My grandfather used to have a TV repair shop back in the day, but passed away years ago and even fixed vacuum tube electronics, although I don't have enough experience with tube electronics and only transistorized electronics for the most part.

was working on a Technics 1200MKIII yesterday.. what a world of difference. this Sansui looks like it was cobbled together as an afterthought affixed to plastic shell. gross. Imagine the feedback from zero damping - and all those things that can go wrong.. excellent work though you nailed it.
the FR line are often not worth the time to repair because of the broken plastic clutch assembly. nice to see one saved by flipping the drive washer. not even the belt was bad. way to troubleshoot it and make a simple and free repair. its a pretty decent sized table if I recall correctly. i like the integrated strobe location on a few of the models from this period.
I had a fully automatic Sansui turntable from new with that same mechanism and it forever gave problems moving the tone arm even after being repaired under warranty.
Nice work! I've never been a fan of auto turntables that completely isolate the tonearm movement from the platter. The tonearm mechanisms are just to finicky and don't seem to hold up over time. I've had no trouble with models like older Technics that have a tonearm movement mechanically connected to the movement of the platter. Much simpler design.
I like the sneaky flipped washers, i've done similar with slipping drives/clutches/brakes and band belts. I always enjoyed making something work by sneaky methods :-D Better than wasting a device for a silly fault.
Nice repair job, I like the look of it. Can't you cut slits in the mat for the sensors ? What was the first tune you played ? I recognise it from an old film or a TV show. I had an old BSR automatic record player in the 70's, the lift part of it was broke. When it returned the arm after playing, it would drag the needle across the record. LOL.
No it won't because it won't start manual. This one is automatic only it will not start without pushing that start stop button. If you lift the arm it will not start spinning. when you press to start button it will automatically move the arm to the start position and if the unit does not detect that the arm has moved it will stop spinning. It's a stupid design like most of the crap that sansewage crapped out.
@@12voltvids The reference was to the old 1960's-70's BSR auto-changing record players in my original comment. These modern decks can be a nightmare if something goes wrong.
Your friend is lucky, he will certainly pay more for a cartridge and shell, plus a new rubber mat with holes punched at the right places for the optic detectors. Normally, the original mat certainly had some sort of ridges to prevent it to slip freely, you can replace them with thin Velcro pads. If you find this Sansui complex, you will certainly be surprised by the complexity of other models, Sony or Denon are far more complex: linear motor for rotation or a complex assembly of two motor plus clutches and optical switches everywhere, automated weight and antiskate mechanisms and so on. Plus you generally have to hold the chassis up right and horizontal while testing, when you don't want some heavy platter to fall on delicate and pricey cartridges. I've made a special wood bench with a special holding bracket to maintain the chassis while inspecting the undersides using a mirror and lighting, very useful for many of these "discs spinners". If you have many records to clean, you can invest in a ultrasound cleaner and add some rotating support. Whatever the method you use to clean your records, don't forget to replace the paper pouches. You can guess the old ones are dust bags ready to pollute back vinyle surfaces.
I have a Sansui linear tracker, it is DD and of course no interaction with the tone arm directly it's an okay TT the only issue is when the tone arm moves as the vinyl is playing I can hear the movement (as a low frequency as it is keeping itself lined up with the particular area of the vinyl. They have the entire assembly move with the tone arm, it's a heavy plate with drive motor circuit board and tone arm assembly and the whole thing moves. Strange design for sure. In my opinion it is the cause of the thunking sound I heard in quiet portions and between songs. Certainly not like a silent swivel tone arm. I do have am album that I detect the sound of the cutting lathe its mechanical movement. Very faintly but I can still hear it on that specific album, I don't notice cutting lathe noise on any other album just that one album.

I'd say your friend scored a very good deal. Vintage receiver and a nice direct drive turntable for 40 bucks!
I am sure he will sell it to some sucker and it will run for awhile then break again. Some idiot will over pay for this garbage.

It's a standard headshell. Most are the same. Dual was different as we're a few others.

I would have removed the metal cog under the turntable, and now its manual lol.

@@frankowalker4662 the old dual about the only things that went wrong was Grease drying up on the cam gear and the stuerpimple wearing down.

I don't play much vinyl. I have a few turntables but don't use them much. I play CDs mostly.
