Technically, these “Multiverses” aren’t even real in the FF7 universe. In fact, these probably are just memories from dead individuals in the Lifestream from their beginnings to their end. Usually multiverses or timelines can be physically travelled to by a means like a time machine or some device/magic spell. But due to Sephiroth’s shenanigans, they’re disrupted and made to change when it *shouldn’t*. With these changes, they’re automatically set to “Self-Destruct” and collide with each other. Because think about it, if these multiverses exist, wouldn’t Sephiroth go to a universe where no one could stop him? OH WAIT, he can’t. Cause there’s only ONE GAIA and ONE LIFESTREAM. He can’t go anywhere else. These worlds only exist in the Lifestream and NO ONE CAN GO IN IT. It’s basically the Spirit World.
Agreed, there is no multiverse or timelines. Its all in the lifestream. There exists planes of existences within the lifestream created by the planets memories. I have to correct you about one thing tho, Sephiroth can exist in these planes, because we see him with Zack and then with Aerith, but he can not be absorbed into the planet because he is partially made up of Jenova.
@@pandaeyez No you misunderstand from me, that's the thing about Sephiroth that makes him dangerously unique yet where all the stakes stop. He can't travel to any REAL multiverses like a different FF7 Gaia or the other FF worlds (I.E. FF1-17...unless it's like a Dissidia situation lol) BUT he can manipulate whatever he wants in the Lifestream because of the fact that he's part JENOVA as a wanderer.
Wall of text and some spoilers are involved. People are really leaning into the multiverse theory and I honestly don't understand why. Giving Sephiroth the plot point of the Ascian's goal of rejoining the 13 reflections of the source in FFXIV is pretty dumb. OG FF7 always pointed out that people return to the life stream and FF7 Rebirth leans very heavily into the topic of death and the emotions humans go through despite returning to the life stream. The repeated line "It's not death, it's a homecoming" phrase used to celebrate death, not mourn it. So essentially, Sephiroth's goal is to revel in death of all things, as this is apparently something Jenova once did. If we look at the difference between the Cetra and the Gi, the Cetra returned to the life stream while the Gi could not. The Gi created the black materia as they are forced to live as specters after death as they are extraterrestrial beings on the the planet. Their emotions regarding the concept of death is different from the rest of the inhabitants because the long for a true death. The black materia is to meant to basically reduce everything to nothingness. Then there's the whispers, meant to be a guide to keep the planets destiny unchanged. They serve as a meta 4th wall representation to the players about narrative changes to the the stories major events from the original game. However, we see Sephiroth and the Weapons utilize Whispers. White whispers seem to be on the side to protect the planet's destiny, with whispers seemingly infected by Sephiroth's will due to... well... spoilers for anyone that hasn't played the original. let's just say if you know, you know. Anyway, I don't think there's a multiverse. Sephiroth starts doing a lot of meta talk from this point on. The "True nature of reality" would really refer to perceptions of world through the eyes of an individual and "what ifs". "When the boundaries of fate or breached, new worlds are born." From a meta analysis, people take their hopes, dreams, and regrets to their grave. In game, the life stream is also a reservoir of the planet's memories, and by extension, the memories of the people that have returned to the life stream. "Some quickly perish... while others endure." refers to the the willpower of and strength of a persons belief in their convictions . And this case, it's how strongly they hold on to them to them to their death. You see this in Zack. Make no mistake, the man is dead dead. This isn't something that's going to be so easily retconned by something like the multiverse, especially considering he is very prominent in the life stream, along with Aerith, in Advent Children. His hopes, dreams, and conviction endured even after his death, but we see Zack falter a bit when he is forced to choose between saving Cloud or saving Biggs, both that turn out to be nothing burgers. When Cloud states the planet is screaming, and Sephiroth says that he thought he'd finally understand. Maybe this is because Cloud also has the S-Cells in him, but we already know the planet is screaming because Jenova infected the life stream and Sephiroth is manipulating it. But Sephiroth seems to interpret it as screams of joy. This may be why, despite people infected by Hojo's experiments with Jenova's cells, they are able to return to the life stream, despite having genes that from something not of the planet. "Let go of the past, Cloud. We are the bear witness to the reunion of worlds" more meta commentary to the player that this version of the Reunion Theory is different from the OG. With more talk of the promise land in Remake and Rebirth, and specifically with Rebirth as a title for a game that focuses very much on death and loss; I believe Sephiroth's goals are very simple. Especially after we see the part of the ending with Rufus. Sephiroth wants forcefully enter the promised land by using the meteor to do something very ironic. Remove individual perception to accept the actual reality of death. Through accepting death, there is nothing to mourn. Instead of defying fate, accept that death is the fate of all things. He is actively challenging the planet to except this reality of it's death in a celebration to throw open the gates to the promised land, which he feels is his birthright and by extension, it 's satisfying Hojo's scientific hypothesis of the new version of the Reunion Theory. Edit: Forgot to also link the other part of what he means by worlds. This could signify the joining of life and death. Immortality, but in a way unlike the Gi. Not of just spirit but of flesh as he doesn't suffer from degradation, unlike other SOLDIERs. TLDR; I don't believe in the multiverse theory. Sephiroth's goals are slightly different, but he is ultimately repeating the same actions. The outcome of the remakes will more or less still come out the same, just recontextualized.

I see more people complaining because multiverses are overplayed at this point, mainly because of marvel fucking it up in the past few years. Being bored of the concept doesn’t make it bad by default.
its not necessarily multiverse though. The planet encompasses many "worlds". multiverse isnt exclusive to one planet, its multiple universes. These "worlds" are likely planes of existences within the lifestream created by memories and knowledge of the planet.
This multiverse trope is only special for the first time when whoever pulled this stuff. Now everyone and their moms want to use this tired trope in their movies/video games and it's aggravating as fuck at this point.
Agree so much. OG had impact at the heart, people died. This multiverse bullshit is a slap in the face. Call the “remake” a sequel and then so be it…. But the writers are not, they are saying it’s the original but current with todays times. Bullshit, why is everyone so against death in these types of stories?? Zack died, Avalanche members were killed along with many innocents in 7. Aerith died. Dude needs to go write another ridiculous kingdom hearts story since he already butchered that beyond reason
@@timothyhanlon2171yeah, Zack and Aerith death now is pointless lol. So in another timeline they are fine. What is even the point. The stake is not so high after all.
I want this to end with Sephiroth kinda getting his way. A new world forms everyone’s happy but Sephiroths dead and we get a goddamn explanation for the end of dirge with genesis popping up somewhere
It's hilarious that people shit on this aspect of the game without realising the "multiverse" was mentioned in the original game as well. The Lifestream is some sort of "hive mind" of all the possibilities and has the power to store/show the outcomes of any possible choice. The Remake Trilogy is simply expanding on that aspect.
First off, there is no time travel mentioned at all, secondly, technically multiverse is not actually exactly mentioned either. Whats most likely the case, and this is suggested by the devs, is that the "worlds" being referred to are just planes of existences within the lifestream formed by the planets memories. So its just planes of the lifestream.
Sephiroth said about the white matter that Aerith gave: A very poor form. That is, both black and white matter have a charge, respectively, of hatred and love. Cloud was left with an empty Holy Materia at the end of the game.
he said its poor form because Cloud and Aerith essentially cheated black and white materia is not about hatred and love. The black materia was created by the Gi to destroy them, the white materia was created by the ancients to counter it, thats it
Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to inject the multiverse into FF7? Why did it need a multiverse angle? The story was perfectly fine without it. Every movie, comic, and video game that injected this concept became dumber for it. Its a tired troupe that needs to die.
@@pandaeyez lol ultimania guidebook for rebirth confirms the multiverse plot lol.... Even that jung's collective unconscious theory and Buddhist yogachara leveled up the multiverse concept to outerverse lol
You know it lol. Wouldn't surprise me if part 3 include a alternative ending where they leave room for a part 4 in the future if they ever want to revisit it.
It’s hilarious how people keep saying that when he’s literally saying they all merging into one , that’s his plan and yet people miss that with multiverse theory .
In practice yes, but I’m pretty sure people are fatigued from the multiverse being in everything. Personally I’m fine with it as long as it is handled properly.
sadly...like come on, this is getting weird adding the whole multiverse in. They should've JUST had Zack crossing over to the main timeline of Remake, not having this multiverse stuff
@@pandaeyez different possible realities that we as the player are experiencing or in the very least “being exposed to” might as well be multiverse. I love it and the direction and the gameplay. (Maybe more story instead of openworldness for me) I am genuinely curious and don’t know what may happen I love it. But the story could’ve used some more drafts.
@@wiseguy240Winston They are more like "back ups". The Planet can't manipulate destiny to protect itself anymore so it's going with probability to produce as many potential saviors as possible. So far its a failing strategy because Sephiroth can and seemingly has visited numerous of these alt timelines and still kills important people.
And to make matters worse is that Nomura was holding back the multiverse storyline for the remakes. That’s right. The guy who has been laughed at for making convoluted Kingdom Hearts stories was the one holding back but since you guys hated his ass. We are going to get a multiverse story.
These ain’t timelines, it’s MEMORIES. Understand that? The Lifestream is made up of memories of people’s whole lives before returning to the Lifestream. I thought it was alternate timelines myself until I thought “Wait…this isn’t how multiverse or alt timelines stuff works…this seems different.” When I think of alt timelines, I think of time travel and different changes by BEING at a time period or event to make the changes. When I think of multiverses, I think of something like the Spider-verse where EVERYTHING is different including events and it’s unique to itself. Because multiverses or timelines don’t fucking die out every time a change happens. Remember Sephiroth’s quote in Advent Children, “I will never be a memory.” He is killing memories to gain the path to GODHOOD.
So Sephiroth took out Aerith, because she posed a threat towards his plans. She seen right through him the entire time. He wanted to manipulate Cloud's direction, but the only one that could see right through him the most was Aerith. So he took out the party's eyes👁️which was her.
Exactly!!!!
Fuck…..I’m so sick of seeing people complaining about multiple timeline bs. When that’s obviously not it at all.
Now Cloud is an Avenger!
I love the remixed city of the ancients theme. Is the soundtrack out anywhere?

I see more people complaining because multiverses are overplayed at this point, mainly because of marvel fucking it up in the past few years. Being bored of the concept doesn’t make it bad by default.
its not necessarily multiverse though.
The planet encompasses many "worlds". multiverse isnt exclusive to one planet, its multiple universes.
These "worlds" are likely planes of existences within the lifestream created by memories and knowledge of the planet.
Love the added depth.
I don't care about other ff7 fans, i love multiverse stuff and i loved this game so much. Can't wait for part 3!!

Multiverse and time travel again.
Cloud was left with an empty Holy Materia at the end of the game.
he said its poor form because Cloud and Aerith essentially cheated
black and white materia is not about hatred and love. The black materia was created by the Gi to destroy them, the white materia was created by the ancients to counter it, thats it
I see it more as timelines than universes
So much for being a remake
A remake does not necessarily mean exactly the same, as you can remake something into something else.
It never was
I guess if we see Sephiroth in others games is all part of a alternative timeline.

Sephiroth uses that as an example of a world that "quickly perishes"

Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to inject the multiverse into FF7? Why did it need a multiverse angle? The story was perfectly fine without it. Every movie, comic, and video game that injected this concept became dumber for it. Its a tired troupe that needs to die.

Ngl this generally ruined the story for me.
How? You ran around as Zack in an alternative timeline half a dozen times before this even happened.
@Babylauncher3000 I thought they'd only make it 2 timelines but instead they went full multiverse smh
I thought it was alternate timelines myself until I thought “Wait…this isn’t how multiverse or alt timelines stuff works…this seems different.”
When I think of alt timelines, I think of time travel and different changes by BEING at a time period or event to make the changes. When I think of multiverses, I think of something like the Spider-verse where EVERYTHING is different including events and it’s unique to itself.
Because multiverses or timelines don’t fucking die out every time a change happens.
Remember Sephiroth’s quote in Advent Children, “I will never be a memory.”
He is killing memories to gain the path to GODHOOD.
So Sephiroth took out Aerith, because she posed a threat towards his plans. She seen right through him the entire time. He wanted to manipulate Cloud's direction, but the only one that could see right through him the most was Aerith. So he took out the party's eyes👁️which was her. The icing on the cake was the White Materia he noticed in Cloud's hand.
