Very good video. I was a fruit picker in Locke in the late 50's. Old Man Locke was still alive. He owned all the land in Locke. Isleton was the birthplace of the "Karate Kid" Japanese actor. Courtland was the hiding place for Sun Yet-Sen when he was pursued by the Qing government. The museums were put in place relatively recently for tourism. Nearly all the Chinese in these towns have died or moved out, replaced by others because rent is cheap. All original Chinese in these towns were from Zhongshan County. I could hear from Locke Wan Tse Zhong playing the violin in Walnut Creek's Bing Gung Tong through sound system. Locke's Chinese school had lo fan students as well. All Chinese schools in these towns were donated by Joe Shoong, the wealthiest Chinese in America back then. He also donated the Chung Wah school in San Francisco.

Loved the video. I use to live in nearby Elk Grove when i was about your age. One of my favorite things to do was go to Al the Wops in Locke in the evening hours. I'd have a shot of JD with a Sierra Nevada chaser. Then i would walk along the levee road and watch the sun go down over Mt Diablo. What a dreamy landscape it is. And Locke is a dreamy town. It doesn't take long to find oneself pining for the olden days and simpler times. Thanks for sharing!

I’m surprised you looked for a dedicated rice cooker in the first place…maybe I’m old school but I always just cooked my rice in a pot. I would imagine a large pot or wok or cauldron would work yes?

If you ever want too go see what happens when a Chinatown 'disappears' come to Bakersfield, our downtown had two Chinatowns blocks away from each other that originated two different waves of migration from two bordering counties in Southern China that were located blocks away from each other. Apperently there was blood between the two areas in both China and America leading to a triad war. You can still pick out certain Chinese influenced buildings like the Ying On Benevolent Organisation (tong) building and the former Hong Kong Cafe.

At your intro, it Looks like you’re very close to that famous bar (Fosters Big Horn) that has all those trophy animals! That’s such a unique place as well!! I grew up in Antioch & as a teen my family took lots of day trips all over the Delta & California. I knew about Locke, I was fascinated by the history of the Chinese in California…this was in the 70s the last time I saw Locke…it looks better now than it did then so they must’ve done a lot of preservation & sprucing up ❤️
Nowadays I live in Butte County, northeast of Chico, which is littered with rock walls built by Chinese laborers…Chico also has a thriving Hmong community. Oroville has an amazing Chinese temple & museum & lots of Chinese history from the gold rush era…I don’t know if you’ve covered this area or not but it’s worth looking into 👍

Been to all those chinatowns lately. Locke, iselton, walnut grove. Great experience. I go every spring. The gambling museum locke they say is haunted. You did missed one museum there the 2 story boarding house , its before you get to the school on otherside of street leading to the small parking lot. The chinese built all those levees from stockton all the way to marysville. They also taught the farmers how to farm right as they were having problems.

Hey Jack, glad you were able to visit Locke. If you could bring some attention to Corliss Lee, she is a legacy descendant of the Locke community, and she's in need of a kidney donor. She has a priceless story that needs to be documented. -Fellow APIA Historian/Filmmaker

Locke does not come from Mandarin or Cantonese, it's named after George Locke who let the Chinese laborers build on his land after their section of Walnut Grove burned down in the early 1900s (He wasn't racist either). If you're going to do history on locations you really should get your facts straight...
