I was stationed there in 1963-64. My favorite thing was snorkeling every Saturday and Sunday with my buddies. The water was so clear it was like being in a giant aquarium. So beautiful underwater. My job, military police.
I spent a year on Midway with the Navy back in 1974/75. Beautiful place! I had the opportunity for a 1-week return visit in April of 2001. Quite a change from the Navy days. They say "You can't go back." and it's true!
It's interesting you would notice that. It was such a stunning morning arrival. I couldn't take my eyes off that beautiful horizon and the amazing clouds.
When worked there in 2009/10 We flew in a antiquated Gulfstream built in 1962.......The arrival and departure was during the night so as to minimize the changes of a bird strike with a Albatross, which could ruin your day! Great video, arrival was from the west, the cargo pier and the old water barge were very visible as was spit island.
@@MyEarthEcoNut I knew that they used it to rotate people in and out of the wildlife refuge, but I didn't think of it like that. Makes sense that it would be operated to allow emergency landing to happen.
whaty yr was this landing? there were no runway lights when i was there. once a night c5 landing all the bases cars ,trucks had to fall out . to light it up..i was there with my dodge 69, pickup.navy gray..2 am..
This was 2011. There were lights at this time. This is a link to my first landing at Midway which was done at night because of the birds. ua-cam.com/video/M52bNeiBrK0/v-deo.html
Wow, didn’t know those had the range. Question:was this aircraft a DC-9 Super 80 , or if MD80 general designation for all the MD80 types, was this actually an MD-81,82,83,87,88 etc?
This is a Japanese MD-81 so it has the standard tanks. We made it direct to Cold Bay once. Range to Midway is not too bad. This was one of a group of 16 MD-81s that came over.

Hula Girl on the glare shield panel nailed it 🤩
Flying an MD-80 over open ocean with no emergency landing option - now that is scary!
OMG....look at that sky on the approach in the beginning.
It's interesting you would notice that. It was such a stunning morning arrival. I couldn't take my eyes off that beautiful horizon and the amazing clouds.
I flew in there in a Constellation in 1960 US Navy.
You were in the most beautiful airplane that ever flew. Congratulations!

I like the hula girl on the dash! Very appropriate.
Landed there 4 times when I was in the Navy 72 to 75 transiting from Adak to Honolulu
It’s a dream of mine to go there. I hope there are flights there when I get older.
Forgot it the fish and wildlife have it as a private Island ,..Too bad it's beautiful
Mr Fraser that was some good landing. As someone who hates flying .. You pulled in like you were driving a car👏👏.
The MD80 was a comfortable ride
I miss flying it.
NICE
It's abandoned today!!!!!!! Bring it Back to the Navy!!!!
Its not abandoned and has remained an active airfield. Its part of a system that makes trans-pacific flights possible.

@xptwillie How does that remotely apply to anything in the video?

@@eprn1n2 Nice! Thanks!
Where did the MD-80 come from?
Mars????
Tokyo.
They landed KC-130s on Bikini because of all the nuclear testing they did here in the 1950s.

I measured on goggle maps. One of them is 1.5 miles long, the other is 1 mile.
