My life, when it is written, will read better than it lived. Henry Fitz-Empress, first Plantagenet, a king at twenty-one, the ablest soldier of an able time. He led men well, he cared for justice when he could and ruled, for thirty years, a state as great as Charlemagne's. He married out of love, a woman out of legend. Not in Alexandria, or Rome, or Camelot has there been such a queen. She bore him many children. But no sons. King Henry had no sons. He had three whiskered things but he disowned them. [to his sons] You're not mine! We're not connected! I deny you! None of you will get my kingdom; I leave you nothing and I wish you plague- may all your children breach and die! [storms out the corridor, turns and looks back] My boys are gone. I've lost my boys.

Yes, this movie is fiction, but there is a grain of truth to this scene. Phillip was always the smartest guy in the room. He did succeed in tearing the Angevin Empire apart and made the Title of “King of France” actually mean something. There’s a reason he’s known as “Augustus”.

Dalton is a fantastic actor. He doesn't say a word but brings attention just sipping his wine. Guess he knew where to rattle King Henry's chain when he needed to.

The acting in A Lion in Winter surpasses much of what is called fine acting in all of movie history. Peter O'Toole is a force of nature in this role. Hepburn matched his Henry line for line, scene for scene.

What a powerful, brilliant performance. As he speaks, he gradually builds up a facade of rage and bitterness, as if that’s all he’s feeling and nothing else, as if he can live without them. It’s only when he walks away and nobody is watching him that his anger melts and despair takes over with that heartbroken “I’ve lost my boys…” whispered with all the pain of a man bereaved of people who he truly loved and treasured even if he could never admit it.

Me too, I have been a fan of Peter o'toole RIP, since I first witnessed him acting in Goodbye Mr Chips, I was two years old at the time
and am now 43, his legend to acting will never die he was a true character actor through and through gifted with the power of conveying storyline through his eyes in my opinion The greatest actor to live after Sir Ralph Richardson.

Peter O'Toole in this "modern" hollywood obsessed with lust, vulgarity & power your dedication to the true purpose of acting is sorely missed.

They were just as possessed with sex, money and power when they began filming in Hollywood, now however everyone can read, everyone has access to a news device, be it tv, phone or pc and traffic generates ad revenue be it in print, electronically or product placement. If people stop wanting to listen to scandals they'll instantly stop reporting on them to drum up attention for actors and their projects, they'll do what they did back then: have sham marriages, cover ups and have fluff pieces and staged photo opportunities coupled with carefully vetted interviews

Peter O'Toole enjoyed his share of lust, vulgarity and power. By many accounts he was a HORRIBLE person, but a GREAT TALENT.

Didn't know that. I've seen Peter O'toole in High Spirits and some contemporary films. I would like to see more of his classical acting. When I saw this monologue, my eyes went O.O. Heck, I am inspired to be a Shakespeare Actor by Peter.

Shame O'Toole never won an Oscar for any of his performances (he won an honorary one in 2003) despite being nominated 8 times. He should have won here, he goes toe-to-toe with a heavyweight, Kathrine Hepburn, and totally holds his own. He lost to Cliff Robertson for Charly, a very moving performance, but it lacks the gravitas O'Toole shows here.
