Is the Mosfet a Mosfet or something like a Yx805, and the resistor is it possibly a inductor? If so yank the battery ASAP. Possibly the battery was just a cheap Ni-cd.
That was probably more a transistor than a mosfet. I would have to go back and look. I actually replaced those lights because I've never been happy with them and I wanted something with a more proper charging circuit.
