Great documentary. The story of Breogán is really interesting. According the legend, he climbs the tower at A Coruña to see the coast of Ireland from there. Actually, from A Coruña to Ireland, the distance is 900 km. To "see" such a distance you need to climb to the top of a tower approximately as high as 60-65 km (earth is round!). I mean, to see Ireland from Spain, you should either live in a legend or you should be a flat-earther. :)
Obviously, it is a legend, with its fantastic and mystical elements. But like all legends, it has a part that is real. It is a legend repeated in both lands throughout history. There are numerous stories that repeat the same pattern, Paulo Osorius, Trezenzonio, King Cadelo, etc. This confirms something that is already known, from linguistics and archeology, that the Celts of Ireland and Spain are very possibly from the same root.
@@celtico Ah, from that perspective they are indeed. There is a theory related with the migration from east to west. Starting with 500 BC util maybe 300-400 AD, mainly because of the changing weather conditions and landscape, many different clans/nations migrated from Asia steps to west. Like domino stones one nation pushed the other toward the west. Many scholars believe that celtic roots are reaching to Sarmatians, even Scythians and Cimmerians. Later, during the migrations these clans (GALATIANS) used both northern Pontus road (North of BlackSea) and Anatolian road (Turkey today). At Turkey's capital city Ankara, the old city castle built by Galatians. You can find their remains at Gallipoli (today's Canakkale - Turkey) and also at Galata (Istanbul - Turkey). Some did stay, most continued toward Europe, took the control of Greece, then Carpatia, then moved to France (Gaul and Brittany) and ofcourse Spain (Galicia) and eventually Ireland and other Britain islands. Celtic cultural legacy is all around Europe and western Asia. I am half irish, half turkish. I ve grown up in Turkey until my university years, then moved to Ireland, then UK, France, back to Turkey and now living in Germany (Saarbrücken). I had the chance to listen/read/study these stories from many different sides. I consider myself lucky. Not all the stories are that fun ofcourse. Roman Empire's Gallic wars were maybe the most agonizing and painful part of Celtic History. I often think, if Julius Caesar wouldnt massacre more than 3 millions Gauls, how it would be the celtic population today. People don't use the term, but from my perspective, it was quite a genocide. I respect the work you did here, my friend. I wish you the best. Mainly success in your works and definitely health during these daring times.
@@arldoran Thanks for your words, although the video is not mine, it is from an association called Gaelaico, which is dedicated to the study of the Galicia-Ireland connection. There are several theories about Celtic expansion in Europe, the traditional one that talks about hallstatic expansion, has become obsolete. Without a doubt the migrations come from the Black Sea as you have well indicated. But at that point, two theories are separated, the traditional one that would be east-west, with a Central European expansion, and then to Gaul, Britain and Iberia, and a different one that would be the expansion through the Mediterranean by sea to the Atlantic, where these populations create a "lingua franca" of the Atlantic trade, which would be the proto-celtic language, and which would expand from the Atlantic coast to the east and which would end in its maximum expansion with the Galatians of Turkey. This theory is the most defended right now in British and Spanish universities, and is called Celts from the West. I recommend that you investigate, you will find very interesting things
@@celtico Roman historian Titus Livius mentions the Tectosages clan (tectosages means fortune-seekers) being a part of Volcae union of clans, Volcae was from Gaul. During the eastern invasion, according to Strabo, they divided from Volcae because of some quarrels, then moved to Balkans, combined with two other celtic clans; Tolistoags ve Trocmians. But before this move, a small part of Tectosages and moved (probably built) to Tolosa (Touluse today). All three clans together attacked to Delfi of Greece first, then reached to Dardanelles, fought 5 years as mercenaries in the army of Nicomedes 1st and eventually after the agreement between Nicomedes and Mithridates, they ve been given the part of eastern Phrygia (central Anatolia today), which was named as Galatia. Their capital was Ancyra, which is Ankara today. Unfortunately today very few remainings left from such a culture. Still Galatian Celts were much more luckier than Gauls. PS.: I will definitely check the Spanish articles related with the "from west to east" movement. I thank you for the advise.
@@arldoran The best-known articles on this theory are the books of Professors Barry Cunliffe and John T. Koch. I also recommend the Spanish Professor Ramon Sainero. There are surely some layers of Celtic culture and genetics among the Turks. Are there areas in Turkey where there is prevalence of the R1B phenotype?
