Las Cinco danzas gitanas Op. 55 fueron compuestas entre 1929 y 1930, cuando el compositor ya había regresado a Madrid. Es una de las obras más célebres de Turina y han sido adaptadas a muchos instrumentos, además de la orquestación que el propio Joaquín produjo también en 1930. Su nombre original era «danzas gitanas», el número le fue añadido después. En el primer manuscrito, las danzas Generalife y Sacro-monte estaban en orden inverso, pero el compositor lo alteró antes de que fueran publicadas. Están dedicadas a José Cubiles (1894-1971), gran amigo de Turina, que sería precisamente el pianista que las interpretase en público por primera vez.

Love this piece! Such passion and different temperaments from loud and scary to very tiny and cute. It actually inspired me to make up a story for my little sister about a fierce dragon who chased a princess and she was completely mesmerized by it while I told the story while playing the piece :). Years later she told me she still remembered it and now I got back to this piece.

In the description of the video it says that the pieces were composed for piano initially, dedicated to the pianist Jose Cubiles. Then afterwards it was arranged for several other instruments, and in 1930 Turina made an arrangement for orchestra.
