    That was an awful lot of effort to completely ruin an antique.

    YOU PAINTED IT????? WHY? Why.. You ruined a potentially gorgeous antique with crappy spray paint. :(

    What were you thinking... So sad, especially because the other tools with this wheel are so rare. Please consider researching what these items looked like when new, and how they were used, before putting so much time into "restoring" them.

      That poor old wheel. Completely fecked up. Like taking a very old coin and polishing it - or cutting off the edges of and antique stamp.

      @@tineditmarunnerup9513 Unfortunately, this vid is the poster child of remuddling. But, the guy has an interest and tools and maybe with some encouragement and experience, someday he'll start over with this poor old wheel.

    I regularly renovate spinning wheels of this age and more, and I am not alone! Why is it covered in all that moss and lichen - was it put on for decoration? Could you have thought to remove it before you started on the woodwork or was it more dramatic to leave it in place? Sorry, I simply don't believe this video - the wheel could have been treated more gently, renovated with better understanding of its function and finished in an appropriate manner - as it looks at the end it might as well have been made of plastic.

      I agree with you 100%. Calling this a restoration is a misnomer. Its a travesty, what was done to these unique objects. I hope this video will not mislead people into believing that this is what professional antique restoration looks like. The wheel looks ready for a brief stint in a play Sleeping Beauty, but as a result of this "pro's" work on it, it lost tremendous value. Distaff included. What a hodgepodge!

    I agree with the other comments- a beautifully restored spinning wheel became something tasteless and cheesy with paint job. Why would you put on a paint that had an antique finish when the wheel was already an antique. Simple varnish would have served much better

    The reason I found this video in the first place is because I got first spinning wheel that I’m trying to restore. Some idiot painted it with crackle paint to make it look like an “antique”. Now instead of being able to sell it for a couple hundred dollars, he was happy to find someone to take it for free.

    While I understand not liking the paint job, how does that equate to ”ruining” this wheel? Antique wheels were commonly painted, just because the paints chipped off by now doesn’t mean they didn’t have a paint job to begin with. I’d definitely recommend trying to restore this wheel to functional, and maybe one day you’ll come back to it. Don’t let mean comments stop you! You liking the most negative ones gave me a real kick though 🤣 I promise there are spinners out there willing to help you learn to spin! Just remember when you paint your wheel that it’s about what YOU like and YOUR aesthetic choice, it doesn’t matter what others think. They can do whatever they want with their own wheels.

    I was enjoying it until the spray paint.... I normally allow spinners to paint their wheels in colors as they please but you completely ruined all that beautiful hand tooled detailing and made the wheel completely unusable. these are tools that many people still use today and you made it into a living room dust collector.

  • @jenthulhu
    @jenthulhu 11 місяців тому +7

    I wish I hadn't watched this. I'm a handspinner and very familiar with how spinning wheels work. This wheel was rendered unusable because of one of the choices made when this "restorer" put it back together (he hammers a peg into a hole, flush with the table, that is meant to be easily removable. It's meant to be in place so the mother of all is locked into place once the tension is adjusted. But it needs to be removed so the tension can be adjusted every time a new drive band is put on the wheel.) In addition, if someone were actually restoring this machine they would have made the parts that were actually missing--the flyer and bobbin. The leather bearings wouldn't have been painted either. They need to be able to absorb oil. The finish wouldn't have been my choice, but that's personal preference and while it would be difficult, the paint could be removed. However, playing around with a machine of this age--a literal piece of history--while not understanding its function… it really seems a waste.

    I lost my shit when you painted it… but, you saved it from the trash. And worked really hard to bring her back to life. In the “spinning community” it’s pure horror when people paint their wheels. Secretly, we cringe when we see a painted spinning wheel. That being said, I’m SURE someone bought this. It does look beautiful. Great work.

    • @RachelAndersonTMD
      @RachelAndersonTMD 11 місяців тому +1

      It's for combing flax/linen prior to spinning - it's quite unusual to see this with a wheel, hence some of the comments. There's a different technique for spinning flax vs. wool because flax isn't "grabby" like wool is. Flax is also spun wet, and often from a distaff (like a pole, with the flax wrapped around it), leaving the hands free to manipulate and wet the fibre coming out of the distaff.

  • @oldschoolwoolandweavingcen4060

    Here's the thing....I have...and use.. and teach others to use -200 year old looms, spinning wheels and related equipment as well as vintage and antique sewing machines. There is NO SHORTAGE of them, they were made in the millions and many survive in questionable condition today. Unless there is a historical reason to preserve it as is, then conserving it is acceptable particularly if it will be used. In my opinion all of the aforementioned antique textile tools last longer when used regularly and well maintained. Repainting one out of all of those pitiful castoffs that are misunderstood, abused and neglected being turned into lamps etc. is no sin. If the owner is pleased then well done! There are plenty of other damaged wheels out there with way more historical significance that deserve to be restored to original. Not every old spinning wheel is valuable as evidenced by the fact they languish in attics, basements and garages.

  • @myklebustsears
    @myklebustsears 2 роки тому +4

    A wheel without a flyer is arguably dead anyway, so the harm is less than if you'd done this to a working wheel.
    Taking a sander to that exquisite sitting distaff and then spray painting it is a crime against your culture. Stomach-churning.
    Please don't do this again.
