are the Howard brothers. Curly retired from the act in 1946 after suffering a massive stroke on the set of the short film "Halfwits Holiday" so their brother shemp returned to the act to fill the 3rd spot
Shemp is my favorite Stooge!❤ Moe and Shemp are the original stooges who worked with a man named Ted Healy: Ted Healy and his Stooges. Later, they recruited Larry. Shemp didn't want to work with Ted anymore so he left and did a solo career. Shemp and Moe's little brother Jerome joined the group and became Curly. Eventually, Moe, Larry and Curly left Ted and became how we all know them today: The Three Stooges. Sadly, Curly suffered a stroke and Shemp returned to fill in thinking it was temporary, but Curly never recovered so Shemp stayed until he passed away from a heart attack in 1955; Shemp was 60. This episode is one of my top 5.
Christine McIntyre was absolutely gorgeous plus she was an opera singer. I like when she tells shemp “don’t you dare strike me, taking advantage of a poor defenseless helpless woman” but she’s the one giving out all the strikes.
Loved watching this as a kid in the 90's with my dad when they'd air the episodes on Sundays. My face is sore from smiling and laughing so much watching you react to their skits.
At 11:43... I saw on a Documentary on the three stooges that the blonde woman made contact to Shemp's nose with her fist by accident. She actually broke his nose.
Moe: You mean you'll REALLY marry him? Miss Dinkelmeyer: Oh, of course. He's my little ol' dreamboat!! (Shemp looks at her and cringes) Your little dreamboat has sailed (tries to escape while mimicking the sound of a boat horn) Me: X'DDDD
The anxious bride and off-key singer is Dee Green, a real-life music and choir teacher. Christine McIntyre, who mistook Shemp for "cousin Basil" was reluctant to hit Shemp during the slap scene. After several poor takes, Shemp begged her to really let go. She did, and they finally got a finished scene. Finally, Emil Sitka, who id performing the ceremony repeats a handful of times "Hold hands you lovebirds." This phrase is carved on his tombstone.
Joe DeRita (known as Curly Joe) replaced Joe Besser late 1959, after their short subjects contract had come to an end with Columbia, after 26 years. Curly Joe DeRita only appears in the Stooges feature films from late 1959-1965. Adam West who played Batman on the mid 60's TV series, has a major role in their last feature film from 1965, "The Outlaws Is Coming."
The Three Stooges started out with a guy named Ted Nealy in vaudeville . Shemp was in that act then they eventually branched off and went out on their own Shemp was still part of the act but he didn't like the slap - stick and I think he was suffering from depression so that's when Curly joined ! Damn my kind of women 🤪
Hey man I enjoyed your reaction to Dinamohum. One interesting part of it, those background singers were Ike Turner's Ikeets. They were paid $200 each for the sessions
Shemp is actually the oldest of the Howard brothers and was the first brother to perform their vaudeville act on stage in the 1920's. However, Shemp wanted to be a serious actor and left to pursue a solo career in Hollywood. He also was deathly afraid of their business partner, Ted Healey, who often threatened and abused the boys, until Healey was mysteriously murdered in a bar fight. Little brother, (Jerome) Curley took Shemp's place in the comedy shorts in the 1930's, until his death from a stroke. Shemp, then returned to the act, until his untimely death in the mid-1940's. Comedian Joe Besser took up his spot for a decade, until "Curley Joe" DeRita filled in, during the late 50's and 1960's and performing with the Three Stooges in seven full-length feature movies and also a new popular live-action animated TV show in the 1960's, until 1970. Larry Fine was not a family member, but a close family friend of the Howard's. The Three Stooges routines lasted 50 years, spanning vaudeville, shorts, movies and television!
Curly had a stroke in 1946 and retired. He died in 1952 at the age of 48. His oldest brother Shemp took his brother’s place. Shemp dies in 1955 at age 60. Joe Besser replaced Shemp in 1957-1959 until the short films ended. Curly Joe, the last stooges did the movies starting in 1962 . He died in1982 age 83
Kia ora hello my brother from aotearoa new zealand here's something that I'm pretty sure will bring a smile or maybe a chuckle or two to the front of your scone 😊
You know they interviewed them I think whether it was Curly or Shemp being the third stooge,(Can't Remember.) but the point is at one point Moe made a point about them re-doing some of their classics like this one so it would fit with the younger audience today, so what you're watching not to spoil it is the edited remastered version unlike the real version they did long ago we're they cut out much of the violent stunts. But really, as Moe also mentioned, they really don't hurt each when they performed this stunts. They just added special sound effects like you mentioned and special effects to make it extremely funny...
It was crazy the kind of shows they put out back then lol! I'd like to have that many women fighting over me Hahahaaa! Aww man!! Thanks for the Three Stooges Reaction LOL!! I have an old straight razor for shaving that my dad left for me when he died. I'm gonna try it out one day! Hope I don't slit my throat LOL! She was really good! Shemp Replaced Curly when he became ill and that was so upsetting and heartbreaking because Curly was the best of the Stooges overall !!! Jamal, find some stooge videos with Curly in them. Keep bringing that classic comedy. More Three Stooges. More Little Rascals. Have you done Laurel and Hardy? They were the greatest who ever lived and did shorts as well as movies. And finally Abbot and Costello. Did you do Abbot and Costello's "Loafing"? A scream! Oh, yeah, you nailed that one, LOL. That was great. Loafing for making bread, LOL. You "knead" the dough (money) so you can do loafing which is either baking bread...or loafing around? LOL. Just too funny!
"It can't be done. No woman's in interested in me!" "Maybe not pal. But if you look real hard - you might find one who's interested in half a million bucks!!!"
There was this comedian named Ted Healy. Healy was a vaudevillian and comedic actor who has been credited with discovering the Stooges (Moe, Larry and Shemp) in the 1930's. Unfortunately, Healy also had a bad reputation as an abusive asshole especially when he got drunk. Healy didn’t like to be upstaged and if the Stooges got the bigger laugh, they’d pay for it later by slapping them for real on and off stage. Moe stood up to him and he, Shemp and Larry left the act but on their way to their first solo show they received a message from Healy threatening to bomb any theatre they were playing. Moe and Larry knew it was an empty threat but it was enough to give Shemp a nervous breakdown and thats when Jerome aka Curly, the youngest brother of Moe and Shemp came in as a last minute substitute and eventually as permanent replacement. Healy reportedly died in 1941 after getting beaten to death in a Bar Brawl.
The resson why Shemp came in was because Curly had a stroke during the Filming of Halfwit's Holiday. You can see that Curly is missing from the latter half of that episode Shemp was the original part of Ted Healy and the 3 Stooges. Shemp got tired of being abused by Healy and set out on his own during the vaudeville days. That's when Curly (Moe and Shemp's younger brother) came in the act. Seriously look up the history of the 3 Stooges. It's unexpected Watch Hold that Lion. It's the only time all 3 brothers Shemp Moe and Curly are on camera together. Curly is a snoring barking passenger
Shemp was the Original Stooge. Curly came after he didnt want to do it in vaudeville. Curly was the original in the tv shows tho. He just had health issues which made Shemp return. Overall Curly Shemp Moe Larry were the best stooges.
The name of the piece is “Frühlingsstimmen,” a waltz by Johann Strauss II. There’s a version sung by Lucia Popp (the greatest soprano of all time) that you should react to.
Shemp was one of the original members of the Stooges before the shorts he left the group due to Ted Healy who was the original leader. Curly was brought in to replace Shemp (After Curly’s major health problems Shemp returned to the act to help his brother & Larry (Shemp did solo shorts which are actually pretty good) they feel like 3 Stooges episodes but, in a alternate universe/reality! Shemp is in many ways the most misunderstood member of the group due to Curly’s popularity (without Shemp returning who knows if the act would’ve remained so iconic) as a kid loved Curly but, the older i’ve gotten the more i truly appreciate and love Shemp he brought a completely different dynamic to the group imo 👍👍👍
Shemp was more than just a replacement for Curly, he was his own character. He was never afraid to hit back at Moe and Larry, which is something Curly would never do, but it would work because they would just hit him straight back.
Hi Jamel...the punches /slaps 'thrown by the blonde at 11:27 were full force . Shemp asked her to strike him as hard as show could, though the actress (Christine McIntyre) she didn't want to. Shemp insisted so that is what you see...lol
She had trouble getting the timing right, Shemp insisted she lay into him. The punch at the end actually knocked him out for a moment and broke his nose, She tearfully apologized after but he said "I said cut loose and you did, you sure as hell did."
In the movie theaters where they ran these shorts the audience was the laugh track. No need to add one. That only came about with tv where a person sitting alone would be less likely to laugh themselves if no one else was. It provided the atmosphere to relax ..live shows like carol Burnett didn't need them cuz they had a live audience laughing
Curly didn't have cancer, he was diagnosed with hypertension, a retinal hemorrhage and obesity. He was supposed to rest but couldn't get the time off. By 1946 He finally got a break but it didn't help. Then during the filming of Half wits holiday he had a stroke. Shemp agreed to be a temporary replacement until Curly was well enough to return, but Curly never did. He had another stroke in 1948 that left him partially paralyzed and a third in 1951. By then his mental health deteriorated to the point the hospital suggested he be committed to a mental home. About a month later he died 😥
Shemp's real name is Sam or Samuel, tho the Yiddish version is Shmuel.... Their mother, being an Eastern European immigrant, spoke with a thick accent and had trouble pronouncing "Sam" and it came out as "Shemp"... So the nickname stuck.... Overall, i like the "Curlys" better, but this is one of my all time favorite "Shemps"....and ranks right up there with the best of them.... The Curlys were more about "Sticking it to the Man" and were very physical with in your face slapstick...... The "Shemps" on the other hand, tended to be more "dramatic", relatively speaking.... Shemp didn't have the intense physical comedy chops that Curly had (plus, he was 10-15 year older)....and since he was already pretty well established in the feature length movie world, it makes sense why this is so.....
Moe Curly and Shemp are all brothers, last name Howard. Curly had to retire in 1946 following a career ending stroke. More strokes followed and he sadly passed in 1953. Shemp replaced Curly following his initial stroke. Larry is not related. His last name is Fine and he hit it off with the Howard's in vaudville in the late 20's. Shemp died in 1955 and was replaced by Joe Besser, who was in the final 18 or so shorts they made, ending in 1959.
moe, shemp, and curly were all brothers. larry was their friend. at first the 3 stooges were moe, larry and curly. curly had a stroke, so then it was moe, larry, and shemp.. then shemp died and it was moe, larry, and joe besser (for a very short time).. and then he quit the group and they did all their full length movies with moe, larry, and a guy named curly-joe who kind of looked like the original curly... the only 2 line ups i like are moe, larry, curly and moe, larry, shemp
Moe, Shemp, and Jerome (Curly) were brothers. Larry was a close family friend. Shemp was originally in the act (in vaudeville)when he decided to strike out on his own. I just saw Shemp in The Invisible Woman - he was in a lot of films for sure.
@@mr.danandhorror4230 I just saw him the other day in an Abbott and Costello movie called "Buck Privates".
@@honorguarddc9678 oh that’s right! I couldn’t believe that when I saw it as a kid.
Both Curly and Shemp had strokes, probably from the head hits they took from Moe
Exactly right

“You wouldn’t hit a lady with that. Use this, it’s bigger.” Still gets me laughing my ass off after all these years.
I always look forward to seeing someone react to that joke!
😁
Every UA-camr I’ve seen (including the women) laughed hard at that moment!
Emil Sitka plays the role of the Justice of the Peace. The epitaph on his tombstone reads: “Hold Hands You Love Birds’!!
He's a regular supporting player, most fans consider him "the 4th stooge". After Larry passed away, they had plans to continue with Moe, Curly Joe DeRita and Emil playing Larry's cousin "Harry" but Moe passed before it went anywhere.
This is pretty much my all-time favorite Stooges episode. The "ladies" do some serious damage! And there's the press again!🙂
My favorite Shemp two reeler.
My favorite too, in terms of comedy and timing.
"Moe, my head is off, my head is off. Oh, there it is and as pretty as a picture"
Moe's response "Yeah, of an ape" SMACK!
Peace ❤
Ya gotta love the three stooges
In the scene with Miss Hopkins, when she throws a punch at Shemp, Christine McIntyre accidentally struck him too hard and legitimately broke his nose.
Christine didn't want to land those hard strikes but Shemp insisted.
The 3 Stooges are priceless!
Proof of that: literally nearly a century later we're still talking about them.

“That looked like Lucy.” Lucille Ball WAS in a Three Stooges short called “Three Little Pigskins” before I Love Lucy.
She really gave Shemp a workover 😂
One of my favorite Shemp episodes…”Hold hands you love birds…”😂😂😂
The slapping sounds were two planks of wood being smacked together
The line by the Justice of the Peace, " Join hands you lovebirds ", was memorably used by John Travolta in " Pulp Fiction."
Moe: You mean you'll REALLY marry him?
Miss Dinkelmeyer: Oh, of course. He's my little ol' dreamboat!!
(Shemp looks at her and cringes) Your little dreamboat has sailed (tries to escape while mimicking the sound of a boat horn)

Fortunately, they never really hit each other, at least not hard. Camera angles made it look good, and sound effects added to the final effect.
The anxious bride and off-key singer is Dee Green, a real-life music and choir teacher. Christine McIntyre, who mistook Shemp for "cousin Basil" was reluctant to hit Shemp during the slap scene. Everybody loves Curly, but in my opinion, the two best episodes have Shemp in them...
"Scrambled Brains" and "A Snitch in Time".

"It can't be done. No woman's in interested in me!"
"Maybe not pal.
Thanks for the laughs 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
People actually sought that guy out to perform a few real weddings. He would say, "hold hands you lovebirds."
The resson why Shemp came in was because Curly had a stroke during the Filming of Halfwit's Holiday. You can see that Curly is missing from the latter half of that episode
Shemp was the original part of Ted Healy and the 3 Stooges. Shemp got tired of being abused by Healy and set out on his own during the vaudeville days. That's when Curly (Moe and Shemp's younger brother) came in the act.
Seriously look up the history of the 3 Stooges. It's unexpected
Watch Hold that Lion.
GREAT GREAT EPISODE 👍 😂
Shemp was more than just a replacement for Curly, he was his own character. He was never afraid to hit back at Moe and Larry, which is something Curly would never do, but it would work because they would just hit him straight back.
Shemp was once dubbed "the uglyist man in Hollywood" by him manager.
He actually was quite good looking.
In the short Hold That Lion, Moe, Shemp, and Curly are onscreen together. It's the only short to feature all 3 Howard brothers.
And Curly's appearance is just a brief cameo.
He did record a scene for Malice in the palace but it got cut. Apparently his performance was really bad.
Shemp the guy who be smoking the Hemp.
Shemp, Moe, and Curly are brothers. Larry is a friend who joined them
That's not Lucille Ball but Lucille is in a 3 stooges short called (Three Little Pigskins).
It was the Stooges long time favorite, Christine McIntyre
In the movie theaters where they ran these shorts the audience was the laugh track. No need to add one. That only came about with tv where a person sitting alone would be less likely to laugh themselves if no one else was. It provided the atmosphere to relax ..live shows like carol Burnett didn't need them cuz they had a live audience laughing
Curly started having bad health problems and had to stop, so Shemp took over.
Shemp is the oldest brother (he took over when Curly got cancer).
I prefer Curly but this was was my favorite Shemp short.
“Hold hands you lovebirds!”
I hope you can watch the one when a professor tries to make them into gentlemen
The Howard’s real last names were Horwitz.
@@8arrows Yep, Moshe, Shmuel and Jerome Horwitz...
Real last names was Horwitz
Who else besides me wishes that they were Cousin Basil?
moe, shemp, and curly were all brothers. larry was their friend. at first the 3 stooges were moe, larry and curly. curly had a stroke, so then it was moe, larry, and shemp.. then shemp died and it was moe, larry, and joe besser (for a very short time).. and then he quit the group and they did all their full length movies with moe, larry, and a guy named curly-joe who kind of looked like the original curly... the only 2 line ups i like are moe, larry, curly and moe, larry, shemp
Love the old phone
@7:50 She isn't, but it's interesting that you said that because Lucille Ball did play in a few Three Stooges shorts.
You should watch Laurel and Hardy. They came before the 3 Stooges. They started in silent films.
