It was really cool to see you traveling through Paden. That's the town my grandfather was born and raised, and I only visited once as a kid, so it was great to see it. Had no idea about Boley. Very interesting stuff.
That is really interesting! I wonder how much different the town was back in the day. It’s remarkable the population is almost identical from 100 years ago in Paden. Boley is the tip of the iceberg with the historical black towns in Oklahoma - would be a fun series to find them all!
@@TravelwithaWiseguyStart out with the National Historic Site Nicodemus in Kansas to get an overview of the Black reconstruction settlement towns. There are a lot of neat sites on your route to get there too.
It sure is a good thing you were driving, and not myself. I never would of covered the required miles in the time allowed. I get to wandering around and gucking too much! I fond discovering new areas as way too much cun. Thanks for another great trip! Doggone it, these shortning late fall days just have way to little sun time!
Hey Coach. Road videos are cool. I played the blues song "Route 66" many times as a jazz bassist on the job, that road is one of the coolest aspects pf Americana there is.I don't quite get that articulated water tower at time stamp 1804, but it sure looks very cool. A great blues rock vocalist summed it up years ago ' I don't know what it is I like about it, but I like it a lot. Happy Motoring.
Prague used to have an amazing bakery. I bought German bread there. I have been to Prague in Poland too. Never drive there on Easter weekend. It only took 6 hours to cross the border.
Another comment!😂 Familiar drive- loved Boley, I have some of the same photos, fascinating town! And now you’re in Okemah!!!!😍😍😍 We go to the Woody Guthrie Festival every year, love that little town!!
ON MY TRUCK DELIVERY TRIPS , MANY TO , OR FROM , OKLAHOMA CITY AND TULSA, I RAN MANY OF THESE ALTERNATE ROUTES, AND OFTEN RAN NORTH AND SOUTH ON 99 HIGHWAY, RATHER THAN I-35!!
12:37 the For Sale sign printed on the building has a phone number with a 702 area code. That's Las Vegas. Interesting Investment property, or the owner went wild and moved there 😄
My best friend lives in Choctaw. Been going there several times a year to see her. I was there last weekend and we drove on that road. My girlfriend was born in Paden.
Gee golly, John this was a good trip. I didn't know there were so many spurs of Rt 66. I just knew that it is, out of use, now with only snippets of it here and there. Too bad because I bet it was a fun trip back in the day when Rt 66 was a way to get to California with lovely towns and scenery. And they call I-44 progress? Nope. Rt 66 to me is the best. Thank you for the trip. Happy trails to you and God bless.
@TravelwithaWiseguy Me too. When my Mother and I went to California back in 1979 we took the road from Truth or Conquences New Mexico to Silver City New Mexico it was a two lane road.. I drove all the way through the mountains. It had twists and turns with a speed limit of about 15-20 miles. Only once did a car pass us going the opposite direction and the only rock was about the size of a softball. But Mother was so scared. Today all of the roads where I live are two lanes. I don't like highways where vehicles can go faster than 55 mph. I have but I don't like it. Happy trails to you and God bless.
I grew up in southeast Oklahoma City just buy the southern border of Tinker AFB, school in Del City, workef on Northeast 23rd at the restaurant nearest the capitol, and lived in Spencer before moving to Dallas.
My husband and I really enjoy watching your videos. I have a suggestion for you to travel to. How about Cleveland,Ok. NOT THE COUNTY!lol Btw,I'm originally from Joisey.....yes,a jersey girl is in your comments!lol I met my hubby on Xbox and welp! Here I am in Cleveland,Ok!NOT THE COUNTY!lol I hope you do travel to Cleveland/Westport. I think you won't be disappointed! One last thing. Have you ever traveled to Jersey? Inquiring minds want to know😉 Keep travelin,Wiseguy, safe travels! 😎👍
There's some cool little towns along that route. I can see how sunset caught you before you were done,--- not enough hours in a day sometimes. I hate to say but I was disappointed that Boley's cemetery was so very unkempt. Such rich history should be honored better. Enjoyed the trip, safe travels and GOD bless
I attended Oklahoma City University and lived in the OKC area for a number of years following graduation. I wasn't aware of so much of this "highway history." Thank you for your research and video. Very interesting!
Good to see the population of Boley has gone back up; I thought the contrast between the two graveyards was interesting. Okemah looks nice - I was familiar with Woody Guthrie in terms of his influence on Bob Dylan, but didn't realize he was from OK! The buildings alone in Okemah look like they'd be worth the drive. 😊
Thank you for sharing another great video. We have some of those “hitchhikers might be escaping inmates” signs here in Texas. I was absolutely shocked the first time I saw one.
Got to see the video with no interruptions. Had to chuckle about how long it took you to get out of OKC. The small towns were interesting in the fact that they were booming, went down in population, then some grew again. It is a pretty area with lots of trees everywhere. We have been in OKC 3 times and even though it is nice it was good to get back out to the countryside. Good video.
Sorry I'm late I was off laying on a beach in Mexico. This looks like an intriguing area to explore. there is a song by Ray Wylie Hubbard called Choctaw Bingo.
I wonder if this is the same Choctaw that Bobbie Gentry sings about in "Ode to Billie Joe", there she sings about Choctaw ridge and also the Tallahatchie bridge. This was a hit in the UK in 1967. I see there is a nation of indigenous Americans called Choctaw
The fictional Joad family from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath were from Sallisaw in the eastern part of the state. Their real life counterparts would have taken 266 on their way to 66, the Mother Road that would take them to California for a hoped-for new life during hard times. A lot of history in that part of the country - thanks for sharing your videos.
In that small building you were standing in front of in the background the gentleman football player was Jim Thorpe he went to Carlisle University where he played football he's got quite a history behind him he played against President Eisenhower and Eisenhower said he had a hard time tackling Jim Thorpe
Really interesting video. Jim Thorpe is little known by today’s population. He was an amazing athlete. If you have a chance, check out the 1951 movie, “ Jim Thorpe-All American. It stars Burt Lancaster as Jim Thorpe. Not many of the cast were Native Americans but it does a good job of showing the trials of every day life that Native Americans were subjected to.
Totally off the subject - I just found out by accident that if you press the space bar it speeds up the video. I found this out quite by accident. My plate landed on the space bar and the video sped up. I took it off the space bar and it went back to normal speed. The more you know 🌠
Finally got to watch this video, but still lots of interruptions, so will watch it again. Looked interesting but will comment more after watching it again. 🙄😉😊

You were wise not to enter the restricted area of the tribe. Tribal law enforcement would have ran you off in a rather hasty manner. I'm going to encourage our tribe to use a similar sign. Here is a sample of what you might see: No wiseguys allowed beyond this point, especially that UA-cam guy! Jus playin! 😉
