**QUESTION** Hello, Suzanne - I found you from Roxanne Richardson’s UA-cam channel and so very glad I did! My QUESTION is concerning adding an I-cord edge to the garter edge of shawl, where there is a stitch increase at the end of every other row. How do you calculate how many I-cord rows to compensate for the increased sides of the fabric? The shawl I’m knitting is the Butterfly Shawl and although I’ve not completed it yet I’d love to finish it off with an I-cord bind off and continue the I-cord around the 2 selvedges, eg from top left corner, over the cast on and across to the right corner. I hope this question makes sense and thank you again for your time and for sharing your expertise. Jackie

This is a great question. First you would knit a regular i-cord several inches long. then measure how many rows you are getting to an inch. Measure the edge of your garter stitch shawl and see how many garter bumps you are getting to the inch. then you will know how often you need to add a i-cord row. For example if you are getting 5 garter ridges to the inch and 7 rows of i-cord. you will want to add two extra i-cord rows in every inch (distributed of course).

Suzanne, it is obvious that teaching is your passion. I remember when you first started these livestream videos and how you mentioned that it was a little uncomfortable as an introvert. You handled it admirably back then, and we've watched you grow in both technology and comfort level. Today as I watched this, I thought, "THIS is where she is most comfortable - TEACHING!" Nicely done! I love the short teaching tutorials, but I look forward to more of these teaching livestreams also. I'm completely confident your on-line knitting bootcamp will be a hit as well.

Thank you so much. I think when I am teaching, I forget that everyone is watching.

In case you haven't found it... if chatters type @Suzanne - Off the Cuff exactly as you have it spelled, spaced and capitalized, it will highlight it in orange for you.

You might want to mention that the compensation would be different if you're following a diagonal edge (like on a triangular shawl) rather than just across rows or columns. I had to figure that one out the hard way. I got screwed by a slip stitch edge on that too...

Hi Suzanne, thank you so much for this video. I love your thoroughness. I might have missed it, but I was wondering... do you have to compensate for stitch to row gauge, when you do the I-cord Bind-off?

It is definitely something to think about. Check out my other videos on I-cord - ua-cam.com/play/PLLKJ9GuhEEwlqXllQGaN7VToc2qNjqMJ9.html

I'm learning a lot from this series well all your series so thank you. I did Steve west shawl Vertices United and it had applied icord. I understand now why he had you do what he did. Some were live stitches n some you picked up and now I understand the extra stitches he had us do cause of gauge so thanks so much and yes we knitted through the back loops.
Also I've did all my homework and figured it was best to watch you first then come back rather than trying to knit with you and I was able to accomplish all the stitch types. The one with button hole my purl row is to loose. I think because of fidelity of technique so I think I will like this applied method better for me. I will do homework.
I'm actually working on a bonnet by tincanknits with icord knit as you go but it's next to garder stitch. Now nothing in pattern about short rows. Would they be necessary?
Last question I'm knitting a 85% cotton 15% alpaca summer top which at bottom is very flowy n very long. Pattern says ribbing for end but I was thinking icord. Will icord be flowy or is it more ridged making fabric go straight? I think you'll say swatch it but I'm not sure how. Hope this makes sense.
Your hair is looking great keep at same length looking so pretty. You looked like you might have a little makeup on today or could be color from the hot sun either way looking good on camera. I look terrible on camera. I give you goodoes. Thanks again

Thank you so much! I think the i-cord might be a little stiff at the bottom, but yes, swatch. And for the bonnet, maybe not add the short rows, as you want the cap to pull in around the head a bit, but again, swatch. Also look at other's projects on Ravelry and see if you like how the i-cord looks. Happy knitting, Carol.

Thank you for your short videos and for these livestream chats and interviews. Just love your new software that lets you show in the corner and shows your hands with the Elmo. Would you share what software you use? It is great. You are great! what a pair!

QUESTION: Would starting with a provisional cast on then coming back and doing an i-cord bind off give you nice i-cord on the cast that eliminates the enlarged stitches? Not sure if it would be any faster than knitting the i-cord first and then picking up stitches.

    • @SuzanneOfftheCuff
      @SuzanneOfftheCuff  4 роки тому

Exactly. That is a great way to get a good looking i-cord "cast on".

Suzanne....when you have a video that is more than a half hour long....i don't think viewers would mind if you just quickly mention to subscribe and like every 20 to 30 minutes as long as you take 10 seconds or less....but yeah....a 2 to 3 minute commercial could get annoying

If you did the short row corner as short row, linked row, short row, rather than linked row followed by 2 short rows you wouldn't have that hole if you pull the fabric... Yes, I tend to be that anal about my knitting... lol
