Superb, and fun fact from my old youtube days: when I called the process of carving a tent peg once as 'tent pegging' in one of my videos, I've got relatively soon a comment from a guy who claimed to be captain of a national team of tent pegging (forgot of which country, sorry). So just be aware (and warned) that tent pegging is a cavalry sport which dates back to the 4th century BC or so, and you should never call carving a tent peg tent pegging if you don't want to start a discussion with very proud men on huge horses. ;-)
Excellent idea! With only an axe, and a block of firewood, you could really crank those out! Perhaps, somewhere small saplings are not available. Just make sure to cut the notch, perpendicular to the grain. Great show! Thanks
Super fancy tent peg!! Definitely have to get out and make some, always fun and bushcrafty carving tent pegs. Almost first to comment again but Angie was talking to me 😂 . Yes I'll like this video have been liking your videos since 2016 and will continue. I check out Coalcracker Bushcraft daily for new items to get. I'm still liking that hat as well, definitely need to make and sell some of them. Another awesome video as always brother thank you for all you do 💪 👍
Useful drying tip: Anytime you reduce wet wood the dry or process begins. The greatest enemy is CHECKING. That's the splitting that happens as it dries. Generally that is caused by uneven drying... The ends dry faster than the center due to open air exposure. To prevent that, you can oil up the ends, notches, etc ... Or paint them. That slows the dehydration speed. If you recall lumber in the store, the painted ends (that's why!)
I enjoy basic field crafts. If you have any more I’d like to see them. I’ve watched plenty of your videos and have picked up a lot of tips and tricks! Thanks Dan👍👍
Thank you. Just broke a metal tent peg for my canvas tarp camping a few days ago. I cut off a fresh sapling and rounded it all off. After a few whacks I broke it. This is a lot better.
G'day Dan, greetings from Australia...Looks great to do around the fire as you said. Side question... what make or brand is your knife...looks easy to handle for this project Cheers
Love this. I have a horse farm, I have tons of oak broken pitchfork handles i am always repurpose. Time to spend the weekend by the fore i suppose. :+)
"12 to 15 inches for me..." Ok, Dan. No need to brag, buddy.😂
You can also heat harden the tent pegs. Over a camp fire. As long as it's live fresh wood.
That’s what I was thinking. Last a little longer.

Wow this reminds me of growing up and camping back in the 1950's. Lol

I feel like a kid again, can't believe I'm watching a video on making pegs ha. Great stuff thanks for posting.

Very nice video Dan!
Cool video
You are on the way to carving and painting woodland elves.
Love this video. Just basic, simple bushcraft. As pure and joyful as it gets.
Now I know what I’m doing this afternoon. Thanks for a great craft project. Keep up the great work.
That Y peg might be useful for layering plants in the garden.
A message of support for this channel and a thumbs up on the video. Thanks so much for the effort to provide such consistently good content.
Good video. Thanks
Great information on maki g your own tent pegs
Heat treat/fire harden it Dan.

Yo Dan, great stuff! So simple everyone leaves it out! So great for you!
Grt video. Thx. Have enjoyed ur videos for a few yrs now & will continue simply because, as u always say, its fun. Luv ur bushcraft store & video's
Make them with Fat Wood, and you can have quick Firestarters in your kit as well.
But what if it's a round hole in the ground?
Nah, I stick to my sticks for tent pegs. Worked every time.
Very cool..fun stuff
Used to make Pegs from Hickory, but found that Sassafras lasts a LOT longer. Good video, Dan...
I know a nice hornbeam of which I'll take four 1 ft branches to produce exactly these pegs.
Thank you so much.
It'll be great!

How to make all the other campers jealous. 😉

Sweet looking knife, looks like something Mors Kochanski would use !
Make them really fancy and carve in your logo and number them.
If one was to go to this effort, I think I would fire harden it in the fire where I was having that beer & whittling… 😊
Cool
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Step aside Sponge Bob ! Make way for Daniel Fancy-Pants !
I wonder if temporing would add strength.
Then you need to put the base paint on follow by the color paint
Any need to fire cure it to add strength or any other benefits?
😀

I made my square pegs but they keep getting stuck in round holes 🤦♂️
Well heck where I live in West by God you ain't driving a stick in the ground unless it's iron
Why square?
Yep about 12 inches is good for me too.....oh, wait, you mean tent pegs. Never mind.
Will we ever see you actually doing a multi-day camp, or just showing stuff, without actually using it for multiple days?
Not everyone has the luxury of doing a multi day camp.
There are plenty of other channels that do that. Dan does what Dan does. 🎉
His multi day camps are paid classes, he provides these short videos for free.
After they dry out coat them with oil. If you want to be real ambitious carve designs. Turn your stick into your schtick.
But you can't put a square peg... In a round... Oh I give up!
Again, why is this punk always out of breath
Brewski and woodcarving; terrible advice
How will a straight tent peg stay put in dry or wet soil?
❤
