    Hey, Barry
    Thanks for the kind words. Wish I had more time for additional pinball tutorials. They are fun to make!
    I still have Twilight Zone. It's my fav and will never leave my house. I have room for two pins--for now, it's Popeye and TZ.
    Out of all the pins I've had over the years, I miss Hurricane the most. If I can find a way to squeeze three pins into my game room, Hurricane would be #3.
    Take care and Keep playing pinball!
    -Steve

    *Very informative..Some of my favorite tables are Oursler/Anghelo collabs and I've never really looked into Popeye so I didn't know this was another one by that duo(possibly the last one?)..I saw a vid with Barry in 2014 entertaining the idea of designing another table but he was worried that he's been out of the industry for too long, I wish Stern or JJ would take the chance on him because all of his tables are tried and true classics and I doubt he'd disappoint..thanks for the vid!*

    You can pick up animals a few ways. From the plunge wheel, just hit the "spot animal" skill shot. This option automatically saves an animal.
    The next option is getting the ball up to the mini-play field and exiting through the left animal lane. This option will light the animal, but in order to save that animal, you must shoot the right loop. After successfully hitting the right loop, the animal has been saved and that animal's light is lit in the animal lane and the playfield.
    The real fun is to light the right loop spinach can and save an animal. Since the spinach can doubles each award, you've now saved 2 animals.
    A common strategy of mine is to use the spinach cans strategically, save multiple animals, and light the spinach can on the jackpot Lane. Once all five animals are saved, the jackpot is lit and the jackpot lane spinach can awards double the points--around 90 million.
    Hope this helps.
    Keep Pinballin'!

    Great video thanks, hard to tell but are you using lightning flippers or normal? Cheers

      Good eyes, Joseph! I was using standard white flippers in this video. One of the lightning flippers developed a huge crack so I was waiting on replacements.
      Knowing the lightning flippers (1/8” shorter) were just a way for Williams to speed up games & suck out a few more quarters from players, I’ve never been sold on them.
      Keep pinballin’

      @@steveking9011 haha keen eyes, did you go back to lightening? I'm tempted to put some normal ones in mine just to help with center drains and keep the kids happy but didn't want to make it too easy.

      White lightning flippers with blue rubbers is the best combination I’ve found.
      Red rubbers were way too soft for this pin. I like the dark blue which are harder and give the shots more snap.
      Popeye is great game for the kids. Enjoy!

      Cheers, will keep it in mind, it's got titan reds on it at the moment but still in the process of getting it all up and running 👍

    I watch a lot of these pinball tutorials and this is one of the best and I’m not even very fond of this game.

      Thanks, Stephen!
      I wanted to show the great details of this pin. This game gets bad press, but has a ton of modes, includes an interactive map on the display, and offers 3,4,5,&,6 multi-ball options.
      Hoping folks will give Popeye a deeper look next time they walk by one at a pin show!
      Keep Pinballin!

    Nice Tutorial, but……one question. I saw according to the Pinball Rulesheet, that there’s a Special that can be collected on the outlane, but how do I light it and what’s the Reward for getting the Special?

    • @steveking9011
      @steveking9011  2 роки тому

      Extra ball I believe

    • @addisonfung5009
      @addisonfung5009 2 роки тому

      Ok, I checked the Rulesheet and found out that there’s no Pity Extra Ball/Special available, so the only way to get the Special that can be awarded by shooting the escalator, but is it
      1. If Special is chosen, it automatically awards a Special, or
      2. Like Extra Ball, a certain shot is required to get it?(In the case of getting Special, draining the ball on the right outlane?)

    • @addisonfung5009
      @addisonfung5009 2 роки тому

      I tried playing it on VPX pinball myself. I understand how to get the Extra Balls, and big scorings(of course). But no matter how I tried and tried, that Special just won’t light up!

    Good tutorial! Now the game makes more sense :) one thing i don't really get...is the animal Saving part. Seems like some animals get saved by other things than the actual animal ramp + loop? At first i thought my game was confused...but it seems lika the ramp shoots has something to do with this?

      I know. Pinheads always rip on it, but I don’t think many have spent a lot of time with it.
      I went to several pinball expos a few years back looking for a new pin to purchase. I must have played 150 machines. Once I discovered Popeye, I couldn’t get all the modes and strategies out of my head. The next week I found one in the Midwest and shipped it.

    Thanks for your video, it was very interesting to see a nice tutorial about this very "unique" pinball. I play on a Popeye pinball in a bar from times to times, but it is in very, very bad condition compared to yours (I managed to make 2 billions on it, though!)... Congratulations for having such a fine machine, looks like it's brand new !

    • @steveking9011
      @steveking9011  8 років тому

      Thanks, the playfield is nearly perfect. The box is almost factory.
      There are so many moving parts to this game. I've heard the BUild of Materials on this game was the highest cost in all of Williams' 1994 releases.
      You really need to get some time on a mint Popeye. Folks might rate this pin higher if they got to experience it working 100%.
      Keep Pinballin!

      You're right about its manufacturing cost, I've also heard this machine was more expensive to build than a Twilight Zone... Hard to believe, but true !
      And I hope someday I'll find a nice Popeye to play on: it's definitely an unusual but very interesting game, once you understand how it's meant to be played. Unfortunately good pinballs are becoming quite rare here in France, but there are still some great 90's machines to play on (I'm playing on a fine condition No Fear these days, great fun) !
      Anyway, thanks for your answer, and see you !

      Man, I was playing Popeye the other night. If you apply strategy on the wheel plunge and get spinach cans assigned early on, points rack up pretty quickly. I currently have Twilight Zone and Simpsons PinBall Party & Popeye holds it's own against 'em.
      2 billion is a great score on Popeye. You must be a kick ass player getting that score in a bar on a junky machine.
      Take care, Stan!

    • @Stan-ic5pv
      @Stan-ic5pv 8 років тому +1

      Your strategy is great, but unfortunately, I can't rely on the wheel plunge... Because it doesn't give you the right award (?). I can't use the animal ramp too often either, because when the ball goes down, half the time it drains into the the left outlane (very, very irritating).
      So basically, I try to get as many extras as I can on the upper playfield, play the multiballs, the missions, perform good loop combos, and hope to get to the 6-ball wizard... Very challenging, because of course, the ball save has been disabled, one of the pop bumpers and half of the lightbulbs are dead, and the left flipper is quite wobbly... But despite that, I still enjoy it !
      And again, congratulations for having such a fine collection... I played a few games on the Simpsons (excellent pinball), and I wish someday I'll have the opportunity to play on a fine Twilight Zone: such a fascinating machine !
      Bye !
