  • Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champ Joey Logano explains the immense financial cost of pursuing a career as a NASCAR driver, and how lesser-known drivers are actually spending money to race in the circuit. He says the current system doesn’t allow for the most talented drivers to reach the top, as it requires a particular set of skills but also access to significant pools of money. Plus, Logano praises NASCAR for stepping out of the box with new race locations and remembers a collective frustration with safety issues surrounding the Next Gen car.

The Rusty Wallace of our generation. Nicest guy off the track but the most aggressive, one of if not the most talented, can whoop your ass on any track in the sport.

Joey is a great Champion. Was almost out until Brad Kesekowski helped convince Mr. Penske to bring him on. Could you imagine if JGR gave him another couple years in the 20? They may have had four or five championships instead of just KB's 2.

Same in F1. Same in WEC/sportcars. Same in Indycar. Money gets drivers rides, now, and talent is an afterthought. MotoGP is better than the others in this respect, but not by much.

The nepotism clause really should've been enacted in NASCAR HQ. Maybe the sport would still be going very strong.

@John Nyquist Richard and Kyle Petty, Dale Sr, Bobby Labonte, the Bodine's, and Wallace's started out in the days before big money came in throwing around cubic dollars to go faster.
And for all of them, there were dozens of others who pieced together a car, showed up at the track, and got in the show hoping to get a break.

Nascar TV deal is 8.2 Billion with the Tracks getting 65% Nascar gets 10%
And 25% to the Teams!! Remember Nascar owns most of the Tracks with Bruton Smith owning the others and a few single owners
So basically 75% of the 8.2 Billion is for the France family!!
Same As those Silly Cashback commercials wow 5% cashback
Give me a Dollar and I will give u a Nickel and keep the Rest!!

The trouble with making changes trying to control costs, is the teams just spend the money on different technology.
No testing? OK, they 3d scan the track and build a shaker rig.
No practice? OK, time for a better simulator.
A time machine to send a list of technologies to prohibit back to about 1990 is about the only way to really reduce costs today.

I'll keep saying it. The biggest issue is the public as a whole has become too poor for things like brand loyalty to favorite drivers sponsors to make those massive sponsorships worthwhile. The majority of states races are held haven't had a min wage increase in 15yrs. Want those sponsorships to come back support politicians who want to increase wages, lower healthcare cost thru single payer ins, bringing the corporate tax rate back up to 40-60% like when the country was most prosperous. When it doesn't cost anything to keep the money, companies won't spend it. Politics effects everything, like it or not.

Years ago, drivers like Petty, Earnhardt, and now Johnson, invested in a team and NASCAR. Gordon got stock in Hendrick Motorsports. Nowadays, all drivers have the mentality of Hurray for me, F*** You. And Nascar turned it's back to the true fans to search for greener grass.
