"12 to 15 inches for me..." Ok, Dan. No need to brag, buddy.😂

You can also heat harden the tent pegs. Over a camp fire. As long as it's live fresh wood.

Superb, and fun fact from my old youtube days: when I called the process of carving a tent peg once as 'tent pegging' in one of my videos, I've got relatively soon a comment from a guy who claimed to be captain of a national team of tent pegging (forgot of which country, sorry). So just be aware (and warned) that tent pegging is a cavalry sport which dates back to the 4th century BC or so, and you should never call carving a tent peg tent pegging if you don't want to start a discussion with very proud men on huge horses. ;-)

Excellent idea! With only an axe, and a block of firewood, you could really crank those out! Perhaps, somewhere small saplings are not available. Just make sure to cut the notch, perpendicular to the grain. Great show! Thanks

    Useful drying tip:
Anytime you reduce wet wood the dry or process begins. The greatest enemy is CHECKING. That's the splitting that happens as it dries. Generally that is caused by uneven drying... The ends dry faster than the center due to open air exposure. To prevent that, you can oil up the ends, notches, etc ... Or paint them. That slows the dehydration speed.
If you recall lumber in the store, the painted ends (that's why!)

Thank you. Just broke a metal tent peg for my canvas tarp camping a few days ago. I cut off a fresh sapling and rounded it all off. After a few whacks I broke it. This is a lot better.
